The heels were strappy silver sandals. Lila wondered if she should wear her hair up or down, and sweeping her hair back, she realized it looked sexier up. It would show off the back detailing of the dress.

She heard India’s quick intake of breath and glanced up to find her standing there with her eyes filled with excitement.

“You look so…oh God, Lila. I saw this dress, and I knew it was just for you.”

  “You like it?” She smiled.

“Like it? Look at you! I love it!”

“Aren’t you going to try yours?”

“After this? Hell no. I have no chance against this.”

  “Don’t be so melodramatic.”

Lila took the dress off and folded it neatly and placed it back inside the box. She had other things on her mind now. After India left her room, she picked up her phone and dialed Killean’s number. He answered on the second ring.

“Knight,” he answered, his voice clipped.

“Why did you send me black roses?” She cut right to the chase.

  She heard his familiar chuckle.

  “Hello to you too, Lila.”

  “Black roses?” Lila asked. “Why?”

She heard his breathing hitch. “They represent something else for me. It’s like giving you myself in the form of flowers.”

“Are you trying to tell me you have a dark soul? That you’re mysterious?”

  “Did you read the invitation?”

Her heart fluttered in her chest. “Yes.”

“How about the necklace? Did you like that?”

  “Depends what your intentions are.”

“You already know my intentions, Lila, what I want to do to you. I imagine your dark hair spread across my white satin sheets and you wearing nothing but diamonds as I—”

“You fuck me?” she uttered as she ran her fingers along the stones around her neck. The reflection in the mirror was breathtaking. Of course she owned jewelry, but nothing such as this.

“Now you get the picture. Let’s make a deal. If those flowers stay alive for a minimum of four days, I get to take you away.”

  “And if not?”

“The deal still remains. I’ve been dying to suck on those lips. If you’ll let me.”

“That’s not a deal, Killean. That’s just you trying to have things work your way.”

There was a heavy silence down the line.

“Are you afraid to be alone with me?”

Her eyes dropped to his invitation on her bed.

“You make me nervous,” she whispered. “I never know what to expect.”

“I take that as a compliment. I’ll do my best to see to your comfort.”

From the living room, she heard India shout, “Lila, I’m going out. Don’t expect me back soon.”

She heard the front door close. She’d changed into a little silk robe for an evening in her bed and a good book.

“Is this your attempt at romancing me?” she asked.

“What do you think?” he asked incredulously. “Are you home alone?”

  “No.”

“I take it you are. I don’t do romantic gestures, Lila. You’d do well to understand that, but you are my special case, and I believe you deserve to be wooed.”

She grinned. “Wooed? I never knew that word was in your vocabulary.”

“I’m coming by to show you what words are in my vocabulary.” His voice was a low hum that had her body rocking in a delightful shiver.

The line went dead, and it took her a moment to realize what he just said. Shit! He was coming over there. She sprang off the bed in a frantic rush. This man was so frustrating.

She picked up her phone and redialed his number. He answered.

  “Killean?”

“Can’t get enough of me, can you?”

She jumped at the soft purr coming from her doorway. Killean was standing there looking down at his phone before his hooded gaze lifted to meet her eyes. The brute had been on his way the whole time! He was already shrugging out of his jacket as he tossed his keys on the table by the door. She noticed his eyes were on the diamonds around her throat.

“May I come in?” He smirked.

  “That depends,” she retorted.

She swallowed as he loosened his tie and tossed it where his jacket had landed on the floor.

“Would you like something to eat?” Lila asked, fidgeting.

“A taste of you,” he countered, his voice raw and husky.

“I thought you already had that,” she breathed.

“It’s addictive,” he rasped, stepping toward her with the step of a hungry lion. “I need more.”

He pushed her until her back hit the bed, his mouth ardent on hers. Lila couldn’t breathe, gasping for air. His mouth left hers and kissed the curve of her neck, licking and nipping at the delicate skin.

One hand grasped her waist and the other moved up to hold her nape, angling her head so he could dominate the kiss. As she yield to him, her body shuddered, the fight she had building inside slowly slipping away, all her inhibitions dissipating with the feel of his mouth and hands on her. She knew she needed him; she craved him in a way she had never wanted another man in her life.

She didn’t only want to kiss him; she wanted him to bury himself deep inside her, literally and figuratively. She wanted to know the beast inside him and the man too. She groaned as his tongue stroked hers. His fingers brushed her skin, leaving a scorching heat in its wake.

His eyes were filled with a frightening carnality as his hand glided down the length of her thighs. His body moved down between her thighs, and she knew what he wanted. She opened her legs to give him full access, resting them on either side of him. His hand reached up, cupping her ass, and she rose up for him to pull her panties down.

He ran his hands down her abdomen, a finger through her cleft. She watched as his eyes went wild. He put his head between her open thighs. She arched off the bed with a pained cry, pushing into his mouth. The tip of his tongue circled her clit and the heel of her feet dug into the mattress, her head thrashing on the pillow. She reached down to guide his head, his tongue thrusting into her. She felt her juices coating her inner thighs and she wanted to shove him away at the wicked pleasure, but he was insistent on taking down every last bit as she climaxed against his mouth. He lifted his head and licked his lips salaciously. The sight of it made her want him inside her even more.

