Cosmic Interlude Page 2

by Stephen W. Sumner

because things got too spicy.

  At last,

  the iceberg breaks down,

and talks to his salty cousin.

  MOUNTAIN

Though I am not a mountain child,

It is up there I long to be,

For among the peaks my old life died,

Tumbling as if a mild snow storm,

And blown away by the new dawn,

By my rebirth as a young man,

Full of fresh hope, ready to face down,

Dragging from life the best it has,

And most surely even the worst,

For am I not made of the same,

Rock and dirt as are those mountains?

  NO MORE

what? a barren field, unbroken white,

  hasn't had any disturbance.

it doesn't care, and might actually prefer it.

the colorlessness burns its way into my soul.

every time i shut my eyes, inspiration disappears.

  perfection here mocks my existence.

all of it screams at me, tauntingly, hauntingly, saying...

go ahead, do something about me, what are you waiting for?

echoes of the past 15 years come scrabbling up my spine.

not this time, though, for i am up to the challenge!

oracles would happily die, to feel this rush of power...

my essence coalesces, my mind becomes a juggernaut,

onward rushing, thoughts conspiring to break the silence,

rise up my nearly broken spirit, like a phoenix, rise...

enter words onto this page, that it be white no more.

  ODYSSEY

  Over the roads I sped,

  Driven by overwhelming desire,

  Yearning for the journey,

  Seeking every mile,

  Searching for the ultimate destiny,

  Eagerly abandoning,

  Yesterday and today.

  LONELY ONE

  Worlds

  of

  ugliness

  live on

  death.

  Desperately

  I

  ask.

  No

  answer.

  Going

  out

  or

  undersea,

  the

  world

  is

  turbulent.

  Here,

  my mind roams

  eternally.

  Were

  it

  lumine, it would be

  lonely.

  Still, I

  hear

  echoes.

  SEARCHING

  Wandering singly,

When silence is the word to watch,

  Colors changing rapidly,

Now the sound rushes at your ears,

Empty memories of your school hood years,

New thoughts running through your mind,

  Longing, for magic minutes,

  Yearning, for your buddy's funning,

  Searching.

  WATCHING HER

I'm watching my lover dream tonight,

The tell-tale movement under her lids,

  The rapid shallow breathe,

I wonder if I am in her nocturnal,

Subconscious world, as often as she says,

And what if I am not?

It matters not, as long as I am here,

For if I'm able to watch her dream,

She's still a part of mine.

  ROADS

  I'm wandering,

  Traveling the roads of life,

  But there're too many potholes,

I think my springs are flat.

  Here,

Seems like a good place for a turning,

  But I've got to wait,

  For the signal arrow,

  The traffic's getting thick.

I push the pedal to go,

  And suddenly my engine sputters,

I wish I'd gotten that tune up,

  But for now,

Just let me make it across the street.

  SLEEP

  Long are the days,

  Short are the nights,

  For insomniacs like me,

  Life's not as simple,

Not like it used to be,

  Now wandering the yard,

  With the stars at night,

  Exhausted but unable to sleep,

  Is it physiological?

  Or is it the question,

  That keeps me awake?

  Why can't I sleep?

  SNOW AND RIVER

  The unbroken field of snow,

  Brings a clarity of thought,

A glimpse of whatever you sought,

So fragile it's hard to know.

The steady rush of rapid river,

Sweeps away the clutter of mind,

  Leaving only a simple find,

Of peace, though only a sliver.

  VISIONS

Visions of my life that could've been,

Pass before my eyes, makes me sad sometimes,

To think I might have missed,

  All I've already been through.

Why does my youth lost imagination,

Tempt me to frustration, makes me mad,

  It doesn't seem to care,

And plays upon my feverish thoughts.

Away, go away, i say, do not bother me again,

My life is not a bore, it fits like a glove,

So there it slinks in silence,

Finally, I am left to enjoy my peace.

  SIMPLE THINGS

  Simple things,

  Have a habit,

  Of getting me down,

  And even though,

  I've seen the light,

  It always,

  Seems to blind me.

