“Sit down and don’t try anything funny or I’ll blow your brains out. Empty your purse.”

  “Why?”

He smiled and pulled off his mask. “Because I want your phone and any sharp tools you have on your person.”

Lila tossed her purse at his feet instead. He sneered and picked it up. Lila considered attacking him, but it wouldn’t be the right moment. She had to get him relaxed first. As she sat there, she considered all the possible ways she could take him down. But then she remembered that he was the one with the power. She had to tread lightly to erase all possibility of bodily harm. Idly she wondered if he wasn’t going to bind her ankles and wrists.

“Why are you doing this?” she asked finally. Though Lila wasn’t one to sympathize with criminals, she thought he deserved to share his side.

“Why ask when you already know?”

“And what exactly do you plan to do with me?”

That smile came again. “He took the one thing that mattered then in my life. Killean is going to see what it feels like when I take you.”

“Take me?” she asked, confused, then her eyes widened as it sank in, and her stomach felt sick.

“You’re looking at me funny,” he said. “This would mean we’re even. I’ve been thinking what it would be like to take something precious away from Killean. Then I couldn’t think of anything he wanted in this world except money. I had no idea how to take his wealth, but then I remembered you.

“I’ve seen you in the papers together. And I was shocked because as soon as Killean shoves his cock into a woman, he’s done with them, like he did with Marisa. But I waited and I saw that you meant more than the others. And I’ve been watching you too, Lila. I always knew Knight liked them curvy and sweet. He always had a taste for dark meat and brunettes. But seeing you in that lace dress made my blood boil.”

“You’re disgusting. No wonder Marisa cheated on you.”

Lila didn’t expect it. The blow came so quick with a swift rise of his hand against her face. She ended up on the floor, holding her throbbing cheek bone as he hovered over her with wild blazing eyes filled with so much loathing and hate for one man.

“How about I end it now and just skip town?” he decided. “You have such beautiful skin, Lila. Tell me, does Knight kiss every inch? Because I would love to.”

He knelt on one knee and used the tip of the gun to move the hem of her skirt up her thigh inch by inch until he reached his destination.

“Ah, how ripe. Killean has good taste. You are such a beautiful woman. How sweet you must be.”

His eyes gleamed with carnal want, and Lila held her breath. If he touched her, she would just shut her body down. She would not feel him.

He moved the tip of the weapon along her exposed thigh and ran the tip against the apex, then against her clit. She regretted wearing the scrap of lace she called underwear at that moment. Lila felt sick. He laughed at her reaction. The thought of another man touching her like that was revolting. Lila shifted on impulse. Suddenly he stood and she could breathe again. She pushed her dress down to cover herself quite hysterically.

“Don’t get excited. I’m not through with you yet, missy.”

He went across the room to pour himself a drink. He had about two shots and then slid the glass window open so the cool night air rushed in, blowing the drapes.

Lila glanced around the room again. How had he managed to even stay here? He had lost his company. She wondered if they knew what he was out there doing.

“So entertain me. How did he win you over? Are you a gold-digger?”

  “Fuck you!”

He laughed. “And you will soon.”

  She clutched her throat.

“Or was it his big cock, as Marisa said?”

“You have so much resentment,” she spat. “Why don’t you just blow your brains out?”

“How about I just go back where the party is and blow his brains out? No, that would be too easy. I want him to suffer.”

“That’s your master plan? Come here, hurt me, and skip town? How far do you think you will get?”

How could this deluded madman not see the flaw in his plan?

“Very far, I imagine. He messed with me. He has to pay…or you will, in this case. Do you love him?”

  “Yes.”

He moved toward her and dragged her up, dropped her on the sofa.

“You women are such crazy asses when it comes to Knight. You act as though he’s some kind of god,” Russell rattled on.

Lila didn’t like him being this close to her. His alcoholic breath fanned her face, and the more she tried to lean away, the closer he would come. This was pointless.

“Why do you dislike him so much?”

He smiled cynically. “Who said I disliked him? What I feel for Knight is more than hate.”

  Lila wasn’t shocked by this.

Then she saw him leaning in, and he grabbed her by the arms and fastened his mouth to hers. It was bruising, and she groaned in both discomfort and disgust. He dragged her up from the couch and thrust her against the wall. He moved so that she was pinned, and he shoved his tongue into her mouth again. She tried to push him off, but it was no use. She felt sick to her stomach.

Suddenly he was gone. She heard a loud crash and glass shattering. Lila saw Killean looming over him, a bottle of expensive bourbon in his grip with a touch of blood. She was too shocked to move, glued to the wall, her legs shaky. She looked down at the man who’d had his mouth over hers a minute ago slouched against what was left of the table and a large crystalline flower vase.

  “Love?”

Killean was pulling Lila into his arms, and she buried her face in his chest and wept.

  “Shh, it’s okay now, baby.”

Lila lifted her head to rest her chin on his shoulder, and that was when she saw him standing on wobbly legs, aiming the gun at Killean’s back, blood running down his forehead.

  “Killean!”

Before he could turn, a shot fired, and Lila screamed as blood gushed out of the tiny hole in his chest. Another one was fired, and this time she didn’t see where, hysteria taking over. Lila couldn’t hear anything for a moment, just see. And Lila watched frozen as the man she loved lunged for his enemy, and then Russell’s cry as he disappeared through the open window. Her knees gave out, and she fell into the couch.

  “Miss Montgomery?”

She glanced up into Michael’s face.

  “Love?”

Killean lifted her out of the couch. “Come, let me take you downstairs, away from this mess.”

  ***

The flashing lights of police vehicles were blinding, and they made Lila’s head ache even worse. Killean held her close, and she watched as they lifted Russell off the top of somebody’s limo. He’d fallen out the window and landed on top of the vehicle. Luckily he wasn’t dead or that would have been another story. She was shaken, but she managed to stand on her feet. Lila felt better now that the bastard was going away. The threat had been eliminated. Killean moved toward the ambulance doors, but he never let go of Lila’s hand.

He held up his hand to the paramedic, who nodded and left him. He released her hand and moved closer to the gurney that Wesley was lying on.

“Good things happen to people who wait, Wesley,” Lila heard Killean murmuring. His voice took on a mysterious husky edge that she had never heard before. “You came after me and my girlfriend and my family. Now I’m going to decimate everything you’ve built and sell it to the highest bidder. And the best part is you’ll be alive to see it all. That’s my revenge on you.”

She looked down at the man lying half-conscious. He grunted, and she thought that was his way of saying he understood everything that Killean had said. The paramedic returned and lifted him inside the ambulance. Lila watched as the vehicle pulled away and let out a shaky breath. Killean looked down at her and drew her into his arms.

“I’ll take you home, now, love. Too much has happened tonight.”
/>   He held her face between his hands and kissed her swollen cheekbone.

  “The police?” she whispered.

“Can wait,” he said firmly. “You need to get some rest.”

“Please.” She nodded. “I’ll just talk to them. It’s fine. The sooner the better.”

He nodded reluctantly. “Come, let’s get this over with.”

  CHAPTER

  TWENTY-SIX

Lila woke up against something warm that smelled gloriously delicious. She purred and stretched. Her body felt oddly flexible, yet slightly sore. She opened her eyes to a bright morning light streaming in through the curtains. Killean’s arm was around her possessively. She glanced up at him, and he was still asleep. His face was smooth, young, and carefree. Reaching out, she ran her fingers down the side of his jaw, then his lower lip. She continued on the path down his stomach and felt it rippling under her touch.

“Yes,” she heard him say on a seductive sigh. She was shocked that she drew herself up on her elbow and stared at him. The movement woke him, and he stared up at her.

“What’s wrong?” he asked frantically. “Are you in pain?”

Lila shook her head with a laugh. “You talked in your sleep.”

For a moment, he looked worried. “What did I say?”

  “Yes.” She grinned.

He raised a dark, thick eyebrow.

“What time is it?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” she breathed, falling into his arms, breathing in his scent.

He shifted so that she was beneath him. She threaded her fingers through his hair, and he locked their lips.

“Oh, insatiable as ever, Mr. Knight.”

“I love your delectable mouth, Miss Montgomery. But I haven’t tested its full potential.”

  “You’re crude.”

“Depends on my plan,” he murmured.

  “I’m officially terrified.”

His lips danced over hers. “Don’t worry, baby, your Big Bad Knight will protect you,” he whispered earnestly.

  And didn’t she know it.

His warm hands moved down her body, slowly leaving fire in its wake. Lila sighed, needing more. He weaved their fingers together, raising them above her head, restraining her, his hard strong body pressing her into the mattress. She love the way he made her totally helpless and made it so sexy.

His lips moved slowly up the side of her jaw, then running the tip of his tongue in the seam of her lips. She opened her mouth on a breathy sigh, and he thrust his tongue into her mouth for a drugging kiss.

He let her up for air, and then his face darkened with fury.

“That fucker hit you,” he growled. “What else did he do to you, Lila? Why won’t you tell me? The fucking swelling is still visible to my eye.”

Lila contemplated telling him, but it would only make him madder. She fidgeted with his Adam’s apple. It had been two days since the incident, and she wasn’t ready to speak of it.

  “That’s not important now, Killean.”

  “Did he touch you, Lila?”

“It doesn’t matter now. He’s gone.”

  “Tell me!”

“He said he was going to take me,” she whispered, avoiding his eyes.

She heard his harsh intake of breath.

“That motherfucker! I am going to destroy him. He’s going to wish he were dead.”

She told him everything just to avoid having to bring the topic up for discussion again. Killean cursed a line of expletives. She sighed and dragged him down to meet her lips. That was the only way she could reassure him. Killean groaned, but he didn’t pull away. After everything that had happened, she needed him. She needed his fervent kisses to take away the memory of Russell’s mouth on hers.