He slid up her body and captured her mouth in a drugging kiss that left her shuddering and whimpering for more, her body arching further into his. His lips left hers and moved to her chin, biting slightly, and then nipping her earlobe.

“How did that feel?” he asked in a low, seductive voice.

“Good,” she murmured. “Really good, please.”

Claiming her mouth once more, he inserted two fingers into her slowly, his plunges steady and deep. Instinctively, she reached down to rub her clit, building the sizzling sensations. He worked harder, and she clawed his back with her free hand. Suddenly something was vibrating. He didn’t stop until she moaned.

Pulling away slightly, he reached down and pulled his phone from his pocket. He didn’t stop finger-fucking her, his eyes intent on hers and his fingers quickening their pace.

“Knight,” he said, his voice clipped, his eyes on her.

He listened keenly for a long time. She saw his eyes narrow, and then he swallowed so hard his Adam’s apple jerked violently.

“Did anyone get hurt? Okay, keep me posted.”

He hung up and let the phone slide to the floor. “Killean, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing, I need to make you come,” he growled.

Ignoring her, he went back to the task at hand, pleasuring her, his fingers and tongue relentless until everything inside tightened and she was coming so hard her body convulsed.

“One of my apartment complexes went up in flames tonight, the top floor,” he murmured once she had come down from her high. He pulled out of her and brought his fingers
to his mouth, sucking off her cum wetly.

  Oh God!

“Did anyone get hurt?” she croaked.

  “No, thankfully.”

Lila breathed a sigh of relief. “Did they say what caused the fire?”

“No, but my man thinks it’s arson from the looks of it.”

“Why would someone want to set your—?”

“I have no idea. Don’t be so worried,” he said softly. “I’ve got to go handle this. I’m sorry, Lila.”

  “It’s fine, Killean.”

He lowered his head and dropped a kiss to her wet mound, surprising her with his tenderness. If her skin had been any lighter, she would have blushed twelve shades of red. His mouth met hers in a drugging kiss before he stood and fixed his appearance.

“I’m sorry about tonight,” Lila said sincerely.

He leaned into her and kissed her again. “Me too, but we’ll pick up where we left off.”

  “Killean, I didn’t mean—”

“I know what you meant. Be mine, Lila. I can’t function. I need to have you, bound and naked.”

Lila bit her lip, contemplating if this was a good idea. He drew her into his arms, his eyes glittering with an unholy light and a fierceness that threatened to knock the breath from her body.

  “Say yes,” he cajoled.

“Killean, you have things to take care of now,” she murmured. “Perhaps when everything is sorted—”

“I can take care of it, Lila. Trust me. Just say yes.”

His mouth moved against her until she opened on a breathless want, his tongue swiping against hers.

  “Say yes.”

  “Yes.”

His mouth curved into a smile…no, a triumphant declaration of his power.

  “Good, baby, very good.”

Then he kissed her and left in a black blur.

What have I gotten myself into, dear Lord?

  CHAPTER TEN

India weaved her arm through Lila’s as they made their way up the stairs of the banquet hall hosting the evening’s alumni dinner. As they stepped over the threshold, they were greeted with a program for the evening and champagne. Killean was the honored guest speaker, displayed by the large banners at either side of the double doors.

“Is that the guy from the restaurant who we saw with Katherine Hunt?” India asked.

“Yeah, that’s him,” Lila said dismissively as she tucked the program into my clutch. “I must say this place looks fantastic. Check out the buffet.”

“Oooh, there’s Ian,” India chirped gleefully.

  “Go on,” Lila urged.

She kissed Lila’s cheek and hurried off to her man. Lila took in the crowd and spotted Aiden with a brunette. She was sure busty in a black silk mini that clung to her curves. Aiden had his arms around her possessively as he chatted with some of his friends.

A large warm palm settled against her bare back, fingers caressing the skin.

“Have you missed me?” Killean purred, his breath fanning her ear.

“Would you be hurt if I said no?” she challenged, turning to face him.

He held a hand over his heart and pretended as though he were in pain.

“I love this about you, Lila. You aren’t afraid to speak your mind, challenge people, me. You should be rewarded.”

Lila tilted her head to the side and appraised at him. “What kind of a reward?”

He chuckled and raised a hand to touch her chin, his thumb making slow, circular patterns. “So eager, love.”

His voice was low and sexy, and it made every nerve inside her come alive. She loved his endearment. It was sweet and very unlike him.

  “Dance with me,” he said.

He took her hand and led her to the center of the hall with the other dancers.

His hand rested in the small of her back just inches from her waist. It was distracting, and she knew he was doing it deliberately just to know he was affecting her. She had to fight the urge to sink her nails in his cervical vertebrae.

“You look lovely tonight,” he murmured into her ear. “You smell exquisite. Bottega?”

