by Gemma Berlanti

Shrugging out of his jacket, he dropped it to the floor and removed his belt, winding it around his hand as he moved to the sleeping beauty.

  ***

An incubus had invaded Lila’s dream, pleasuring her in the worst way possible. It unleashed its tongue on the most sensitive part of her anatomy, pleasuring her with its tongue and mouth until she combusted and screamed out, arching up for more of the hedonistic pleasure.

  “Lila?”

Her body responded to the sound of his inherently sexy voice, and she forced her lazy lids open to see his face above hers.

“You don’t give up, do you?” she asked.

“Not when it comes to you. She was a friend, Lila.”

“No explanation, please. But you should give me a heads up so I know if you help all your lady friends out of their clothes. That means we’re also friends.”

“I knew you would assume that I—”

She placed her hand against his warm chest and pushed him away slightly.

“There isn’t much to assume when it comes to you.”

Lila swore in her mind. She was starting to sound like a clingy bitch. She scolded herself. Letting him know that he had hurt her wasn’t at the top of her priority. He ran his hands through his hair repeatedly, looking chastised and hurt.

“She is an annoying friend who sleeps over when she’s in town. Our relationship is platonic, like I told you. I don’t try to see the women I socialize with naked. Her timing was just all wrong when you called.”

“So you set boundaries and they break it?” Lila snapped.

“Lila, I’m trying here,” he said gruffly. “Give me the benefit of the doubt. And I am not the man you think I am.”

“Well, prove to me what kind of man you are!” she snapped. “Because my patience is about this thin.” She gestured with her thumb and index finger almost touching. “For some reason, I wanted you to be the man I gave myself to because you make me feel like…”

He inched closer, his eyes imploring her to continue. “Feel like what? Tell me.”

She sighed, forlorn. “It doesn’t matter because we wouldn’t work. I can’t be with someone like you. I don’t want to see you again, Killean.”

“Are you ashamed of me?” he asked.

The question took her off guard. “Why would you think that?”

He said nothing. “Then don’t shut me out, please,” he said.

There was something sad about him, that desolate look in his eyes, a longing that had nothing to do with sex. His words sung deep inside her, and she knew they had a deeper meaning. He seemed to be carrying a load on his shoulders, and she wanted to be the woman who could try and release him, share his burden.

“You won’t regret giving me a chance, Lila,” he muttered. “I won’t let you.”

“Sweet words spoken vehemently mean nothing if you’re not man enough to defend them, Killean.”

“You’re so young and so…I’m in awe of you, Lila.”

He gazed down at her with mixed emotions, his eyes holding hers captive, hypnotizing her. She let her guard down at that moment. Seeing his head lowering to her, she should have shifted out of his hold. Instead, she let him slip his hands down her hips possessively, caressing every inch of her skin as his mouth covered hers. She moved her hands up his abdomen, feeling his abs rippling beneath her touch, sending a tremor through his body.

“I’m hungry for you,” he whispered.

He trailed a wet line of kisses against her cheek to the curve of her neck, biting her earlobe and sucking her skin. She tilted her head to the side to give him greater access. Lila wanted him to make love to her the right and proper way, needed to feel him, all of him, not just one part of him.

Her fingers raked through his hair, and he moaned in the curve of her neck. He dipped his head and tugged a nipple into his mouth, between his teeth. Capturing the other breast, he rolled it in his palm, kneading and squeezing, getting it tender and the nipple taut.

  “Ah!”

Her toes curled when he nipped the tight bud. She arched further so he could taste the other breast, throwing her head back in wanton rapture. He bared his teeth and raked down the length of her nipple, elongating it further.

He sucked on her lower lip as he glided his hands over her heated skin until he found the place he alone could make weak. He continued the sweet gentle exploration of her mouth with his skilled tongue as he parted her slick swollen folds with his thumb, searching for her heat.

Her desire soared as she worshiped his masculinity with her eyes. Michelangelo’s David had nothing on him. The desire in his eyes mirrored hers.

“Spread those pretty lips,” he whispered against her mouth.

The idea of her being spread apart, bared to him, was such a hot turn on. Lila reached down with both hands and spread her lips apart.

“So soft,” he murmured, and he slipped his thumb inside of her, sliding it ever so gently in and out, exerting pressure as he moved it back in. The opening of her sex quivered around him. She moaned and raised her legs over his shoulders shamelessly so he could have her.

  “Killean—”

  “Shh. Keep spreading them.”

His mouth slanted over hers possessively, demanding and searching and taking and giving pleasure. Lila grew breathless as his ardent kisses swallowed every moan. She would lose her mind if he didn’t make her come soon. She grinded her hips into his hand without shame.

  “Just feel. Take my offering.”

The sexual haze she was engulfed in at that moment chased all rational sense she had left to the wind.

Killean rocked back onto his heels, and she had a good view of his hard ripped chest as he slid off the bed. His dark hair was wild, as though it had been thoroughly tugged. The sight was so hot. Everything about him was wickedly erotic.

“You can’t keep fucking me every time you do something wrong,” she rasped as his scorching gaze moved over her body.

