  “Now what?” Tony asked, looking at the lake. Partway down, he could see the peninsula where his tent stood. “It’s getting late, he noted.”

  “There’s a dead bear close to the tent,” Connie noted.

  “We’d have to paddle the south channel in the dark.”

  “There’s no tent or sleeping bag for Phil.”

  Tony sighed. “Let’s get as far as we can while it’s light.” He leaned a little harder on the paddle.