  “Yes, thank you,” she whispered.

She ran her hand down the lapel of his tux. Must be Armani, she mused. The man practically slept in suits.

They continued on the dance floor, Killean’s thumb making circular patterns on her bare skin. Maybe it was a bad idea that she’d come here in this dress. Her skin was already hypersensitive from his touch.

  “Your heart is beating.”

  “Isn’t that normal?” Lila grinned.

  “It’s beating too fast.”

“So is yours,” she pointed out.

“Glad we’re on the same page. You affect me just as much as I affect you.” He brought one hand up to tug at the tiny straps that held the damn thing together. “I love your dress. It looks easy to take off.”

He drew her closer, and she was astounded to find that he was aroused. He lowered his dark head and dropped a gentle kiss on the curve of her neck. Lila sighed with satisfaction and tilted her head to the side. Her body would always betray her when it came to him. His lips moved up her cheek. She held onto everything she had not to lose it and grab his face between her palms and kiss him senseless.

“I’ve been thinking about you since I last saw you,” he spoke.

“You mean you’ve been thinking about a certain part of me,” Lila corrected.

“You mean your sweet pussy?” he breathed blatantly.

Her breath hitched, and she glanced around to ensure no one heard that. Killean, on the other hand, knew no boundaries.

“You know how to drive a man to insanity, Lila, I’ll give you that. I ache to taste your mouth, your skin. The way you gave yourself to me is still fresh in my mind. I want to be inside you, but something is always happening.”

He said it so casually as though it were a line he used every day. That should have worried her and yet she was wet immediately, betraying her so called need for space. If he hadn’t held her the way he did her knees would have given out. Every filthy thing that came from his mouth thrilled her.

Before she could respond, Professor Langman approached. Lila pulled away from him instantly.

  “Mr. Knight,” he greeted.

Both men shook hands before Langman’s eyes averted to Lila incredulously.

“I had no idea you two were so familiar with each other,” he said.

“Yes, well, I’ve been trying to cajole Lila to join us at Knight Industries.”

  Langman smiled knowingly.

“I see. Well, enjoy your night. Lila.”

He nodded before disappearing through the crowd.

Killean didn’t stay with her long, as he was being approached by so many well-wishers. Though from across the room, she could feel his burning gaze on her.

“You friend is keeping close watch,” Aiden said from behind her.

“Hey.” She smiled. “Mr. Insistent over there can’t help himself.”

“I don’t trust him. He watches you as though you belong to him.”

Why did that make Aiden angry? It must be his concern for her as a friend and nothing else.

“Don’t worry about me. You won’t have to kick anyone’s ass for manhandling me.”

Lila was filled with so much gratitude for his loyalty. “Thanks for caring. Now go have fun with your date.”

He grinned. “She’s a keeper. I want to make sure we’re on the same page before I introduce you all.”

  “I understand, no pressure.”

She saw him off, and when she spun around to search for Langman, she was face to face with India.

“Why don’t you and Aiden just be together?” she asked.

  “What?”

  “Don’t play dumb with me.”

Lila glanced over her shoulder at Killean, begging him with her eyes to come save her. She really didn’t want to have this conversation with her sister.

“India, I’m not interested in Aiden.”

>   “Oh?”

  “Oh.”

“Maybe you never gave him the chance.”

“If a guy can only love you when you’re no longer an ugly duck, then he isn’t worth your time.”

“Aiden is not like that and you know it!”

“I feel I’m going to have this conversation until I turn a hundred. India, just because you were always in love with your best friend doesn’t mean everyone else is.”

India frowned and opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted.

  “Lila?”

Killean circled them to stand next to Lila with a possessive hand around her waist. India’s mouth dropped opened as she drank him in. Her dreamy smile made her look like a total loony as she stared up at him.

“Lila, care to fill me in?”

  “I’m Killean Knight, a friend of Lila’s.”

“Killean Knight, CEO of Knight Industries. I never knew you two were friends. Lila?” India turned her dark eyes questioningly on her sister. “I’m India, Lila’s older sister, and it’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Knight.”

  “Please, call me Killean.”

India smiled. “I think I like him already.”

A little smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Lila knew India wouldn’t like him that much if she’d heard his earlier demands.

“I’ll leave you two,” she said slyly, with a quick wink at Killean.

“Thank you for saving me,” Lila murmured.

“Yes, I was beginning to wonder the same thing too.”

  “What?”

“What your sister said. She likes me.”

Lila frowned. “Argh! I think I’m going to lose my mind tonight. First you, and then her, and now you again. I better go home!”

She made an effort to stride away, but he held onto her arm and gently tugged her back.

“I’m sorry if I’ve ruined your night, but I won’t lie and tell you otherwise.”

“Hmm, you don’t lie, especially when you want to fuck somebody.”

His smile was bittersweet. “No, I want to fuck you, not somebody else.”

  “You’ll be bored after.”

He gave a deep sigh. “I don’t recall my being bored the first time.”