“This is the only way you’ll know I’m sorry. I’m a fucked-up son of a bitch, Lila, literally. I don’t know anything about relationships, but I’m willing to learn. Just do one thing: every time I mess up, shut me out.”

Lila was stunned by his words. Shut him out?

He reached down to pull his fly, and her anticipation sparked. There was a huge bulge straining the fabric of his slacks. Her eyes followed the beautiful tiny dark hairs that started from below his navel downward. He pulled down his pants—he wore no underwear. His erection literally jumped free. Her tongue licked across her lower lips as he ripped a foil packet and sheathed himself, his eyes holding hers.

He crawled forward, large and ominously powerful. He was pure masculine perfection, everything a woman could ask for or dream of. Lila’s throat went dry. The slick wide head was purple and engorged, wet with his excitement, with thick veins pulsating beneath the hot velvet skin.

Her mouth gathered saliva as she ached for a taste.

He gripped himself, jacking the length.

“Like what you see, baby?” he asked, his voice husky and laced with dark desires.

His warmth blanketed her once more, and he lifted her wrists above her head, binding them with his leather belt so that the leather bit into her skin. She was bound and at his mercy. Lila arched her hips, begging him to take her. A salacious smile spread across his lips. Lifting one of her legs, he nipped her toe and she bucked off the bed, feeling the sensation between her thighs. He bit another and then another, endlessly until she was coming. Killean grasped her hips to align her with his cock, sliding her onto the length until he was buried to the balls. With each delicious glide, her cunt spasmed around him.

“You’re so wet for me, and so swollen.”

He pressed the calloused pad of his thumb down hard on her clitoris. Lila moaned and rolled her hips. He inserted a finger inside, moving it in a circular motion while his thumb exerted more pressure on her clit.

  “Please…” she begged.

  Killean moved dee
per and caught a handful of her hair, arching her head back so he could feast on her throat. His groans were shaky and guttural, and his expression betrayed his restraint. It dawned on her that he didn’t want to hurt her. At that moment, Lila’s heart swelled in her chest and painfully so, because through all this sexual madness he was thinking of her feelings when he could just fuck her brains out and come.

She smiled, showing her gratitude, and he returned it, although faint.

He grabbed her ass cheeks and drove into her as if his existence depended on this. They moaned simultaneously, Killean from the depths and tightness of her around him, and Lila from the exquisite fullness. The room was filled with slurping sounds of bodies joining together and Lila’s endless fuck me harder please groans.

His big balls slapped against her ass as his plunges became fiercer, igniting a fire inside her. The muscles inside her body locked tight around his dick, then spasmed as his ass flexed.

She held his dark hooded eyes. She swore she saw pain, disbelief, and other mixed emotions as he brought them to their precipice. He buried his face in the curve of her neck, and she knew instantly that he knew what she had seen in those irresistible eyes.

Lila could feel that impending orgasm as he rotated his hips and the head of his cock touched her sweet spot. Her hips arched off the bed to meet his thrusts.

  “Yes!”

Killean groaned as she held him like a fist, and they came apart together, Killean filling her with his love juices. Their bodies were slick with sweat and their breaths ragged. He reached below where their bodies were joined and pinched her clit, sending her body into a series of convulsions. She swore she saw stars and faraway galaxies.

He released her bound wrists as soon as he regained his breath, pulling her body flush on top of him in post-coital bliss.

  “Lila—” he began.

She placed her finger over his lips.

  “I understand,” she whispered.

His hand glided down to her ass, and he caressed the smooth skin. His eyes twinkled in the dark as he stared at her, a frown marring his brows.

“I know I’m pushy and impulsive. It’s part of who I am. I guess I should have—”

Her words were cut mid-sentence when he kissed her.

“I suffer from parasomnia and bipolar mood disorder, Lila. I take pills to keep my madness in check. You were the only woman I’ve ever fallen asleep with so recklessly. It was my mistake, not yours.”

He averted his gaze from her and stared at the ceiling, his body suddenly tense.

“It’s quite all right if you say you don’t want to see me anymore because I won’t give up that easily.”

“Killean, why would I want to leave you over something that isn’t your fault? I wasn’t mad because you refused to tell. I was mad because of the way you acted like what we did disgusted you.”

  He sighed. “I know.”

“You’re not mad, and I honestly love you this way. Your intimidation turns me on, and I like it when you’re rough. So I guess I’m mad too.”

He brushed his lips across her forehead. “How’s your paper?”

She stared at him for a long time and realized this was his coping method. He also had a fear of being abandoned.

“I just started the first draft,” she said.

“Would you like to use your boyfriend as a participant?”

  Lila chuckled. “Boyfriend?”

  He groaned. “Lila—”

“You’re adorable when you’re caught red-handed. Who says you are my boyfriend, anyway?” she teased.

  He swallowed. “Bedroom buddy?”

“I think I like boyfriend best.”

“Lila, we never really talked about the club incident,” he said.

“No, we didn’t. I don’t mind being tied up, spanked, or disciplined in bed, but that doesn’t mean I’ll bend to your will outside of the bedroom.”

