The Nazi Spy Page 26

by Alan Hardy

But it would never happen, would it?

Because, contrary to what Matthew, and Churchill and Roosevelt, believed, America also would never enter the war.

Congress wouldn’t allow it. America was in one of its isolationist phases. It wanted no truck with yet another European war.

The only way America would enter the war would be if Germany attacked it. And Hitler wouldn’t be so stupid, would he? Or one of Hitler’s allies, for example, Japan. Japan wouldn’t be so crazy as to launch an unprovoked attack on America, and face the devastating consequences, would it?

So, Fiona could sleep happy in her bed, with Matthew by her side, assured of a golden future.

There was no way in which she would ever have to choose between, on the one hand, Matthew, and, on the other, her personal well-being and social position, was there?

Fiona tip-toed up the stairs to check on Matthew. He was fast asleep.

  She just had time.

She went quickly to her new secret place, took out her radio transmitter, and sent a message in code to her German handlers in Berlin.

When deciphered, it read as follows:

EVERYTHING HAS GONE ACCORDING TO PLAN. AWAITING FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS.

  The reply came almost immediately:

EXCELLENT WORK, AGENT F. MAINTAIN RADIO SILENCE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Fiona crept back to the master bedroom.

She was ecstatic. Her future with Matthew was secured. She had worked out that the only way things could possibly go wrong was if Germany attacked Russia, and, say, Japan attacked America, and that was never going to happen, was it?
