“…I…” She started and sighed. She closed her eyes, gathered her breath, and when she opened them, she looked me straight in the eye. “I owe you an apology, Beverly.”

  “Thank you,” I said quietly.

“When I first learned of you, I only knew what happened with Raquel and Alex. And I knew there was just no way in hell you could be trusted. I figured the truth could come out at any time, and once it did, you could take it out on Rocky. Being that she’s my best friend, I wouldn’t allow that to happen. I wanted her to tread carefully.”

  I nodded, understanding completely.

“We’ve become more acquainted, and yes, you’re cool, but then this whole situation with my brother made things more complicated.”

“Care to explain?” Romeo pushed, giving her a deadly look. Dilayla’s pretty eyes narrowed to slits and rolled when she looked at him.

“I haven’t seen my brother take many women serious. I’ve seen sides of him that have made me wonder about his ability to commit.” Romeo cleared his throat, sending her a silent threat. “However, I’ve never really been worried about them - the other women. I was concerned for you, considering the freshness of your breakup and the circumstances.”

“That’s not to say I haven’t been concerned for my brother. I definitely don’t want him to get hurt. I’ma stab the fuck out of you if you hurt him, I’ma let you know right now.” Her eyes widened to accommodate her dramatic and feisty expression. “But at the end of the day, I just want to make sure everyone I care for is solid. Because if everyone is solid, I’m solid. And when we’re all solid, then we’re all family. And that’s what’s number one for me at this point in my life.”

“Dilayla, I understand how you feel. I’m very protective of who I keep around me as well. Alex was… it sounds crazy, but he feels so far away. Like I left him behind a long, long time ago,” I said, gesturing for emphasis.

“As for Romeo…” I turned to grab his hand. “I don’t want to pretend I’m deeply in love with him. We just met. And I do agree, things have moved lightning fast. But I am willing to take my time with our engagement, and get to know him as the man I will be madly in love with for the rest of my life.”

Dilayla looked at all of us. I could see there was still doubt in her mind.

“I didn’t want to go there, Dee, but I’m going to have to,” Raquel said, finally speaking up. “You had the same issue with Nick. He went hard for you - fast - and you weren’t sure. He had to prove it to you over the course of a few weeks before you gave in to him. And now here you are pregnant. I married Kenny in a week. Morelli married Dom just as quickly. Why can’t Romeo love Beverly just as much? Doesn’t she deserve the fairytale too?”

Dilayla blushed, and held her tummy. Her ring was saturated with diamonds. “Really bitch? Just bust me out right here in the middle of the restaurant.” She chuckled with light embarrassment.

“I’m just saying,” Raquel said. “Think about it.”

“I… guess you’re right,” Dilayla agreed. “I don’t want to admit it, but you are. You two finding each other isn’t so different from the way Nick and I found each other.”

“Thank you,” Raquel replied, with a dramatic exhale.

“I just want to make sure that when this little baby comes, we’re all in a good place. We’re all genuine. Because you’re going to be an auntie and I expect you and you” — she pointed at both of us — “to be there for me when baby Nick drives me crazy. If you can promise that, then we have a clean slate, and you have my full apologies.”

“Of course,” I said, squealing as excitement rose in my heart. “I never thought I’d ever get to be an auntie!”

“Well there. It’s settled,” Dilayla said. Reaching over to grab my hand, she squeezed it. “Welcome to the family sis. I apologize for being such a bitch to you… I know I was horrible. But if you can forgive me, I promise I’ll make things right.”

Raquel started to cry, and Dilayla followed after her. Being the softy that I was, it wasn’t but two seconds before the tears fell down my eyes also.

The waitress looked confused when she returned, but the smiles on our faces assured her these were tears of joy.

“Don’t worry, we’re all pregnant and hormonal and shit,” Dilayla said. “Well, not this one —“ she pointed to me — “She’s marrying my brother but she’ll be there soon.”

“Girl don’t rush it…” Raquel said. “Let her enjoy her fiancé first.”

  Beverly’s Epilogue

  Six Months Later

“It’s cute, I promise. You look amazing.”

I gave an endearing look to my soon-to-be sister-in-law. Dilayla was in her second trimester, and nervous she looked fat. Thank God for princess gowns, because Raquel was also pregnant.

Both women wore Cinderella style dresses that tapered just enough to create a womanly silhouette, but were loose in the lower half to shield their baby bumps. Their hair and makeup were perfect.

I wore a bustier style wedding gown myself. It was almost an exact replica to theirs, except mine was white and gold, while theirs were pink and gold.

As I put the final touches on their makeup, I stopped to look at them. Six months ago, I left the most horrible relationship I’d ever been in. Once I’d let go, in walked the most incredible man I’d ever met. I gave him a horrible first impression, and we had tons of ups and downs within the first few days we’d met - but he’d seen something in me that wouldn’t let him give up.

  He fought for this moment.

  He fought for me.

  He fought for us.

And he had no idea how badly I needed a man who would do that. Honestly, I had no idea how badly I needed that either.

Looking back, I couldn’t tell you why Alex that had me so hooked. Perhaps I had no idea what to expect from a real man.

  But what did it matter?

He was the best thing I never had.

The best thing I’ll ever have? He was just outside these chambers, waiting for our ceremony to begin.

The three of us double-checked our hair and makeup. We took Snaps and selfies we’d hide until after the wedding. The photographer directed us to take pictures that commemorated the moment. Both Romeo’s mother and mine took photos with us.

Then the music started. I could hear it in the hallway. As the planner approached, I had to fan my face to stop from crying.

  I couldn’t believe it.

  The day had come.

  The moment had arrived.

I was going to marry my own real-life Romeo.

He’d even reached out to my father, and flew him in to walk me down the aisle!

Can I tell you how much I loved this man? His look, his heart, his touch, his taste? The way he anticipated and acted on my behalf? It was like he knew what I needed before I could even discern it for myself.

And over the past six months, he’d made it clear I would always be in safe hands.

He made it safe for me to fall.

  So I did.

And it feels so heavenly to have him… to be held by him. To be uninhibited and free.

  Forever.

  Romeo’s Epilogue

  Six Months Later

Wedding music started. My palms should’ve sweated once things were in motion, but the truth was I wasn’t nervous. I was anxious — but anxious to get this over with.

I wanted to marry Beverly the moment I proposed to her. If she would have let me have my way, we would have gotten married next morning.

My wife, well, fiancee — she’d be my wife in the next few minutes — was scared. Scared to fall so soon. Scared to fall so early. Scared to believe that I meant what I said. And even more scared of dealing with Dilayla.

The past six months required me to give my best. She needed time. Faith. Patience. Consistency.

She needed a man who gave her an open offer with full transparency and no secrets.

It was work. She was worth it.

  The music starte
d. We all made our way down the aisle, taking our respective positions. Then was time for the bride.

When she appeared in the doorway, just before she walked down the aisle, my heart slammed at the sight of her. She looked angelic. Crystals lined the bodice of her dress, and gold accents made her look incredible. Dark curls swirled around her face, giving her the most beautiful look ever.

I could hear the wedding guests gasp as she made her way through the passage. With every step she took forward, my pulse quickened.

She was so beautiful, and in minutes, she’d be all mine, faults, flaws, and all.

I barely heard anything the preacher said. I was distracted by Beverly’s gorgeous face. I controlled myself up until the very second the rings were exchanged, and we were pronounced man and wife.

  “You may now—“

I grabbed her, passionately. Our kiss tasted of unconditional love, and the all the eternal love to come.

“I love you, Mrs. Beverly Blanco.”

“I love you too, Romeo Blanco.”
