The Key to Rondo Page 27

by Emily Rodda

‘Not at all,’ Hal said robustly. ‘Why do you think I’m here talking to you now, when I should have been dead long before you were born? It’s not just because time goes more slowly here. It’s also because time stops whenever the music box does, and we all have a rest.’

He laughed at Leo’s horrified expression. ‘There’s nothing to worry about,’ he said. ‘We aren’t aware that we’re having these rests from time. To us, each rest is just the space between one blink and the next. That’s all.’

Mimi was nodding. But Leo shook his head. ‘All I can say is, I’m glad our world isn’t like that,’ he said fervently.

‘Oh?’ Hal asked dryly. ‘How do you know it’s not?’

And that gave Leo something to think about, all the way home.
