  “Morning,Alex.Hereforanewbook?”Mr.White,thejollyoldmanwho ownedthelocalbookstore,said.

  “That’sright.Gotanythingnewin?”Alexasked.

  “Foryou,afraidnot.Still,mightbesomethingontheshelvesyouhaven’t read.”

  Fatchanceofthat.Alexwassurehe’dalreadyreadeveryfantasybookthat hadeverbeenwritten.Afterall,hewasafantasyobsessive.

  Itdidn’tmatterhowheabsorbedthemedium,headoreditineveryshapeand form.Books,televisionshows,movies,videogames;hewasafantasyfan throughandthrough.Didn’tmatterifitwasseriesspanningepics,swordand sorcerystyleadventures,ormonsterfilledcomingofagestorieswithsinister twistsateveryturn.Alexwasaguywholovedfantasy.

  “I’lltakealook.Hopefully,I’llfindsomething,”Alexsaid.“I’mitchingfor anewread.”

  Alexmadehiswaytothesectionheknewbyheartandscannedthroughthe selection,hopingtofindsomethinghehadn’tseenbefore.Anewadventurefor himtolosehimselfin.

  Thosewerethebestbooksofall,theonessocompellingyouactuallyfelt

  pulledintothestory.

  Somestoriesevenhadthatasthetheme.Theheroinebeingpulledintoa strange,fantasy,world,wheretheydidn’tbelong.Usuallycastintheroleof someheroofdestiny,whovanquishesthebigbadandalwaysgetsthegirl.

  Alexhadalwaysdreamedofbeingoneoftheheroesinthosestories.He lovedfantasythatmuch.But,heknewadreamwasasfarasitgot.Itdidn’t matterhowmuchAlexlovedfantasy,itwasn’treal.

  Itwascalledfantasyforareason.

  Noneoftheworldshereadaboutexisted.Dofonys,Irrather,andSliberynn, wereallfigmentsofauthor’simaginations.Amillionotherworldsthesame.

  Noneofthemactuallyexistedbeyondthepagesofhisstories,orasmovies featuringactorsheknewwereplayingparts.

  Fantasywasn’treal,despitehowmuchhewantedittobe.

  Alexwasn’tjustdeniedhisdreams.Hewasdeniedanewread.Heowned everybookontheshelfalready.Therewasnothingnewthatinterestedhim.

  Itwasgettingharder,andharder,tofindnewmaterial.

  Asiffateheardhiscomplaints,somethingtumbledfromthehighestshelf andclatteredAlexonthehead.

  “Ouch!”hewhined,rubbingthesoreness.“Whatthehellwasthat?”

  Sittingonthefloorwasaheavy,leather-clad,book.Itlookedwornandwas coatedwithathicklayerofdust.It’dbeenhiddenawayforalongtime.

  Therewasnotitleonthefront.Nowordsatall.Itscoverwasadornedwitha symbolunknowntoAlex.Onethatlookedlikeacrestbelongingtosomenoble familyfromthetaleshe
likedtoread.

  Alexdidn’tknowwhy,buthewasdrawntothebook.Hesensedagreat adventurewaitingforhimbetweenthepages.

  Hedroppeditdownonthebookstorecounter.“Howmuchforthisone?I

  can’tfindalabelonit.”

  “I’veneverseenthatbookbefore,”Mr.Whitesaid.“Isitevenoneofmine?

  Justtakeit,Alex.You’vebeensuchagoodcustomertome.Idon’tmindyou keepingit.”

  “Really?Thanks,Mr.White.Youjustmademyday!”

  Alexwasn’tsugarcoating,orexaggerating,hisexcitement.Hecradledthe bookandrushedhome,eagertogetreading.

  Assoonashearrivedback,heopenedthebookandimmersedhimselfinthe world.

  Literally.

  Chapter2

  Alexawokeandsawaperfectblueskylookingbackathim.

  Hedidn’tknowhe’dfallenasleep.Thelastthingherememberedwas openinghisnewbook.Afterthat,everythingwasblack.Hismemorywasgone.

  Hedidn’tremembergoingoutside,ortakinganap.

  Alexliftedhisheadfromthefloorandwincedasitthrobbed.Amigraine madehimgroan.

  “Ouch.Whatthehell?”hecomplained,lookingaround.Whereheshould haveseenacouch,aTV,androwsoffigurineshe’dspentgreatcarepaintingso theyfithishighstandards,hesawaspanningwilderness.

  Grassflowedpleasantlyinthewindaroundhim,andtreesrustledfromthe verysamebreeze.Thesoundofbirdschirpingmixedinwiththetranquilsong, andaconcealedstreamrumblednottoofaraway.

  Ifhe’dwanderedoutside,he’dgoneabitfurtherthanthecurb.

