“Yes, you do.” Noah held me tighter, like he was afraid of ever letting go.
Then someone else cut in, reminding me we weren’t actually the only two people in this room.
“I’m glad you’re enjoying your reunion,” a woman said. “But before you get too comfortable, we’ve got a problem to handle here first.”
I turned to see who had spoken. It was the woman in the stiletto boots.
She’d pushed Dr. Foster down to his knees and was holding a sword up to his throat.
Bella
With Raven and Noah involved in their reunion and Thomas grieving over Cassandra’s bloodied body, it was up to me to apprehend the elephant in the room—the witch who was trying to blend in with the humans.
He didn’t really think that was going to work, did he? Sure, he was older and balding, and male witches never had even half the amount of power as female witches.
But he wasn’t walking out of here with a get out of jail free card.
Which was why I’d knocked him down to his knees and held my sword up to his throat.
“Oh, right.” Noah looked at him, still holding tightly onto Raven. “The witch.”
“We need to figure out what he’s doing here and what to do with him,” I said.
“That’s Dr. Foster,” Raven chimed in. “He’s the doctor at the bunker. I think the demons are holding something over him, because they’ve been forcing him to—“
“Foster?” I smirked, cutting her off before she could continue. This was too good to be true. “Of course. I heard the Fosters encouraged their males to go into medicine. It was the only way they considered them useful for anything besides reproduction. The entire Foster circle is working with the demons, aren’t they?”
“I’m just a doctor,” the old man sputtered. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t even think about lying.” I lowered my voice and leaned in closer to his ear. “We know about the blood binding spell. We’ve seen the shifters affected by it. That spell has powerful Foster magic written all over it.”
“The Foster circle has been dead for centuries.” He sounded small and afraid. “Maybe they used to be powerful, but not anymore. I’m all that’s left. I was kidnapped with the rest of the humans. I don’t know anything more about what’s going on here. I swear it.”
“Are you willing to make a blood oath on that?” I asked.
“Just let me go. Please,” he begged. “I won’t tell anyone what happened today. I’ll make a blood oath promising I won’t tell anyone.”
“So you’re willing to make a blood oath promising not to tell anyone what happened, but not that you don’t know anything about it.”
A few seconds passed by in silence. The humans just clung to each other, looking both stunned and terrified.
“I was blackmailed,” he finally said. “I didn’t get to choose what family I was born into. None of us do. I didn’t want anything to do with this. I just wanted a normal life. You have to believe me.”
I didn’t.
Raven shook her head, not looking like she believed him either. “We could really use Jessica right now,” she said.
“Who’s Jessica?” I asked.
“One of the other humans who was being kept here. She could tell when people were lying or telling the truth.”
I hadn’t gotten a chance to introduce myself to Raven yet, but that would come later. Obviously she knew I was on her side. Right now, we had more important things to discuss. “How could she tell?” I asked.
“She was gifted,” Raven explained. “We all are.” She motioned to the other humans to show what she meant.
“Fascinating.” I gazed at the humans with newfound admiration.
Mary—the leader of the Haven—had already agreed to let us to bring these humans to her kingdom. She was just as curious about why the demons had taken them as we were.
She was going to be even more interested once she learned they weren’t just normal humans, but gifted ones.
“What do the demons want with all these gifted humans?” I asked. “You know, Dr. Foster. Don’t you?”
I didn’t expect him to answer—yet. But he didn’t need to know that. We’d crack him in time.
“I don’t,” he said. “Even if I did, I wouldn’t tell.”
“Well, we’re all heading off to the Haven, and you’re coming with us.” I was able to speak freely about our plans, since Thomas had turned off all recording devices. No need to worry about demons listening in here. “We’ll see how long you stick to that story once we’re there.”
I pulled my sword away from his neck and sheathed it by my side. Dr. Foster was just a simple male witch—he had no chance of getting out of here.
He knew it too, since he made no moves to fight. He just rubbed at his neck, his head hung in defeat.
With my hands now free, I pulled out my cell phone to make a call.
Shivani—our witch contact at the Haven—answered on the first ring. “I take it everything went according to plan?” she asked.
“The demons are all cleared from the bunker,” I confirmed. “But it won’t be long until someone notices they’re gone. We’ve got one vampire, one shifter, one male witch, and thirty-six gifted humans ready for transport. We need them all out of here, now.”
“Gifted humans?” Shivani repeated. “Are you sure?”
“I am.”
“We’ll send our best witches to retrieve them,” she said. “Mary’s going to love this.”
“Yes.” I smiled as I looked at the surprisingly healthy humans around me. “She most certainly will.”
