Mary was awakened with a sense of dread. She ran to Denise’s room and tried to open the door. When she couldn’t get through, she started to panic.
“MOM! MOM! HELP ME!”
Mary banged on the door and tried to open it with magic. She could feel Denise’s pain, and she dropped to the floor.
“MARY!” Rebecca ran over and grabbed Mary before her head hit the floor.
By this time, Lenora was awake and running down the hall.
“What is happening? Where is Denise?”
Grandmother walked over and tried to open the door with a spell, and it didn’t work either. The front door burst open, and everyone turned to see a frantic faced Logan running up the stairs.
“Logan? What are you…Where is your dad?”
“I don’t know. My heart started racing and I felt Denise call me!”
“That’s impossible,” Mary whispered.
“It’s not. I did feel her call me. Where is she?”
Rebecca pointed to the door, and Logan started ramming it with his shoulder. He sent out a mental message to his father and brother as he kept trying the door. Mary looked as if she was losing color and Rebecca was worried that she would lose her daughter.
“What the fuck is going on, Becca!?” Lenora screamed.
“I told you long ago that we were witches, and you didn’t want to believe. My daughter is tied to yours and she is dying!”
“Tied? Dying? What… I-I don’t understand.”
“I don’t have time to explain it to you right now!” Rebecca screamed.
More footsteps sounded and Marcus and Sabastian came running up the stairs.
“What is going on?” Marcus asked.
Logan had a tear running down his cheek as he looked at his father.
“She is in there and I can’t get to her.”
Realization shown on Marcus’ face and he pulled his son into a hug. He let him go and looked at everyone.
“Okay. We all need to calm down.”
“Calm down? My daughter is in there!” Lenora screamed.
“And mine is dying!” Rebecca cried.
Marcus knelt down and placed a hand on Mary’s head. He smiled and looked at Rebecca.
“She is okay. She too is going through a change. Their souls are tied so she will experience some of what Denise is going through. We cant’s get in because Denise is in there with her father.”
They all sucked in a breath and looked at the closed door. Lenora stepped forward and tilted her head in question.
“Denise doesn’t know her father.”
Marcus barked a laugh.
“She does now. Becca, let me take Mary to her bed. She needs to rest also. There are some things that we need to talk to Lenora about.”
Rebecca had told Lenora when the kids were younger that they were witches and she never believed them. Lenora didn’t want to leave the door but Rebecca pulled her away. There is no more time for coddling feelings.

“Denise, what do you see?” That voice… Denise woke up with a start. Her body was aching, and she felt hot all over. As she tried to process what was happening to her body, she started hearing voices in her head.
“We aren’t going to make it out of this alive.”
“My hip is hurting so badly.”
“Why can’t I just love him?”
“Please help me to help her.”
Denise covered her ears and closed her eyes. Her mutter turned into a full-blown scream.
“Shut up. Shut up. Shut up! SHUT UP!”
The door to the room burst open and Mary came running in. She placed her hands on Denise’s shoulders, and Denise opened her eyes. White light was glowing all around Mary and Denise panicked and backed away with her eyes wide.
“What the hell is happening to me? Why do you have that light surrounding you? These voices in my head won’t stop!”
Mary sat down on the bed and looked at Denise.
“Denise…Look at me. Something’s happened.”
Denise opened her eyes and tried to focus on Mary. Her eyes shifted up, and she screamed. Mary’s head whipped around, and she gasped.
“Assan?”
He smiled and Denise was breathing hard.
“You know him? Who is he?”
Mary smiled and turned around to face Denise.
“You did it!”
“Did what? Who is that!?”
“That’s…”
He stepped forward.
“I am your father.”
Denise sucked in a breath and looked at Mary.
“Dee… Your dad is an angel. You are an angel.”
“I must have hit my head really hard.”
“You haven’t. I wanted to tell you, but I was sworn to secrecy.”
Denise looked at Assan.
“So, you’re a real angel? Like from Heaven?”
“Yes.”
“You’ve seen God? Is God a woman? Is there really gold everywhere? Wait, where are your wings?”
Assan laughed outright.
“I have seen God and God is just that… God. As for my wings, they are only seen in heaven.”
“Wait... How are you here?”
“I am only allowed to come here to procreate and see my seed on their twenty-first birthday.”
“So, this is it? I get to see my father for a day and then you’re gone?”
“God has granted me two days with you.”
“Two? That’s it and I’m never going to see you again?”
Assan walked over and sat down on the other side of Denise.
“You can see me whenever you need me now. I will come to you in dreams and meditation. I cannot physically be with you, but I will always be here.”
Assan’s head tilted as if he was listening, and he stood up. He stood in the middle of the floor looking down at his beautiful daughter. He placed his hands into his pockets and smirked.
“Hello Lenora,” he said while still looking at Denise.