  “AmIdreaming?”Alexaskedhimself.Hehadtobe.Itwastheonlywayto explainhowhe’dbeendumpedinthemiddleofaforest.That,oraseriouscase ofsleepwalking.

  Sleepwalkingdidn’texplainthevoicethatwasdictatinghiswords.Itwasn’t his.Itwasfartoodelicate.Feminine.

  Agirl’svoice.

  “What’sgoingonhere?”hesaid,checkinghisvoice.Definitelynothis.

  Soundedlikeasiren.Andnotthebeepingkind.

  Thevoicewasn’ttheonlyunusualthing.Strandsofunkempthairdangled downandpartiallyobscuredAlex’svision.Hishairwasn’ttheshortest,butit

  wasn’tthatlong.Anditwasadirtybrown.Thelocksforcinghisfingersinto actionwereblonde.

  Hedidn’tgettimetothinkabouttheoddities.Asounddisturbedhim.A rustleinthebushes.

  Alexgrewhyperalert.Hisimaginationranwild.Wasitsomesortofsix-headedhellbeast?Agold-hoardingdragonking?Asnake-facedcentaurhunter?

  “Hello?”hisfartoodelicatevoicesaid.“Isanybodythere?”

  Noanswer,justanotherrustle.Whatsortofmonsterwasit?Wasitachance encounterwiththedemonking?!

  Ofcoursenot.Itwasacute,furry,whiterabbit.

  Alexsighedinrelief.He’dworriedhimselffornoreason.Heknewthe creatureshepictureddidn’texist.

  Thebunnydartedoff,andapackofferalwolvesleapedfromthebush.They definitelydidexist,andtheireyesturnedawayfromtheiroriginaltargetand overtotheirnewprey.

  Him.

  “Nicedoggies,”hesaid,slowlymakinghisretreat.Nosuddenmovements.

  Hedidn’twanttospookthem.

  Itmadenodifference.Theirmindwasmadeup.Theybaredtheirfangsand pouncedtowardshim.

  Alexmadethewisedecisiontogetthehelloutofthere.

  Hewasneverasportyguy.Thelasttimehe’ddoneanyseriousexercisewas afewyearspriorwhenhestillattendedschool.Eventhenhedideverythinghe couldtoclaimhewassick.Afakenotefromthedoctorwasapowerfulweapon.

  Itwasamazinghoweasilyonecouldbemotivatedtorunwhentheyhada packofwolvessnappingattheirheels.

  Alexranasfastashisfeetcouldtakehim,jumpingoverrootsthatjutted

  fromthefloor,hurdlingrockswhichaimedtosprainhisankles.Hissocksand shoesweremissing,andthegroundmadehissolesache.Itdidn’tstophim.It couldn’tstophim.Ifanyoftheobstaclesclaimedhim,itwasgameover.They’d claimamightyassistforawolf’skillingblow.

  Itwasn’tjustnaturewhichtriedtostophim.Hisremainingclothingwished togetinontheact.Hispantstriedtoretreatdownhislegsandabandonedhis waistline.Hehadtousehishandstopullthemup.Itwastheonlythinghecould dotostophimselffromtrippingoverthedanglinglegs.

  Hisshirtfelttootight,andhisfronttooheavy.Itwashardtobreathe,and hardtomovequickly,whensomethingkeptswingingaround.Whatitwas,he didn’tknow.Hedidn’tdarelook.Doingsowouldslowhimdownandturnhim intowolfchow.

  Alex’seyesremainedahead,onthepath,lookingforawayout.

  Eventhoughheranfasterthanheknewhecould,thewolvesdidn’tstop chasing.Theyremainedrightbehind,readytopounceassoonasAlexstumbled.

  Hewasdeterminednottodoso.Heknewdoingsowouldbetheendofhim.

  Alexracedthroughafoliagewallandemergedfromtheforestandintoa clearing.Itwasn’tgoodnews.Thepathcametoastopasitturnedintoawide stream.Itwasn’tparticularlystrong,butAlexcouldn’tswim,andtherewasno convenientbridgewaitinginfrontofhim.

  NowayoverforAlex.Hehadtogoaround.

  Beforehecouldmakeadecisiontotakeoffdownthebank,thewolveshad himsurrounded.Andtheylookedextrahungryafterhavingtochasetheirmeal down.

  Alexwasn’tdeluded.Heknewwhatthismeant.Gameover.

  Unlikeinhisvideogames,hecouldn’tresetandgoagain.Forhim,game overmeantlifeover.

  “Please,don’tdothis,”hebegged,notwantingtodie.Hestillhadsomuch tolivefor.ThesequeltoTheIronNexuswascomingoutinWinter.Hedidn’t wanttomissit.“Please.Anyone.Anything.Saveme.”

  Thewolvesweren’tmovedbyhispleas.Theypouncedathim.

  Alexdroppeddown,coveredhishead,andsquealedinterror.

