“What are you doing here, Maya?”
It was Gage’s voice. I recognized it immediately, but instead of the annoyance and irritation it used to provoke inside me, I felt…anxious and apprehensive, completely entranced by the deep and dark tone.
“I’m here with Kyle. I had no idea you ran this type of club.”
My words were intended to be cutting, but they lacked the strength I’d hoped they would have. I hadn’t turned to look at him, but I could feel the warmth of his body behind me, the heat of his hands as he held them on my shoulders, holding me in place.
His lips brushed against my ear when he bent down to say, “You shouldn’t be here.”
I turned my head slightly, his lips now brushing my cheek because he hadn’t pulled away. “What is this place?”
He was silent for a beat, the tension between us pulling stronger as he seduced me with nothing more than silence. Finally breathing out, he squeezed my shoulders. “Would you like to see?”
“Yes,” I answered, the one word coming out on a shallow breath.
“Then I’ll show you, but it will be done on my terms. Understand?”
“Yes.”
I couldn’t believe I was so easily going along with his demands, but it seemed almost natural to submit to him in this environment. It could have been the alcohol – it could have been a deep-seated habit to follow the instructions given to me by a man who at one time had helped raised me. I didn’t know – but more importantly, at that moment, I didn’t care. I was too curious for my own good.
I felt soft cloth brush against my cheek just before it was tied around my eyes, blocking my sight and casting me into a darkness that I trusted Gage to lead me through. Once the cloth was tied in place, I felt him grab my hand and lead me through the room, down a long corridor until the sounds of the club faded into the distance.
He held me in place, standing me where he wanted me – and then a door closed.
“Turn around, Maya.”
I did as I was told, reaching up to remove the blindfold, but my hands were caught in his before I could pull the cloth from my face.
“No, beautiful girl. I said this would be on my terms.”
I stilled, standing in a place where I didn’t know if we were alone or not. There was no noise besides the sound of his feet pacing in front of me. The silence felt like it would go on forever, but was finally broken when he said, “Maya, are you sure you want to know what this is all about? If I start, I won’t stop.”
“But I’m your sister,” I answered.
“Not by blood you’re not. When we were younger, all I wanted was to look out for you – to help take care of you. But seeing you this week – seeing you now in this environment, looking as beautiful as you do…” He breathed out before finishing his thought. “…I look at you as so much more now.”
“What are you saying, Gage?” I didn’t understand – or at least, my mind didn’t understand. My body on the other hand, knew exactly what he meant, because my body felt it too. With my heart hammering in my chest and my breath moving quickly through my lungs, I waited to hear what he would say next.
His words never came, but instead, his lips brushed over mine. It was like a tidal wave had crashed through me – like I’d taken a step off a cliff and now understood that there was nothing that could – or would – break my fall.
Did I want this? And if so, could I handle what it had the possibility to become?
I felt confused and disoriented, excited and anxious to know where he could lead me with nothing more than his voice and his touch.
I wanted to be that woman on the stage, regardless of who the person was that was making me feel so utterly beautiful and free.
The heat of his palms wrapped over my cheeks, the strength of his arms holding me in place as his lips took possession of mine – as his tongue demanded entrance into my mouth. This wasn’t just my stepbrother – this wasn’t just a man who was slowly driving me into a passionate frenzy of need.
This was a man who, at that exact moment, was claiming me.
I realized stepping into this now would cast me into the unknown.
That I would fall helplessly into his arms as I melted into the kiss.
My last thought as he pulled me towards him and I felt his strong body against mine was:
