Chapter1
Aniya took a deep breath, bracing herself for the best, or more likely, the worst. God, please no. Not now, she thought. Her hands were shaking as she lifted the little plastic thing higher, just enough to get some good light on it. Her heart sank, and she knew blood rushed away from her face -- into god knows where.
No, no, no, she moaned inaudibly. Right before her eyes, she saw two thin pink lines appear on the space intended. She must have done something wrong, right? She didn’t use her first pee. She had forgotten she should have done so, first thing in the morning. It was past lunch time, nearly one, and she was alone, glad she was alone in her apartment. She’d said she wasn’t feeling well, and took the rest of the day off, just for this exam. Negative in everything, but positive in this, she thought wryly.
She was going to take another in a few minutes’ time, no, maybe an hour, just to be sure. She would drink tons of water, and pee all the bad news out. This was bad news, right? She was too young for this, and her job had been one borne out of luck. She hadn’t expected to live in Madrid, hadn’t expected she’d find love, or maybe something close to it.
It was too light in color, she thought. Maybe this was a false positive. She had read that somewhere. It happened. Maybe the kit was expired, or defective. She didn’t follow instructions at some point. There were more than ten reasons going on in her head, all in that sad effort to make the test void.
Were these things really a hundred percent accurate? Ninety-nine percent accurate in the least. She was going to take another one, she told herself, and she was going to take another and wait it out, wait until no lines appeared for an hour. Jesus, am I really pregnant? Her periods were always irregular, and she had been too lax about monitoring it. What was there to monitor if she barely had any? It skipped for months on end…
She was like a kid herself. She couldn’t be pregnant, she couldn’t! Aniya took a deep breath, shuddering as she let go of the pregnancy kit in her hand. It suddenly burned her fingers. She stared at it on the floor. What were they going to say? Her aunt and uncle. Oh god, she was going to disappoint them for sure. She was going to hurt them. They had considered her as their own child. And here she was, about to have a child of her own?
I’m twenty-two years old, she told herself. I can do anything, well- we can do anything together. If he’d have the kid… she shook her head. She was already accepting the fact that she was pregnant? And they’d only been out on a few dates. What were the odds? He was a busy guy, he could only meet up with her during night time. How was she going to break this to him?
She looked at the kit on the floor once more, her breathing growing deep. Fear began to course through her. Fear for the unknown. How was she even going to survive? She had only begun working for Thysenn-del Prado Ltd., lucky to have even landed a job there. As secretary to the general manager, work was stressful, and she had thought it was just plain art- until the first week proved her wrong. This brand moved at a hectic pace, and they were passionate about fine and contemporary art, and some pieces cost way more than her assumed salary for the entire year. Moving to Spain last year had been an adventure, and the adventure hadn’t officially started until today, she realized.
How was she going to afford this? She had insurance, but she wasn’t even sure if insurance was going to be enough to survive with a kid in tow. She was thinking too much, wasn’t she? She hadn’t even heard his side yet. How was he going to react? He had been undeniably sweet and attentive the last few weeks that they had dated. Surely, he was going to hear her out, whatever the options were. She didn’t care if he didn’t marry her, as long as he’d support her and the kid.
The kid. It sent terror down her spine. She lifted her shirt and looked sideways at the mirror slanted against the wall. The bathroom light was warm, and she saw the shadows play against her stomach. She breathed out and held it there, wondering how weird it was to have a bump on her belly.
Damn, that looked weird, she thought, her eyes brows furrowing. What did she know about pregnancy? Or babies? She took up Marketing Communications in college, only to stop for financial reasons. How was she going to tell her aunt and uncle? That dilemma again. That dilemma was going to haunt her for days on end. She had to make sure she was pregnant. She looked at the other pregnancy kit, still in the box; and she took a deep breath and prayed, and she prayed like she had never prayed before.
***
Yesterday had been a nightmare. A complete, huge, nightmare. The four other tests turned up with darker, more visible pink lines. Double lines. She was pregnant. She was fricking pregnant. She thought she had accepted it already, she thought she was ready for the results. Five tests, and she knew she wasn’t ready. She needed to talk to someone, she needed to see someone. She knew she needed to see him. It was her only option. Support was important, she had read somewhere, stupidly googling about single moms and pregnancy.
