Raise the Dead Page 33

by Briana Michaels

If this thing they were on the hunt for turned out to be Michael, Lucifer would capture him and find a way to be rid of him for good. The VIP section of Hell was a risk he was willing to take to see that motherfucker contained, since he couldn’t be killed.

Lucifer refused to believe Michael was the special chosen one who could never truly die.

  Death kissed everyone eventually.

He wanted to be there when Michael was forced to pucker up.

“No endings,” Lucifer mumbled as they made their way down a busy street in the human world. “Con left even the Book of Angels at the stopping point of Eve’s death and everything going to…”

  “Hell?” Gabriel grinned. “Yeah.”

“Lazarus tell him do to that, or was that his own clever trick?”

“I never asked.” Gabriel’s wings were invisible with a Divine and incredibly convenient magic. Where Lucifer made space for others, Gabriel just plowed through and made the humans move out of his way.

Eve remained by Lucifer’s side. “Laz warned him about endings, he said that once to me.”

“Hmmph,” More like gave Con a fucking complex about endings, Lucifer thought. The Angel never wrote one. In every book, every tale, every scroll throughout time, Constantine always left the end incomplete. It used to drive them all crazy. One massive fucking cliffhanger, that’s all Constantine delivered.

“Writing the Book of Angels wasn’t just for me,” Lucifer confessed to Eve. “He didn’t want to run the risk of Michael ever finding out about you surviving after the Battle of the Brotherhood.”

“Well, he’s going to find out now,” Eve’s grin was wickedly delightful.

Lucifer stepped onto the street because the sidewalks were getting too crowded. Seriously, where the fuck were all these people going? The lights and billboards lit the street up. He couldn’t see a single star in the city sky.

“It won’t matter if he finds out about her now anyways,” Gabriel’s shoulder knocked someone else’s. “We’re bonded. We’ll protect her.”

“Stop talking about me like I’m not here. And I can protect myself, Gabbie.”

  Gabriel growled, playfully.

“You know, I had a dog named Gabbie once,” Eve teased. “Whiny little thing.”

Gabe cracked a laugh Lucifer hadn’t expected. “Whiny huh?” he snagged her arm and tucked her into a quick embrace. “A sassy mouth like yours deserves to pay a penance,” Gabriel kissed her.

“Mmm, remind me to sin more often.”

Lucifer ignored the rest of their conversation because something interesting caught his attention. What the hell was that?

A shadow crossed the street. The thing was fucking huge. A car horn honked and skirted around a bus. Another car headed straight towards Lucifer and the only thing between them?

  That. Shadow.

It took off. Lucifer’s heart galloped in a panic and he chased after it. No… not chased. Tugged. Somehow, something was reeling him in like a fish on a line.

Time slowed down. His heart battered against his chest. Thump, thump. Thump…. Thump…

His boots gripped the asphalt, his muscular legs tensed as they slam, slam, slammed on the street. Lights flickered. The darkness encroached. Lucifer’s vision tunneled, red bleeding out and filling his eyes. Black flames dripped from Lucifer’s limbs and puddled like oil onto the alley he just turned into.

Thump… thump……. Thump. His heart couldn’t keep a steady pace. The world spun too fast. Lucifer buckled down and gripped his fraying control and demanded his mind made sense of this.

  No.

  He couldn’t look away.

  No.

Bats swarmed, causing a funnel that separated Lucifer not only from Gabriel and Eve, but from the rest of the world too…

  “NO!”

The Dark Angel slammed a lightning bolt of energy into Lucifer’s chest that had him screaming until his lungs shredded to ribbons. His head snapped back, mouth gaped open, fingers spread, arms out wide. Electricity jolted through Lucifer’s body and he rose from the ground.

  The earth quaked.

  The alleyway split and cracked.

Lucifer had no room for thought or fear in his mind. He barely had enough clarity to open a fucking Hell hole. Channeling all the power he had left - his will, his light, his dark, his fucked and his faith, Lucifer had one chance to capture this motherfucker – even if it took Lucy’s last breath to do it.

Without having touched him at all, this monster tore the Devil down to bare Divinity. Lucifer’s eyes blew wide as another wave of agony squeezed the air from his lungs.

This wasn’t possible. What was happening… what he was seeing… this wasn’t fucking possible!

The Dark Angel charged forward, busting the ground as if his legs had anvils strapped to the bottoms of his feet. Then the Angel’s mouth opened wide and a swarm of insects flew out of his mouth and straight at Lucifer.

The Devil faced the nightmare, head on, and focused his final efforts on the only thing he could do to protect everyone around him. It might very well be his last act of kindness on this earth.

FUCK! Bugs and buzzing wings beat in his face. Energy pricked and bit his skin. With a roar, Lucifer managed to open a Hell hole. He pushed past the winds that Dark Angel summoned and trudged through the swarm of ancient insects flying out of that motherfucker’s mouth and grabbed him by his neck with white-knuckle-fever.

Then the Devil fell into Hell….

And took Raphael down with him.
