“Great,” Dane said.
Heath smiled, unsure what to think of his big boss.
“Well then, grab your stuff and meet me in the lobby. I’ll tidy up in here,” Mr. Pristine said. “And thanks for getting those loans out, boys. The lending company was as impressed as I was.”
“You’re quite welcome,” Dane said, moving toward the door.
“Yeah, thanks,” Heath said.
“One more thing, Sanders,” Mr. Pristine said as they were almost out the door. “Quick word with you.”
Dane looked at Heath and nodded for him to leave. Heath walked into the hall, but waited right outside the door, ready to come back at any moment. If Dane were going to get in trouble for this, he wasn’t going down alone.
“Yes, Mr. Pristine?” Dane asked, approaching Mr. Pristine, his voice a little shaky.
“I wanted you to know that I’m glad that things are working out for you,” Mr. Pristine said.
“That’s it?” Dane asked.
“That’s it,” Mr. Pristine said. “Well, that, and as you know, it’s good to have you on board. You and your friend did a magnificent job getting those loans out. Keep up the good work.”
“Will do,” Dane said.
“Great. Now go get ready. That snow driver is charging by the minute,” Mr. Pristine said, smiling as he watched Dane walk out the door.
Epilogue
Heath hurriedly worked on the folder in front of him. It was the last loan that they had to push through that evening, and he had no desire to stay any later tonight.
“Suzanne’s here,” Dane said from the doorway, a packing envelope in his hand.
It was only the two of them in the building again, and Heath looked at Dane with a smile before grabbing the packing envelope and filling it with the documents they needed to mail out.
“I’ll take it to Suzanne,” Dane said, tossing Heath a key card. “You grab our stuff. We need to get out of here before the snow comes.”
Heath stood and laughed as he watched Dane practically race through the room of cubicles. He packed his stuff and then used the key card to get into Dane’s office. It only took him a second to grab Dane’s jacket and briefcase. He picked up the phone on Dane’s desk and dialed.
“So, we’re heading out to South Carolina,” he said into the phone. “Yes, we’ll be safe. We should be able to get out of here before the snow comes and since it’s coming from the north and we’re going south, it should be fine. Oh, well we planned to stay the whole weekend there. We even took Monday off, but if the snow locks us out of here, we’ll be fine. It’s been a while since we’ve taken a day off and Mr. Pristine says he still owes us for those days last year. Yeah, the snow storm. I know, hard to believe it’s been so long. Yeah, Amanda’s place is big. I know, Baby Sarah’s first birthday. It’s crazy. Yeah, Roger’s ex and the kids will be there too. I know, who would have thought? Oh, no she landed on her feet. Uh huh, another lawyer from her firm, and he’s hot. I will, and he’ll say the same once I tell him. Yes, we’ll be back by next week, snow or not. We close on the house on the fifteenth. Love you, Mom. You too, Dad. Okay. Bye.”
A few seconds after Heath hung up the phone, there was a light tapping on the glass of Dane’s office. Heath pushed open the door and Dane walked in.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to lock you out,” Heath said.
“No worries,” Dane replied, grabbing some of the things Heath carried and leaning in for a kiss. “Let’s get out of here before the snow comes. I want to get down that hill.”
“You’re sure we didn’t forget anything at home?” Heath asked.
“I loaded everything you packed last night when you were in the shower this morning,” Dane assured him.
“Even the baby’s gift?”
“Especially the baby’s gift,” Dane said, reaching over and tousling Heath’s hair.
“It’s weird we’re all friends now,” Heath said. “Kind of cool.”
“I’m just glad that you and I are a whole lot more than friends now,” Dane said, leaning down and kissing Heath again.
Heath allowed himself to be drawn into the kiss for a minute, pulling Dane as close as he could while both of them held work bags. He stopped, pulled away, and smiled at Dane. “We need to go.”
“Okay, but plan on being attacked this evening,” Dane said with a laugh.
“In the guest room?” Heath asked.
“It’s a big house. Anyway, I thought we liked small places,” Dane said, looking around his office. “It’s where we got our start.”
“Let’s go,” Heath said, grabbing Dane’s arm and moving them toward the door. “By the way, my parents send their love.”
“Oh, I would have liked to have talked to them,” Dane said, the disappointment apparent in his voice.
“We’ll call them back from the car,” Heath said, shaking his head and smiling.
“Fine, but you’re driving the first part of the trip. If we hit snow I want you to try. It’s important that you finally learn how to deal with it,” Dane said as they moved through the giant room of cubicles and toward the lobby.
“Oh, I know what to do in a snow storm, sir,” Heath said, lightly swatting Dane on the ass and hoping that his action wasn’t caught on camera.