She worked haphazardly, knowing she couldn’t excuse herself for a sick leave. Four or five month
s at work, four or five months receiving minimum pay. A few hours after she knew she had to accept the inevitable, she began researching on Spanish healthcare, and she began researching on adoption, and she began texting him, and she normally never texted until it was Friday or Saturday.
Like a damned booty call, huh, she thought, knowing this was going to be weird for him, as it already was for her. He replied mere moments later, in fact, he called her.
“Qué hay?” he asked her in Spanish.
“I- just wanted to meet up,” she said, trying to find the right words to say. She couldn’t tell him this over the phone.
“For drinks?”
“Something like that,” she replied. Of course, she didn’t dare drink. The thought of it made her feel queasy already.
“Alright, I’ll see you at Humberto’s?” he asked.
Humberto’s was where they had their first date, and in the course of time, things had developed from table to bedroom quite drastically. Why were they meeting there? It had to be something special. Her hopes lit up considerably this time. There was hope in this, he could be more than infatuated with her, right? As she was with him. She didn’t even know if he was father material, let alone husband material.
First things first, he had to know. She had to act calm, but as the moment neared, the moment for dinner calm, her nerves broke apart, and she was crying mere minutes before she had to leave. She had to reapply makeup once more, determined to look as normal as possible, like nothing was ever wrong.
What could be wrong? Apart from the fact that she was carrying his child? What could go wrong? Nothing could go more wrong than this, right? She was pregnant, and she had just landed her first real job, and she was alone in Madrid, all alone, except for this guy who had asked her out three months ago. Aniya got to the restaurant ahead of him, and she was glad, knowing she had time to compose herself.
She chose a table by the corner, folding her table napkin numerous ways, in an effort to stop her hands from shaking. How was she going to do this? She should have thought about it more thoroughly, if she hadn’t broken down a couple of times while as she dressed. She stood up to smoothen the creases on her dress -- a failed effort, really.
“Look at you,” a man’s voice interrupted her.
“How are you?” she asked him. She forced a smile at him. She hadn’t seen him in over a week. She spoke fluent Spanish, thanks to her mother, who had grown up in Spain, only to relocate to the U.S after she had gotten married to Aniya’s father.
“Great, great,” he breathed out. “You really do look great in that orange dress. Hugs you in all the right places.”
She wanted to smile, wanted to giggle, but she found that she couldn’t. There were more pressing matters at hand, one that included a baby on the way. He approached her and stiffly kissed her on the cheek. Jose Aguirre wasn’t showy in public, but he made up for it in the bedroom- this she found out the first night they slept together, and the next, and then the next.
She didn’t want to sleep with him tonight, even though she could smell that animal lust off him. They both sat down. “How was your day?” she asked him.
“Oh,” his brow cocked up. “Have we reached that point where we ask about each other?”
“What do you mean?” she suppressed a frown, not liking what he had said one bit.
“I thought we were way, way, way from that,” he gave a short laugh. He called for a waiter. “I’ll have a scotch, neat. You’re having a gin and tonic, right?”
“I’m not drinking tonight,” she said, biting her lower lip.
He shrugged. “What’s gotten into you? Yeah, just drinks first. Some sparkling water for the lady.”
The waiter nodded and excused himself.
“I just don’t feel like drinking at the moment,” she told him.
“Well, now would be a good time to drink. I just got a hold of some really good property by Alcalá Street.”
“Congratulations,” she told him. “I have something to say-“
“I have something to tell you first,” he interrupted her, waving a dismissive hand in the air. “I know we’ve been enjoying the last few months and all, I mean I’ve had fun, you’ve had fun, so it’s kind of fair. But what wouldn’t be fair would be you just going all clingy-“
“Clingy?” she repeated. “What?”
“That text earlier. You clearly wanted to see me, and frankly, I don’t work that way, at least not in relationships. I mean, we’re just casually dating, you remember that, right?”
“You’ve been seeing other people while you’re seeing me now?”
He closed his eyes and took a breath. “I wasn’t seeing them per se-”
“Them. Not just one person. Them,” she said blankly.