Denise and Mary’s heads snapped over to the door to see a wide-eyed Lenora standing there.
“YOU!” Lenora accused. “What is going on? Why are you here? What have you done to my daughter?”
He smiled over at her.
“I have missed you sweet Lenora. I have come to see about my seed.”
“Your seed? She’s your daughter!”
“I’m sorry. Yes, my daughter.”
“Where have you been?”
“I know that the other humans have told you what I am. There was no way for me to come back here until she turned 21.”
“Your eyes... They look different.”
“Lenora, please. I only have a few hours.”
“What the hell? What sort of shit are you spouting?”
Marcus came into the room and touched Lenora’s shoulder.
“Lenora. Please, for your daughter’s sake... Listen.”
“Who is that?” Denise asks apprehensively.
Mary shrugs her shoulders, and Marcus turns around to see who they are looking at and turns back confused. There was no one there.
“It is I, Marcus,” Marcus answers.
Denise shakes her head.
“No not you. Behind you.”
He and Lenora turn around and look at each other confused.
Assan chuckles. “That is Brahm. He is a Guardian.”
Marcus looks at Mary.
“You can see it too?” Mary nods.
The angel standing behind Marcus nods his head in greeting.
“It seems as though God has sent Guardians to protect your guardians. Special indeed.”
Rebecca came around the corner and gasped.
“Hello Rebecca. It is great to meet you. Thank you for your protection of my seed.”
“It’s an honor,” she answers with her eyes lowered. She looks over at her daughter. “Mary? Are you okay?”
Mary stands and walks over to her mom. She hugs her around the waist and whispers in her ear
.
“Mom…I can see angels.”
“I can see him too, Mary.”
“No. There is a Guardian behind Marcus.”
Rebecca’s eyes snapped to Marcus who shrugged.
“They are here now?” She whispered.
“Yes. Right there.”
Mary waves at Brahm who smirks.
“How?” She glances toward Assan.
Assan shrugs and walks back to Denise.
“It’s been known that witches who have souls take on some of the abilities of those that they share a soul with. This is no different. Your Mary has the sight as well.”
“Well, I’ll be,” Rebecca muttered.

ANALISE
Analise woke up gasping for air. Something has shifted, and she felt overwhelmed with emotion. She looked around the room and Z was still asleep. What in the hell was that? She looked at the clock and cursed. It was Denise’s birthday. That could only mean one thing… she’s come into her powers. Analise closes her eyes and tries to gain access to Mary’s coven. She’s pushed back with so much force that her eyes begin to burn. She screams out and Z wakes up.
“Analise? Are you okay? What happened?”
She rubbed her eyes and blinked them open slowly.
“I tried to get into the coven, but I was forced out. This magic is stronger than any that I’ve ever encountered.”
“Show me.”
He took her hands and she focused on the house. He felt around and his hands tightened on hers.
“Ow. You’re hurting my hands.”
Z paused and looked around.
“Look. Do you see that glow? Angels.”
“Here? On earth?”
“Yes. Look.”
They saw a glittery glow around the house that would be invisible to an inexperienced witch or warlock.
“That is the residue of a Guardian. We are going to need help.”
“Who can help us? We can’t defeat an angel.”
“Let’s get out of here before they sense us. I’ll make some calls.”
20
It was now four in the morning and the whole house was awake. Grandmother was in the kitchen making some coffee, and Denise was sitting at the table with her dad. Rebecca, Mary, Marcus and his sons were all standing in the doorway just watching. Grandmother put two mugs on the table in front of Denise and Assan and walked to where the others stood.
“I’m in total shock. What does this mean for me?” Denise asked.
Assan pushed his coffee away and took his daughter’s hand. Her eyes closed and her breathing increased. One minute she was in the kitchen and the next she was walking down a beautiful white gravel path. The path led to a stream that looked as if it was flowing backwards.
“Where are we?”
“Heaven.”
Denise’s head whipped over to stare at her father.
“What? How?”
He smiled and looked down at the river.
“This is my favorite place to be. When I think of you, which is often, I come here to see you. Look.”
Denise looked down and she saw Mary’s house and everyone in the kitchen. She gasped.
“How are we in both places at once?”
“We are not. You are here in meditation. This is how you will see me.”
“This is so cool.” Denise looked around. “Why are we alone? Where are all of the other angels?”
“They are around. This is our moment and I want you to myself.”
As quickly as they were at the river, they were back in the kitchen. Denise opened her eyes and looked around. When her eyes landed on Mary, she smiled.
“Mary. That was amazing.”
Mary smiled at her and she could feel the love coming through their bond. Assan sat up and took Denise’s hand again.
“Daughter. You must take heed. There are those who would want your ability to heal, kill, and see. You must protect your secret at all costs.”
“But I don’t even know what I’m looking for. When I woke up, I could hear voices and it was so overwhelming.”
“You will be able to hear others pain. It will be hard to focus which is why you are blessed to have such wonderful people around you. Grandmother would be the proper teacher to help you block the voices. She is the reason why this family was chosen.”
“Wait. I’m tied to Mary.”
“Yes, but you were fated to be in this family with a powerful person of magic. Just as you were fated to marry.”
“Marry? I’m not dating anyone.”
Assan smiled and looked over at Marcus.
“You are not, but your story merges with theirs.”
Denise looked confusingly at Marcus who just shrugged.
“Your soul is not just tied with Mary’s; it is also tied to Logan.”
“What? That makes no sense. I just met him.”
Logan was now standing rigid in the corner. His only thought was how worried he was when Denise called out to him when she was changing. He could literally feel her pull. It made so much sense now.
“I don’t get it. You’re telling me that my whole life has been mapped out in some kind of blueprint and I have nothing to say about it?”
“Of course, you have a say in this. You can choose the course fated to you or not. If you choose not to, your life will just be a little harder. It is foretold that the person that you give yourself to, will be bonded by your souls. Your angel and their magic will merge. If you choose a person with no magic, you will continue to be who you are, but you watch them die. You are an angel now which means you live forever.”
Denise stood up and the chair screeched backwards.
“So, follow the plan or get fucked? Nice!”
“Denise!” Lenora scolded.
She stormed from the room and pushed through the crowd that was gathered in the doorway.
“Well, that went well.” Assan chuckled.
Lenora shook her head and walked forward.
“You do have a way with words. You could have gone a little easier on her.”
“Why should I? She has a purpose and I told her. There is no need to prolong words. We have no time for that.”
“Yeah, but she just found out that she is an angel, and you threw marriage at her in one swoop.”
“We are not known for coddling humans. Your emotions are weak, and she is my seed. She needs to be strong. For her sake.”
Lenora took the mug of coffee from in front of Assan and smiled sadly.
“Well, she was only human until this morning.”
Assan looked at her face and saw a sadness.
“You are sad for her? Why? She is an angel and she is indestructible.”
“Yeah, but she is also a daughter who just met her father. It’s too much to handle, even for an angel.”
She shrugged her shoulder and went in search of Denise.
21
Mary walked into her room and saw Denise laying across her bed. She had passed Lenora in the hallway on her way out.
“Hey Dee. I brought your coffee. Denise sat up and smiled. “You okay?”
“Not really. I just don’t know how to take any of this. I didn’t ask for any of it.”
“I know. Hey, but at least Logan is cute!”
“Not funny. It’s so messed up. Like, he’s cute and all but damn. I can’t find my own partner? I don’t like this at all.”
“I’m sorry Dee, you don’t have to pick him. Go your own way and if things end up working later... fine.”
“That’s just it. If it works out? That’s a lot of ifs. I don’t want this.”
“Unfortunately, we are who we are. Let’s just visit with your dad. He won’t be here long, and you know that you’ll regret it if you didn’t ask and do everything that you wanted.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” Denise looked down at her lap. “Thanks for bringing my coffee.” She looked up at Mary with a furrowed brow. “Need to sit down with my mom.”
“Yeah.
Mom had to give her some of her special tea after we talked to her last night. She was not handling this very well. She does look better today though.”
“God. This isn’t fair to her either. This has to be so confusing for her. She has been looking for him for years. I feel so bad for her.”
Mary rubbed Denise’s back. “She’ll be okay. We all will.”
“I hope so.”
Lenora sat on the side of the bed and listened for any sounds. The house seemed quiet, so she stood up and walked to the door. She quietly opened the room and listened again. As much as she wanted to talk to Assan, she was still nervous. It’s been years.
“Mom? What are you doing?”
She jumped and placed a hand on her heart.
“Geeze Dee! You scared the mess out of me!”
Denise laughed and shook her head.
“You okay?”
“I should be asking you that. I will not pretend that I know what is happening. I just know that I need you to be okay.”
“She will be fine,” Assan said as he came up the stairs.
Lenora stood erect and stared at him as he walked toward her.
“Lenora. Can we please take a walk?”
Lenora looked at Denise who smiled her assurance and mouthed ‘go’.
“Okay. Let me grab my shoes.”
The grass outside was damp and there were small puddles on the sidewalk. The air was a little cold and Lenora mentally kicked herself for not bringing a sweater. Assan escorted Lenora down the path towards the trees that lined the field in the back of the house. They walked quietly until Lenora couldn’t take it anymore.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you just leave?”
“Would you have believed me if I did?”
She smiled. “I guess not. This is all so crazy. I thought that you just got what you wanted and left.”
“In some ways, I did.” She gave him a dirty look. “I mean, I saw you and knew that you were what I had come for. When we made love, I felt that you would be perfect to leave a part of myself with. Unlike humans, we aren’t good at emotion.”
