Detective Constable Jamilla Khatoon: newly promoted to CID, DC Jamilla (Millie) Khatoon is experienced in the role of Family Liaison Officer (FLO). A dedicated and conscientious officer, Millie joined the police against the wishes of her traditional Muslim parents, though there has since been a reconciliation. She is married to Suliman.
Detective Chief Inspector Davina Sharp: Mariner’s boss is an ambitious, modern-style police officer who excelled throughout training and has held senior positions elsewhere in the country. Keen to make her mark, she nonetheless values the knowledge and experience of the people working for her and does what she can to support them in doing an effective job.
Anna Barham: Mariner’s former lover, who now lives with Gareth in a Herefordshire village.
Katarina: a nineteen-year-old Albanian young woman trafficked and forced into prostitution, who temporarily resides with Mariner.

Susan Brady: Nina Silvero’s assistant at the dance school.
Rachel Hordern: step-daughter of Nina Silvero and married to Adam Hordern. The couple have a young son, Harry.

Lucy Jarret: a thirty-something health visitor, recently married to Will.
Will Jarrett: originally from North Carolina, USA, he now has British residency and is a folk musician/singer with the Leigh Hawkins Band.
Paula Kirkwood: a health visitor and Lucy Jarret’s colleague.
Julie-Ann Shore: an old school friend of Lucy Jarrett.