“I already told you,” he sighed, “you knew for a fact that I wasn’t serious with this whole dating thing. Come on, Aniya, we’re both young-”
“You told me, but you didn’t tell me you’d just go sleeping around,” her tone rose a bit higher, but she quickly remembered they were in a restaurant. Thank goodness it was just them for now, or she would have-
“Is this what you were supposed to say to me?” he asked her, studying her.
“No,” she said, feeling bile rise up her throat. She wanted to throw up. He was, in effect, ready to call it quits. They were just dates, but she was pregnant, with his child, for cryin’ out loud! “What in the hell is going on?”
He cleared his throat, and he took a good sip from his glass of scotch. “I told you it would have been a good time to drink. I don’t think we’re working out together, you know.”
“Because you’re seeing someone else.” It was no longer a question for her. Reality sunk in further and further, and she suddenly wanted to scream at him, she wanted to throw things at him, for making her feel like crap, when she was already feeling like crap. He wasn’t a prince charming, she had known this from the start, but she did not expect him to sink that low. The two-timing son-of-a---
“I like you, I really do,” he continued. “We’d make great friends, if you’d still let that happen.”
Let it happen? Was he for real? Was he hearing himself? The asshole was delusional! She felt that ugly feeling growing in the pit of her stomach, and for a moment, she wanted to violently puke, on him, all over him, just to get back at him, no matter how petty it seemed.
“Let what happen? Being friends? Being friends when you’ve already slept with me?”
“Hey,” he shrugged, “it’s a two-way thing. I’d have never have slept with you without your consent.”
Aniya closed her eyes. Unbelievable! She felt her palm curl up into a fist, and she gripped on it hard. “I don’t think that’s possible.” Not when I’m pregnant with your child, you asshole.
He shrugged again, nonchalant about everything. “I met someone two weeks ago, she’s fun, you’d have wanted to meet her-”
“I don’t think I would have,” she told him through gritted teeth. She wanted to get out of the restaurant, she wanted to go home… go home and do what? Cry? Rage over him? He was an asshole- that much she knew, but this was way, way below what she had even assumed.
He was the lowest of the low, one of the worst people she had ever met in her life. It was too late to turn back. This baby was going to be her child’s father, this twat was her sperm donor. Oh god! Oh god! She felt this lump in her throat, and she found that she couldn’t breathe normally at all.
“Look, Aniya, I didn’t want it to end like this. We could have gone out with a bang, but you texted me first today, and you know, it sent warning signals-”
“Because I was supposed to wait for you? Like I worked for you?” she scoffed at him. ”I work, too, you know.”
“It’s also why we can’t work out. You work a nine to six- seven, was it seven? You work long hours a day as a white collar, office worker--”
“What’s wrong with working? At least I’m not stealing anything from anyone. It’s an honest job,” she
said. It dawned on her that he thought she was below his average income dating bracket or something else that was sad, something else that was superficial. Was the guy even that rich? Or were there more things she didn’t know about him? She was only taken in by his smile- that damned charming smile, those buttery words. And she hadn’t dated in so long, not since she had started her first year of university….
“I didn’t say it was wrong. We just won’t meet eye to eye.”
“Oh, what?” her eyes narrowed. “I’m too poor for you or something? I don’t pronounce my Spanish correctly? Or you have terrible English? Is that it?”
He frowned. “I spent a gap year in England.”
“You should have spent another year there,” she said. “Feels like you need it still.”
“Aniya, let’s part as friends.”
We can’t part as friends. I’m pregnant with your child. We can’t be friends at all. I had even thought we were going to co-parent at least, the crappiest thing I could even think of. What was I even thinking? What was I even assuming? “I’m leaving,” she mustered herself to say. “I’m leaving for good.”
“Alright. Can we see each other next week? You know, as friends?”
She stopped and stared at him, knowing she didn’t want to see him next week, in fact, she would never want to see him again, ever. She breathed in deeply, and she stood up, not saying another word. She walked out of the restaurant, walked out into the cold air, and she had never felt more alone in her life.
***
First things first, she told herself as she lay in bed that morning, not wanting to get up for work, what am I going to do with my life now? She couldn’t go back to California. Sure, she had her aunt and uncle there, her cousins… but this was different. She came to Spain to reconnect with her culture, and it took a while. Her parents had died here. She was in school when that happened, some international school her parents paid a pretty penny for. All for the sake of a good education. She found out two hours later when she got called to the principal’s office.
