The Legacy Series (Book 2): The Ranch [A Legacy of Violence] Page 41

by Liscom, Sean

“Can they live with us? I mean, if they want to,” she asked quietly. I didn’t even have to give the question any thought before I answered.

“Yes, they can live with us,” she smiled and put her head back against the headrest.

“Looks like Mother Angelica was right after all…..” her voice trailed off. That got a hearty chuckle from me.

  “So were you.”

“How’s that?” she looked at me again.

“You weren’t pregnant,” she giggled a little and the look in her eyes changed to something more mischievous.

“Not yet,” she said putting her head back again. This time she closed her eyes.

The drive into Elko was as quiet as I could ever remember. Major Jackson was going to hold everyone there for a briefing in the morning. I

decided that I was ready to sleep in my own bed with my wife. It was something that I had sorely missed. Melissa took us out of town and straight to the ranch. As we approached the gate, Braden spoke up from the front seat.

  “That’s weird….”

“What?” Jill asked quietly so as not to wake Luke.

“All of the lights are off,” he shifted in his seat. Melissa pulled up and stopped short of the gate and shut the headlights and engine off. “What are you doing?” he asked. She ignored him. Instead, she looked over the seat at me.

“I’m sorry it has to be this way,” she said flatly. She opened her door and got out of the truck, slamming it behind her.

“What the hell?” Braden said. He turned to get out of his door and the whole truck was lit up by weapons mounted lights and the main lights on the gate.

“Oh shit!” I heard Jill mutter as she pushed Luke onto the floor, I did the same with Tara.

“Get out of the truck with your hands in the air!” a male voice boomed through the speaker at the gate. The three of us slowly opened the doors and stepped out with our hands up. All three of us were immediately grabbed by people wearing black from head to toe. We were relieved of our weapons and told to stand in front of the truck.

The bright spotlights made it impossible it see anything that was happening in the shadows. We could see the gate swing open and three people stepped forward. With the bright lights in our eyes, there was no way to make out any of their features but the one in the middle was probably a man and the other two were women. We must have looked like a whole herd of deer caught in the headlights of a speeding semi-truck.

“You should see yourselves,” the male voice said. There was a vaguely familiar sound about it. He laughed a little. “You see, I told you girls, didn’t I? The looks on their faces would be purely magical, priceless even!” the voice said.

The two women stepped farther into the light. They were identical twins. I knew one as Kari, Braden knew the other as Isabella. When the man stepped into the light. My heart stopped.

  “OH….” Jill said quietly.

  “MY….” I whispered.

  “GOD…..” Braden finished.

“Is that any way to greet your long lost father and your sisters?” Jack Sterling asked as the trio stepped fully into the light.