  However,theenddidnotarrive.

  RatherthansinkingtheirfangsintoAlex’sbody,thewolveswhimperedas theirassaultwasputtoaswift,decisive,end.

  Unabletocomprehendthelackofagonyracingthroughhim,Alexremained withhisheadburiedtothefloor,untilavoiceshockedhim.

  “Don’tworry,love.You’resafenow.Igot‘em.”

  IttookAlexamomenttorealizethatthevoicewastalkingtohim.His prayershadbeenanswered.Helookedupandfoundthatthewolveshadbeen takencareof.They’dbeenreducedintoclumpsofred,thesameformthey intendedforhim.

  Whatstoodintheirplacewasahugetowerofamanwhocastashadow acrossAlex,andeverythinginhisvicinity.

  Hewasaroundseven-foottall,andhisstockyframewasbulgingwith massivemuscles,makinghimappearevenbigger.Hisarmswereasthickastree trunks,hislegsnothinner,andhisstomachwaschiseledwithaneight-pack.

  That’sright.Notasix-pack.Aneight-pack.

  Alexcouldn’tevengetpastaone-pack.

  ThemysterymandidnothingtohidehisHerculeanbody.Hedidn’twear anythingapartfromsomeleatherstraps,thathelookedreadytoburstoutof,and afurloincloththatputallitseffortintohidingonemusclealone.

  Hisskinwasbakedtobronzefromalifeoutside,andhisskinwasscarred throughbattle.Bloodsplattersdrippedoverhismusclesashehandedagiant

  battleaxewithonehand.Itwasalmostasbigashewasandwasbeing manhandled.

  Onlysomeonewithobscenestrengthcouldeasilywieldsuchamonstrous weapon.

  Asforhisface,itwasasmanlyashisbodydeserved.Squarejaw,strong features,adarkstubble,andastarethatcouldsendminotaursfleeing.Allframed withlong,blowing,blackhair.

  Alexwasinawe.Thisguywasn’tliketheheroesinhisfantasynovels.They wereusuallyguyslikehim.Unassuming.Thesurpriseh
ero.

  Thisguywasabadass.Hedidn’tneedtoworryaboutgettingthegirlinthe end.He’dhadadifferentgirloneverypage.Whenhewalkedinaroom,allthe ladiescreamedtheirpanties.

  Alex’sfaceburnedredashisinsidesturnedhot,hot,hot.Hewasfeelingthe sameeffect.Hewasn’tgay,butthisguywastoohot.Toosexy.HemadeAlex’s heartpoundandmouthdry.

  “Catgotyourtongue,love?”thebarbarianasked.Helookedcustombuiltto playthatrole.“Notevengonnageta‘thanks’?”

  “Thanks,”Alexsomehowsaid.Therewasadesertinhismouth.

  “Noproblem,babe.What’saprettylilthinglikeyoudoingallthewayout here?You’dbewolfchowifitweren’tforme.”

  Babe?Prettylilthing?Alexwaslittle,comparedtothisman-giant,buthe wouldneverconsiderhimselftobepretty.Hewasaguy.Atmosthewouldwant tobehandsome.

  Honestly,hewasveryaverage.Anormal,unassuming,guy.

  Thebarbarian,notsomuch.

  “Idon’tknow,”Alexsaid.“LastthingIrememberedwasbeinginmy apartment.ThenIendedupouthere.”Thesleepwalkingtheorywasoutofthe

  window.EvenifAlexhadmanagedtowanderallthewaytosomeforest,thathe hadneverseenbefore,nowaywouldheeverfindabarbarianstudroaming around.“Whereishere?”

  “TheHowlingForest,ofcourse.Dangerousfordelicatethingslikeyou.”

  “TheHowlingForest?What?Bemoreclear.Whatisthislandcalled?This worldcalled.”

  “Didyouhityourheadorsomething,girly?”

  “Justtellme,please.”

  “You’reoneweirdchick.HowcouldyouforgetAddovion?”

  Addovion.Alexhadneverheardthetermbefore,butitwasn’tEarth.It soundedlikesomethingfromoneofhisfantasybooks.Andthebarbarianwasa manfittobecastinthem.

  ThenAlex’strainofthoughtslippedtheotherway.“Wait.Whatdidyoucall me?”

  “Ididn’tcallyounothing,missy.Youain’ttoldmeyourname.Thenagain, guessIain’ttoldyoumine.”Hethumpedahandtohisbroadchest.“Name’s Draug.”

  Alexdidn’tgiveashitwhatDraugwascalled.Hewasmorefocusedon girly.Missy.Chick.

  Hetwistedaroundandtookalookattheriver.Thewaterwasflowingby, whichdistortedtheimage,butAlexcouldmakeoutsomekeyfeatures.

  Longblondehair.Softface.Plumplips.Hugetits.
