The logic of Magic Page 2

by Dylan Burnell

Part three: Send your magic into a precious gem. A ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald works best and are the most powerful. Other gems will work but it is not advised because they are weak in nature and could possibly explode from the overflow. If you are extremely powerful or are not, sure what gem you want or need arrange all three around you and your magic will choose.

If successful, your gem will glow and you will feel drained. If more than one gem glows, you have more power. For a complete list of gems that are usable, go to page 9. Just as I finish dad runs back into the room with a vial of something glowing blue and some gems. Did you finish it he asks as he throws the gems on the bed next to me. Yeah I just finished the test, But what are the gems FOR I ask feeling confused. All the book said was that I needed one? Don’t worry about it yet. Have you chosen a gem my dad asks as he fiddles nervously. No I say as I look over the gems lying next to me. I hold my hand over each one in turn. Starting to feel stupid because I do not feel anything special about them I look at my dad angrily. Let’s just try them all.

Fine give me a second to arrange the gems. he grabs the gems and shoves the glowing vial into my hands . Hold that he says distractedly as he starts to place the gems on the ground . Ok he says as he gets up with a huff. Are you sure that you want to try this now? I look over at the gems and at the glowing potion in my hands. Yeah ... yeah, I am sure.

  Chapter two

My eyes start to glow blue and I feel intense pain as if I am being burnt alive. A shrill scream going through my ears. It is so loud that it hurts and it takes me a second to realize that it is coming from me. Finally, when I believe that I am going to die or explode or combust! The pain disappears. I look around and my eyes settle on all of the many gems my dad laid down what must have been minutes before.

As I watch Blue light engulfs three of the gems and blinds us. My eyes water as the light becomes painfully bright. When I close my eyes all light in the room is gone, and when I open them again and I am in a clearing. It looks like a ruined temple but as I watch it repairs itself and is returned to its former glory. It is as if I am in a dream I walk forward and into the temple. The pillars rising far above me to hold up a domed roof. In the center of the magnificent structure lies a fountain. A pulsating blue ball resting on the top; the water splashing around it yet never touching it.

I move up to the fountain, I can feel my heart racing in my chest. I look down into the water and see ... nothing. I take a step back in confusion and the water starts to swirl. The blue ball starts to turn Black and dull the dream eats itself in a matter of seconds, every color running into another until it is all black. silence. Not even a stray thought. You are chosen. The voice materializes from the nothingness. You are Chosen to bring magic back to this dyeing world. I start to shiver but not in fear. The voice is soothing almost hypnotic. What do you mean I exclaim! The voice continues as if it did not hear me. You shall train under me and I will make you the strongest mage the world has ever seen. What do I have to do? my voice starts to tremble halfway through. Do you accept this task? The voices dull monotone voice seems to stretch forever as I think over my answer.

I accept I scream. Suddenly Light and I am back in my room Surrounded by 3 glowing gems. My dad standing on the outside of the circle with the rest in his hands. Finally! he exhales. You have been there for the last hour! I sit up and start to rub my head . which for some reason feels like it got trampled by a heard of horses. I look around me and notice that there is a forth gem. An emerald, ruby, sapphire and now a diamond. Each one glowing gently in their respected colors. What happened to you? my dad interrupts my thoughts. I ... I don’t remember much. There was a ton of light . Then I was awake again but I was at an old temple. Then a voice. Then nothing. I strain trying to remember what the voice had told me. I look up and my dad is gone from the doorway. I get up and grab the old leather bound book.