  Guess that it's,

  Just the way,

  Things work for me,

  'cause even though,

  I may seem pushy,

  It’s mostly,

  Just an act,

  For I'm the one,

  Who's pushed around.

  Crazy, though,

  I just don't know,

  I'll always,

  Come back for more.

  Now, I learn fast,

  Most of the time,

  But for some things,

  It just takes time.

  So, maybe,

  It'll sink in.

  Maybe someday,

  If you're not there,

  I'll get around,

  To facing the music,

  That I can't hear.

  Then I'll find out,

  Life was meant as,

  Just another,

  Little problem.

  For right now, though,

  I'd like to know,

  Will you please share,

  My life with me?

  SOUL ART

  My pulse exultantly reverberates,

Tracing the chambers of my heart and mind,

Echo location of my longing for you.

My breath in susurrant dance performs,

Tickling the edge of my perception,

Telling remembrances of my desire for you

My dreams though distant envelope me,

Painting color on the canvas of my soul,

Gentle brush strokes of my memories of you.

THE STARS ABOVE THE SEA OF LOVE

I left my heart in the Sea of Rhyme,

Blown away by the winds of Time,

&nbs
p; For distant moon we sail away,

The light of love will shine the way.

Like a potent spell our love we grew,

Born as a seed on the winds that blew,

With a gentle breeze I call your name,

You look at me and I feel the same.

We ride the winds to the stars above,

And drink the wine from the Sea of Love,

The light of day won't burn as bright,

As the heavens and our love at night.

We walk together in the fallen snow,

And share the secrets of the rainbow,

I see my tears in the falling rain,

When you're by my side I feel no pain.

When our time is done and our vessels gone,

I know our love will always linger on,

It will shine at night on the Sea of Love,

Written on the moon and the Stars above.

  TEMPEST

Our love is but a tempest,

  A storm-tossed sea.

  With the depth and breadth,

  Deep and dark,

  As passionate as the sea.

  With push and pull,

  And give and take,

  A power without measure.

  A treasure trove of mystery,

  And also, understanding.

  Calm in places,

Not unlike the eye of a hurricane,

  And underneath,

  A gentle wash of warmth,

  And sometimes cool.

  Fed as the seas,

  By the winds,

  The breath of God.

Our love is but a tempest,

  A storm-tossed sea.

  YET AGAIN

I woke last night to the sounds of sleep,

  Went outside for a cigarette,

There I heard an insomniac bird,

Singing, or maybe dictating a book on cassette,

  No two calls sound alike,

I feel caught between two worlds,

The bird's own and one of sleep,

So I throw the butt into the street,

And close the door on nocturnal chatter,

Returning to my dark and cozy room,

  Steady humming from the fan,

My lover illuminated by the dim light,

Of my cyber world and sleepless night,

  And lying hither and yon,

Across my side of the bed,

  Like a sightless kitten,

  Searching for body heat,

And so I wait for sleep to find me,

  Yet again.

  RESORT

If I had a rocket ship,

  I'd blast off, into space,

Maybe look for a cosmic pool,

  Where I could kick back,

Or swim thru the rippling light,

Or work on my star tan.

I wonder if anyone would visit,

If I opened a resort villa,

With a good view of Crab Nebula,

  Although, after a while,

I'm sure it would get crowded,

  When all the slick operators,

Saw what a wonderful deal I had.

  What do you think?

  Should I bring a stick?

  THE GHOST OF MY PAST

The ghost of my past goes creeping about,

Filling me with doubt, hard tremors that last,

My fevered brow sweats and beating heart pounds,

The ghost of my past goes creeping about,

Yes, my fears abound, how dare you to ask,

It taunts me and laughs, hunts me like a hound,

The ghost of my past goes creeping about,

Filling me with doubt, hard tremors that last.

