The so-called lawyer swaggered around the backstage door with his usual arrogant flair. “If this is going to be a preamble to you and your shadow sticking it to me out there, keep in mind that your stunt will have a devastating effect on—”

  “I killed him.”

Lehman’s expression brightened. “Where, may I ask?”

  “In the parking garage.”

“What are you saying—in front of the security cameras?”

“It all happened inside my car, in dim light, behind tinted windows. And to alleviate your next concern, I can pull the back seats down and push things into the trunk from the inside. …Look, it wasn’t exactly my choice that this happened.”

“No, no, of course not. I’ve already been in your shoes, but failed, so you spared me a very difficult task. It’s unfortunate, but there cannot be two of you. I don’t know how he left that clinic, but at least, now, they’ll be more than willing to produce any document I desire, after I threaten to sue their asses for allowing my prominent client’s wayward son to slip out of their custody.”

  They nodded at one another.

“I guess this explains your partial wardrobe change. Got blood on your clothes, did you? We’ll just tell them you were unexpectedly sick.”

“I know what you did, Lehman…and my father is going to murder you when he finds out.”

“Not likely, kiddo. I don’t think he shares that homicidal gene with you…Shanniens. And I know what you did. So, unless you want to traumatize your family, all over again, by forcing me to divulge that you killed your own twin, just let them go on believing your brother sadly died from his stab wound.

“As for the public, they can now receive the same confirmation about their delusional Morning’s Desire fan. End of story. They’re all waiting for us out there, and we can take care of the whatever mess you made, after the conference. Come now…”

The lawyer opened the door to the stage and dared to drape his arm around the star.

Once seated, Morgen tugged on his stolen head-wrap that held his hair in place, over his unscathed ear, and he watched as a melancholy hush worked its way through the room.

He wanted to tell the world he’d always felt a connection to someone unseen, somebody he’d never met. He also wanted to confess how his chart-topping song, My Other Side, had been inspired by this overwhelming force, and that he hoped to find the real person someday.

But Morgen could already sense him—even more profoundly than the pain from his mending stab wound. In front of everyone, the nightmare he’d spawned had found a way to invade the material realm of the conference hall. He could feel Night’s shallow breath moving in from behind him, and in spite of what he’d done, he could feel the arms of his inexorable other half cinching around him in a parasitic embrace…just hanging on.