“You should have told me this last night, Lila. I would have broken his knee cap with my fist this time. The thought of another man having you, putting his cock into you, his tongue in your mouth, his hands on your beautiful body gets me fucking mad, so mad that my palm twitches to smack him down. When I opened the door and saw him with his tongue down your throat…”

“He didn’t have it down my throat,” she clarified. “And don’t say it like that. Hearing it makes my skin crawl.”

She ran her index finger down his lips, and he caught it between his teeth and sucked hard.

“You still didn’t tell me how you found me,” she murmured.

He dropped a line of kisses down the side of her jaw.

  “Killean?”

“You aren’t going to like this,” he murmured guiltily.

  She arched an eyebrow.

“I put a tracking device in your phone,” he said. “I needed to be aware of your location since that maniac was out on the loose.”

  “Oh.”

He arched his head back to look at her, confused. “Just oh?”

“What were you expecting? A tantrum?”

“Yes, because you’re a tantrum queen.”

  “I don’t have a temper!”

  “Yes, you do.”

“Well, if I have a temper, you’re a domineering, autocratic, control freak.”

He laughed in the curve of her neck. “Is that what you found so attractive about me?”

“No, it was your magnetism and perhaps the way you looked.”

“I’m obscenely rich and you only want me for the way I look and for my magnetism.”

“I would want you if you lost it all tomorrow.”

“You don’t say.” The humor in his voice deflated, and he stared at her with an almost forlorn expression.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” The expression on his face had her worried. “Killean, what’s wrong? Was it something I said?”

“No, you say the right things, genuine things.”

“Then why do you look so worried?”

“Because I realized that I could’ve lost you, Lila. It doesn’t bring me warmth. I went to an unthinkable place that night when I realized he had you.”

She would soon tell him that wasn’t the only one he would worry about. The heat had died down, and Marisa was fully recovering. Russell was in the hell he deserved; Jasmine was back where she belonged in rehab right here in New York so Killean could keep track of her recovery. And Killean…well, he was going to get one hell of a surprise from Lila soon. He’d told her he loved her. Not in words, yet she knew. And she was also positive that once she told him the surprise, he would be just as doting as he was to her. She couldn’t see it any other way.

“Well, I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere.”

“I wouldn’t let you go even if you wanted to leave.”

“Now that’s a hostage situation.” She grinned to lighten the mood.

“I can’t ever think of letting you go. Just the thought alone wounds me. At first I thought it was just selfishness, typical male ego, but it struck me in a way that affected here.”

He lifted her hand and placed it over his heart. And she understood. He found it hard to say the words, to explain his feelings, but he didn’t need words to tell her anything; his eyes were the window to his soul. His beating heart grew faster against her hand to match hers.

“I just thought you would be out the door when you finally knew all the parts of me I hid,” he continued in that low voice. “That’s why I needed you to just be happy with what you saw on the surface, the façade. I thought you’d just be happy with that. And then you started to know me, and I was shocked that you were touching the parts of me that I had thought to be dormant. I was worried.

“And then I saw you last night and I knew I couldn’t waste any more time to tell you how much I love you. My heart sank when it came to me that the bastard must have found you. I’d never felt that way in my life. My heart hurt in that moment. It was Michael who reminded me that he’d put a device in your mobile, and I came for you. Saw him with his tongue down your throat, you fighting.”

“It was disgusting, his plan. To do to me what he thinks you did to Marisa.
He said a lot of things.”

“Things that were probably true,” Killean muttered, not happy with this. “There are things I haven’t told you but I will.”

“Well, I would beg to differ. I wasn’t discarded the moment you shoved your cock into me, so I would say we have a winner. He doesn’t know you, Killean. He only knows the bad parts, not the soft gentle parts that I discovered. The parts about you that make me love you too.”

His green eyes burned into hers, suddenly brilliant and scorching. He was looking at her as though he had just discovered the essence of life, and it made her chest tighten.

“The things you do to me,” he said gruffly.

Her fingers ripped at the buttons on his shirt, hard enough to tear the fabric. He caught her wrists, but she tugged free and pushed the shirt over his shoulders. Heat rose in his veins, and his cock hardened against her. He grabbed at the delicate lace fabric to get it out of the way so he could touch her skin.

“You have very beautiful skin, Lila. One of these days I’m going to kiss and suck every inch of it,” he murmured darkly as he bit the soft flesh of her abdomen.

He spread her thighs far apart so she was exposed. Her pussy was wet and swollen. Pretty and sweet. He ached to eat her. His mouth found her weakness, and she was like putty under him as his tongue pleasured her. Slender fingers laced through his hair, pulling him off, but he continued, running his tongue deftly over her soft, slick, swollen parted folds.

He rimmed her opening with the tip of his tongue and swirled it around the sensitive muscles. He spread the lips apart with his thumbs and licked her up slowly, then tongued it down roughly. Lila rolled her hips, and for a brief second her thighs closed around his head before they fell limply apart.

He wasn’t gentle now. He was ferocious as he pleasured her, taking his pleasure from hers. She arched her hips off the bed into his mouth, urging him on. The sight of his dark head between her thighs made her want it even harder.

“Yes, please, yes, like that…please.” She began to sob, and then it turned into a full outburst, and her body shuddered violently.
