‘So,’ he began, ‘You really are Mrs. Vivian Boreman?’
‘Yes,’ I said, for what could I lose? I thought he might help me to get custody and adopt Angel's child but no, he had come to read me the contents of John Boreman's will.
How do you make that out? I thought John had left everything to Angel, or rather Janice White, as I later found out her real name. And I was ready and prepared to adopt Angel's child. He too had inherited a fortune that would go into a fund for his future.
My plans were to work from home. I thought about becoming a freelance journalist, it was something I was good at and I figured as long as the people did not see my face, I was employable from a distance. It helped to be a realist sometimes.
But John had left everything to me, a shock which didn't make sense. Before Jeffrey Stanton left me, now a wealthy woman, he passed over a hand-written letter in John's script.
In it, he said he had always loved me, the fool, and even now when I reread it, I always weep. He told me not to grieve for him but if I was reading this letter now, then she had killed him. She, the woman he was involved with, this Angel, Janice White had killed him. But I was not to go to the police with this piece of information, not unless I wanted to lose everything, and by that, I think John meant the money.
And John had a story to tell.
'Remember,' he wrote, 'How I used to like playing games?'
‘Oh yes, John,’ nodding and agreeing with tears streaming down my face. ‘I remember you playing your games, hours upon hours of playing with figures on boards, rattling the dice of luck. You were devoted to winning the game.’
'And do you remember that now and again, when you were away, I would go for a gaming weekend?'
‘Well you didn't expect me to go with you, did you? You knew what a time waster I thought these games were?’
‘That's where I met Angel at one of these weekends. She had an idea about creating the perfect board game, she wanted to make money, she said. And together, we would be able to make a great deal of money. Well, you can Vivian, look at Monopoly, it's played worldwide. And yes, Vivian, I wanted to make money, I wanted it for you.’
When I re-read the letter I always weep at this part.
'The board game we were going to make was to create the perfect robbery and get away with it. I found it absolutely fascinating because just when I thought I had resolved it; she came up with another problem. This time on how the money could not be traced back to at this stage, to us. I thought it was hypothetical. She named the banks she wanted to rob, and she provided the plans. Angel said she drew them; she had been a draughtsman at one point in her life. She even gave names to the robbers, Andrew Nelson, Larry Dicks, Art Rogers, Robert Bee, and Jacob Barba. I can just see your face now if you are reading this. Yes, wasn't I an idiot? It never was a game for her; it was for real. When I read their names in the newspapers, I knew it was too late to do anything about it. And how did she manage not to be found out since these men were friends of hers? My guess is she did a little work of her own and burnt her bridges with these men and disappeared. She used me to launder the money and suddenly, I became a rich businessman, a game maker. I have a couple of factories and the games I created in my own spare time when I was with you proved to be very popular. I was still with you at the time and I am sorry Vivian, but I did have an affair with her. She is someone you cannot deny. She wanted to marry and be my wife. So, when you asked for a divorce, I thought it was best to let you go because I knew something was wrong. She wanted me to make a will out, telling me I had to leave everything to her. And if you are reading this, then I guessed right.’
At this point I’m in pieces for I knew he really loved me.
'Please enjoy what I have left you sweetheart and get on with your life, with all my love John.'
