Her Unexpected Cowboy (Unforgettable Cowboys Book 1) Page 16

by Danae Little

The crowd of people that had been causing him to pull at his tux’s collar for the last twenty minutes faded off into the distance. They ceased to exist.

When Syd’s dad handed her to him, Jameson bent close to her ear and whispered, “I am the luckiest man on this earth.”

He was awarded with a beautiful pink flush that faded out her freckles as she shyly looked down at their hands intertwined. Her strong hands gripped his as if she needed his strength to help her pull through. The feeling warmed Jameson. He loved knowing that this strong, independent woman still needed him.

His thumb caressed the back of her hand as the pastor began the ceremony. He had memorized his vows and all he would say, but the act became like a fuzzy dream.

In a matter of moments, Sydney would be his for the rest of their lives. His heart raced with the thought, the same sensation that had begun the moment she met him at the door with a shotgun aimed at his heart. A smile tugged its way across his lips. He didn’t know what it was that led him towards that moment in time, whether it was a wish as Syd confessed to him awhile back, fate, God, or whatever, he knew he had been meant to be with the angel in his arms.

  ~*~

  Not even a year later...

Syd thrummed her fingers on the kitchen table. Her heart raced and she looked again towards the bathroom where the stick still sat on the counter. When the popping of gravel sounded in the driveway she stood in a rush. The world turned black for a moment, so she steadied herself with one hand holding the table for support, the table that brought so many good memories to her.

  Jameson was home.

Her mind spun with all the ways she could tell him. He had wanted this from the very beginning. He asked for it on their wedding night, but would reality sing a different tune? Her head swam with so many unknowns.

Jameson strode from his Sheriff’s truck like a man with an agenda. Uh-oh, her news may have to wait...

  ~*~

Jameson couldn’t wait to get home to Syd. He was so excited to tell her that his body was full of adrenaline. He thought she would be happy, almost positive. That thought gave him a little pause as he slowed to greet Guardian.

“Hey boy, did you protect Syd today? Good boy.” He smiled, loving how he started talking to the animals like Syd did. “Wife, I’m home!” he said with a laugh as he came through the door.

“I don’t think I’ll ever tire of you calling me that, Husband.” Sydney fell into his arms and kissed him, just a little longer than normal. “How was your day?”

“You ask like we didn’t talk several times.” He chuckled and kissed her once more. “Why are you so fidgety?”

Sydney wrapped her fingers around each other and shrugged. “Why were you in such a rush to get inside?”

“What, can’t a man be excited to see his wife after the end of a long day?”

Syd eyed him. She knew him too well.

“Okay. Okay. So, it’s time to elect a new Sheriff, and you know I’ve been going back and forth about what to do. Should I run or not?”

Syd nodded, and her eyes widened. She squeezed her lips together like she held back a secret, but he had to keep going.

“I know it’s been difficult with all the crazy calls in the middle of the night for cows going missing and such. I feel like I missed out on a big part of the kidding time.” He paused to take a breath. “Well, I’ve decided that I want to ranch full-time with you.”

Syd blew out a long breath, a look of relief washing over her face. Phew. Jameson allowed his body to relax as he realized he made the right decision. He hoped that was what she had wanted, and he hoped that working with her might relieve enough stress she could finally get pregnant.

“You’re okay with that?” he asked her.

“You’re timing couldn’t be more perfect.” She smiled in an I-have-a-fantastic-surprise-for-you kind of way.

“You going to tell me why?”

Syd opened her mouth, closed it, and giggled.

“Come on, Syd. I’m dying here.” He felt like it. For some reason his adrenaline began to pound even faster than before. His face felt hot and his hands began to sweat.

  “I’m pregnant!”

Jameson blinked, trying to decipher if he heard her correctly. They had been trying for almost a year now, and he was beginning to wonder if there was a problem. But no...they were having a baby! He picked her up and twirled her around.

“Really? You’re sure?” He gazed deep into her beautiful, mysterious eyes.

She nodded, ran back to the bathroom, and came back with a white stick. “Two pink lines.”

Sure enough, two bright pink lines lit the indentation in the pregnancy test.

Once again everything seemed to line up for them. He brought his wife to him, held her tightly, and then laid a hand on her belly. They were starting a family.

  ~*~

Sydney tip-toed quietly out of the room. She had laid their six-month-old son down in his crib next to his big sister’s bed. She slept like an angel, sun-washed hair spread like a halo on her pillow. With a sigh, Sydney watched her beautiful children. She had been blessed. Both of her kids were sound sleepers. Of course, it could be the long hours playing and working on the ranch that made them sleep so well.

She smiled at the thought. Her Aunt Mag always said there was no better cure for insomnia than a good ol’ day on the ranch.

With one last, longing look at her two blessings, she slipped down the hall to her bedroom. Jameson sat in the glow of the computer screen, typing away on the keyboard. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him on the neck.

“Anything interesting on Unforgettable Cowboys tonight?” She had encouraged him to reach out to other people with amnesia, to help him deal with the fact that he still couldn’t remember some things, especially the months before he woke up on the side of the road. The support forum he found online was called Unforgettable Cowboys: A Wyoming Amnesia Support Group.

“Actually, yes.” He titled his head back to kiss her on the lips. “The kids go down easy?”

  “Always. We’re blessed.”

“Yes, we are.” He kissed her again and then refocused on the computer.

“So, what’s so interesting?” She sat at the edge of the bed, still close enough to touch him.

“There’s a new member. He has taken it upon himself to take in a gal who had an accident right in front of him. She has no memory of who she is, where she’s from, nothing. He rescued her before her car tumbled over into a deep canyon. It’s irretrievable, at least until after winter.”

“Wow, it’s amazing he was able to save her.”

  “I agree.” He nodded.

“So, she’s okay, other than amnesia?”

“She has some injuries, but nothing more serious than some broken bones.”

“That is pretty interesting. Not too far from our own story.” She leaned up and kissed his head.

  “It gets even more remarkable.”

  “Yeah?”

  “She thinks she remembers him.”

“But no one else?” Sydney cocked her head.

“Well, the thing is, they had never even really met. She dropped her purse at a restaurant, and he helped her pick it up before she drove off, all only minutes before the accident.”

“So what advice are you giving him?”

“I don’t know much, just to give her time and try to jar her memory with questions and helping her find her family.” His eyebrows furrowed.

  “That’s pretty heavy stuff.”

“Not as heavy as what I brought along with me.” He typed a farewell and then shutdown the computer.

“Well, we handled it. Or I should say, you handled it.”

Jameson pulled her up into an embrace. “We handled it together. I don’t know where I would be without you.”

“And I you,” she said, wrapping her arms around him.

In his arms she always felt safe, like she was right where she belonged and nothing else m
attered. Whether it was her wish that started this all or not, she would be forever grateful that her unexpected cowboy ended up on her doorstep all those years ago. Her life had only increasingly become more and more rewarding and full of love.
