—SCBWI for the work-in-progress grant that motivated me to persevere.
—Louise and Trixie for reading earlier versions and planting seeds of inspiration.
—the Kampala and Entebbe Goan Institutes for permission to use the photographs.
—Rebecca Aronson for taking a chance on this story and joining me on a path of firsts—first acquisition for an editor and first novel for a writer. You are incredible.
—Mabel Hsu and the team at Katherine Tegen Books for embracing this story and designing a brilliant book.
—the families and people affected by Idi Amin’s expulsion order. I am in awe of how you persevered in the face of adversity. He forced you to leave everything, but he couldn’t take away your determination, resilience, and spirit for life. Thank you for allowing me to tell your story.
And finally . . .
—the biggest thanks to my husband and daughter for your unwavering support.
