After their statements were done Connor promised to buy Lilly lunch. They had both called into work and said they wouldn’t be in today. Under the circumstances, they had a pretty good excuse.
“But I still have to go back tomorrow,” Connor complained on the way out of the station. They had their car back, at least, so they wouldn’t have to call for a taxi. Since George was under arrest and the garage was closed down, there was no reason they couldn’t take their fully repaired car now. They might not even have to pay the rest of the repair bill. Funny how this had all worked out.
“You know,” Lilly told him, “if you don’t want to go back to your job, I think I have an idea of what you can do instead.”
“Really? What?”
She rolled her eyes at him. “Seriously? Connor, look at what you did here. You took the barest bit of information and turned it into a mystery, then solved the whole thing. There were all these crimes going on right in front of the whole town and no one saw it but you.”
He shrugged. “You and me. Both of us.”
“Mostly you. This was incredible. You’re incredible. You need to consider doing this full time. It’s obvious that even here in Milestone, the mysterious is all around us. You could make a decent amount of money doing this, and you’d be happy for a change.”
He stared at her blankly. “By doing what?”
She reached out and stroked his cheek. “Oh, lover. For someone who’s so smart, you sure can be slow sometimes. As a private investigator. Connor, you’re really good at solving mysteries. You should go for it.”
The idea slowly took hold in his brain. She was right. This had been more fun than he’d had in a very long time. He felt like he’d accomplished something. Actually done something worthwhile. Could he do this for a living?
Well. Maybe it was worth thinking about.
“Tell you what,” he said to her, taking her hand in his. “I’ll consider doing what I love, if you consider coloring your hair again. You used to love that. I want you to start doing it again. Be yourself.”
“A girl does love to express herself.” She pushed her free hand through her hair. “You’re right. I’ve forgotten a lot of who I used to be. I think we both have, really. We need to find that again. Thanks, Connor.”
“For what?”
“Just for being you. I love that I’m with someone I can share everything with. My dreams, and my thoughts and just… everything.”
“Hey, speaking of which. When you came home yesterday you said you had some news. We’ve been running around so much that we haven’t had time to talk. What was it you wanted to tell me?”
Now that she had the time to tell him, Lilly found that she was at a loss for words. Instead, she pulled his hand closer, and pressed it tight against her belly. “Guess, Connor Gless.”
His eyes went wide. He looked down at where their hands were clasped and touching her body, and then back up into her face. He could hear his heart in his ears. He could see the answer in her eyes and he knew it was true immediately.
It was like he could feel the new life growing inside of her.
Wrapping his arms around her tight he picked her up off her feet and spun her around, and around.
“We’re going to have a baby!” he called out, for the whole town to hear. “You and I are going to be parents!”
The greatest mystery of all, Connor thought to himself. Love. Family. Children and life and…
Everything.