  UNKNOWN

  it senses me

  and challenges me from nowhere

  i look about me

  i do not find it

  this scares me

  again, it calls me

and i look into the darkness

and i realize it is not of this world

  my name it knows,

  my fear grows

and the chill feeling creeps up on me

the sweat drips down my brow

and the wind dries it there

  i stand frozen

  hands clenched in fear

  my muscles grow stiff

and still i dare not move

  my mouth goes dry

  my throat gets parched

the hair in my eyes hurts them

my feet and legs are tired

  my back is cramped

and the groan in my belly escapes thru my throat

  i faint from exhaustion

  later

  i know not how long

  i come to

i open my eyes and find the same

only there is a small shaft of light,

  light in this godforsaken place

i do not know where it comes from

  but i sigh and grin

  it helps

the light trickles through the dust

which muffles the whisper that excites it

relief floods my body with warmth

  i think

  but i cannot move

for my arms and legs are missing.

  VANISHING POINT

  Be

  ever

  vigilant,

  Pluto

  lives

  under-

  seas.

  Still

  the

  end

  vanishes

  eternally.

  Be

  undiscouraged,

  though, it

  meets

  after

  you, and just

  beyond the

  edge, and

  I'll

  take it, with

  me,

  into the

  guarded

  hell, of

  time.

  Here,

  all the

  violent

  endings will

  be in

  every

  empty

  night, and we'll

  die

  in

  agony,

  no need for

  any tears, but

  be

  ever

  vigilant,

  Pluto

  lives

  under-

  seas, and

  still,

  the

  end

  vanishes

  eternally.

  MY THOUGHTS WANDER LIKE FIREFLIES

My thoughts wander like fireflies on a summer night,

Not quite tracing the jumbled outline of broken field,

Dark for a few moments then others bright.

From the corner of my eye one may flicker to light,

to blinker out as soon as my attention's sealed,

My thoughts wander like fireflies on a summer night.

Jumbled patterns are traced by their flight,

As suddenly extinguished as quickly revealed,

Dark for a few moments then others bright.

I could capture one from the air in midflight,

But once in my grasp it would just be concealed,

My thoughts wander like fireflies on a summer night,

And yes though they inside my head are locked tight,

Seldom can I use them for they seldom yield,

Dark for a few moments then others bright.

From up, down, corner to corner, a
s well as left and right,

Often deeply mesmerized I watched as they wheeled,

My thoughts wander like fireflies on a summer night,

Dark for a few moments then others bright.

  MILORD'S FOOTMAN

  I am proud,

  Of my position,

  To serve,

  Before Milord.

  Because I am,

  Milord's footman.

  My duty, my life,

  I live only to serve,

  And I am ever ready,

  If Milord needs,

  To die for the cause.

  At a moment’s notice,

  I am ready to melee,

  With all abandon,

  To save Milord, my King.

  And show I am,

  Milord's footman.

  I ask Milord for orders,

  Eager to obey,

  There is no question,

  Of where my loyalties lay,

  I bow and leave,

  My mission to fulfill.

  Milord's trust in me,

  My courage I display,

Standard, sword, and shield I bear,

  And enter into the fray.

  And ever am I,

  Milord's footman.

  MILADY'S GUARDIAN

  Here we are,

  In full battle dress,

  In ready formation,

  The enemy across the field.

  And here am I,

  Milady's guardian.

  First to advance,

  Probably first to die,

  Last to see the strategy,

  If I survive,

And wondering if I am a decoy.

  I brandish sword,

  To threaten the enemy,

  And protect my Queen,

Though I feel it is futile.

  But here am I,

  Milady's guardian.

  Some threat am I,

  A mere foot soldier,

  And Milady on horse,

  More dangerous than I,

  And I wonder,

  If Milady indeed needs me.

  But for love of Milady,

  I would die,

  And willingly,

And go where she would have me go.

  For here am I,

  Milady's guardian.

  KING BARIMBOR'S BALLAD

  A cry, A cry,

  Deep in the night.

  The wail of one,

  Who's born in fright.

  A child, A child,

  soon to be man.

  Too soon a boy,

  To rule this land.

  A man, A man,

  Before his time.

  With sword so sharp,

  His mind sublime.

  A King, A King,

  To bride be wed,

  To sire his child,

  And kingdom led.

  A war! A war!