“You don’t have one submissive bone in your body.” Killean chuckled. “Except when we are in bed. I’m finding it hard bending you to my will.”

She pinched his nipple hard, and he growled. “Woman! You’ll pay for that later.”

Her eyes cast down on his tattoo, and she traced the lines.

“Why an owl? Why not something like a vicious fire-breathing monster?”

“Dragons were never my thing, too violent and vicious. The owl and I have a lot in common. We’re both isolated creatures.”

His comparison with the reclusive creature resonated with the little she already knew about him. At first glance, no one would ever compare Killean with an owl, but now that she had seen parts of him he didn’t show the world, she couldn’t agree more. She wanted to know more, but his lips were sealed. It was quiet for awhile.

  “An owl does suit you.”

“Lila, if at any moment you feel as though you’re suffocating, don’t hesitate to tell me.”

Her heart jumped against her chest.

  “Killean—?”

“You heard me,” he said. “Let’s not search for any deeper meaning.”

She opened her mouth to ask, but his jaw was set and he had that defiant look in his eyes.

“Killean, just know that I’m not going anywhere, so you can talk to me whenever you feel comfortable.”

  He didn’t respond.

  “Killean?”

  “Hmm?”

  “Please stay the night.”

  “I intend to.”

  CHAPTER

  FOURTEEN

Lila was heading to the library when a delivery man with a bouquet of carnations and roses waltzed in.

  “Miss Lila Montgomery?”

  “That’s me.”

  “Sign here please, ma’am.”

  “Okay.”

“Roses and carnations?” Langman asked as she sighed and collected her gift.

“It’s from my boyfriend,” she told him, shaking her head at Killean’s flower fetish.

“I don’t mean to pry, but is it Aiden?”

“Aiden?” Lila asked with a smile. “No, he’s still my best friend.”

He took off his glasses and smiled. “Then who?”

Lila looked away from him slyly. Why was she being shy about her love life? Killean would be disappointed if he found out that she was keeping him a secret.

“Actually, you know him,” Lila murmured. “He went here.”

  “Oh?”

  “It’s Killean Knight.”

Langman was shocked. “You mean Mr. Knight?”

  She nodded.

“Oh, I had no idea you were…” He cleared his throat.

  “No one here does.”

Langman removed his glasses and sighed.

“Listen, Lila, don’t think I’m being nosey, but I think of you as a daughter. He’s a great businessman with lots of talent. But he has a reputation for being a sort of womanizer.”

Lila nodded. “I can handle him, sir.”

Langman nodded before he left the room. She placed the flowers in a vase with water on the table. That’s why Lila didn’t read gossip columns; they published fiction half the time. It had been three weeks straight since they were officially a couple. They’d already been on the couples date with India and Ian, Aiden and Bianca. India had called both their relationships the honeymoon phase because the real trouble hadn’t started yet.

“Hey, Lila, your boyfriend stopped by today,” Mitchella, the librarian, gushed, fanning herself dramatically. “He’s hot stuff! Whew! How do you handle that at night?”

  “He came here?” Lila inquired.

“Yeah, with the dean. They’re good friends, I hear. He was very polite.”

Lila’s eyebrow rose. “I’m sorry, did you say polite? When he wants to charm your pants off! Okay, I gotta browse through some references.”

Lila left the desk for the business section. She was on the third shelf when someone shadowed her. She spun to see a man smiling at her.

  “Excuse me, I don’t mean t
o bother you, but I was wondering if you could help me find a book? You seem to know the place well.”

“Oh, I don’t work in here. You should ask the librarian, Mitchella. She knows the place like a book, no pun intended.”

He laughed. “Mitchella is taken up at the moment. That’s why I asked you.”

Mitchella was busy with a dean of the department.

“Okay, sure, what can I help you with?”

“It’s a business book. I read it at Harvard. It was the most interesting business book I’ve ever read, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. If I saw it, I would remember it. The name, I don’t quite remember.”

  “Odd.”

Lila would have thought someone would remember the name of the most interesting book they’d ever read. Take her sister, for instance. Her favorite literature work was Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. She was a huge fan of erotic literature. As she searched the shelf with him, a thought came to mind.

“Was it Business Ethics in Today’s Age of Business?”

His blue eyes lit up. “Yes, that’s it! I must look so stupid now.”

“No. There’s the older version and the revised version. You’d be happy with both. I read the books too.”

  “But how did you guess?”

“You don’t look like you’d be putting yourself through this much worry for fiction.”

He laughed. “Are you a business student here?”

“Yeah, I did a minor in business.”

  “I’m Russell Wesley.”

  “Lila Montgomery.”

  They shook hands.

“I’ve to go back to work.” She pulled the book Langman wanted out of the slot.

  “You work here?” he asked.

  “Yes.”

“So I will see you again?” He sounded so hopeful and his grin widened as his eyes twinkled.

“I don’t think so. Enjoy your book, Mr. Wesley.”

  ***

The moment Lila saw Killean’s face, she knew something was wrong. Killean was outside the campus waiting. Picking her up had become a part of his daily routine. As she approached, however, she saw the swift change in his mood. With a quick nod, he held the door open. She wondered if this was one of his mood swings.
