“Shit! What are we gonna do?” Ramses said.
“Just brace yourselves,” Goran said. “Enjoy the ride.”
Ramses heard the loud sound of an explosion in the distance. Ksenia closed her eyes and hid her face in the blanket.
Goran extended his thumb and looked at it.
“No!” Ramses said. “I know what you’re thinking. Don’t do it. It’s all bullshit.”
On the Internet, he came across the post advising how to check if you were in the safe zone during a nuclear blast. You should stick out your arm and look at the explosion mushroom. If you can cover a nuclear explosion with the thumb of your extended arm, you’re out of reach of the heat and the blast. Then he read an article, which exploded this myth.
“It’s all bullshit, man,” Ramses said. “You mustn’t look at the flash. It’ll burn your retina.”
Goran nodded. “I’ll pray then.” He folded his hands in a prayer and half-closed his eyes.
Ramses was paralyzed with fear. Any moment, he expected a destroying wave heat, hotter than the sun, to vaporize them. He shut his eyes tight and pressed his black flat to the wall of the basket, beads of sweat on his forehead.
He shivered when he felt somebody touch his hand. He opened his eyes. It was Ksenia.
“Look,” she said, pointing up in the air.
A flock of birds was flying above their heads. The terrible sound of the explosion had probably broken their formation, but now they were gathering again, lining up into a V-pattern.
“We’re safe,” she said with a little trace of a smile. “We’re going to be fine.”
