His eyes were blank, so I added. “Our lunch meeting with Liss, remember?” Still blank eyes. I sighed. “My new agent? For my book?”
“Oh. The meeting is today?”
I glanced at the watch Kevin had bought for me last week. It wasn’t expensive, but it was worth more to me than any fancy watch. “Thirty minutes from now, but the cafe we chose is pretty close.” I bounced on my feet with excitement. “I want to get there early.”
“You’re closing a deal for the book you finished last month, right?” He frowned. “Not my favorite book of yours.”
“Why? Because I modeled my hero after you? Blue eyes, sexy as hell, amazing jawline, and an even better body?”
“You over and under exaggerate some stuff. I’m not that much of an asshole, and I’m way better in bed than you let off to be. And my cock is larger, too. You should very well know that by now, babe.”
“He’s not exactly you, dummy. I just used you as an inspiration.”
Kevin nodded and took my hand. We headed out of our room, and he dropped his hand to walk in front of me, holding the door open.
I smiled. “Thank you.”
“What was the title of your book again? Something roommate? Hell, you even copied how we met, by being roommates.”
“And being my boss by some crazy chance,” I added, feeling warm with my hand back in his.
“What was the title of your book? Asshole roommate?”
“You’ll find out at our meeting. Come on, I really want to be there early.”
“Fine.” We walked for a while until he stopped suddenly and patted both his pockets with his free hand. “Shit, I forgot my chewing gum.”
“You can live without your new found obsession of strawberry flavored gum.”
“I’ll be right back,” he said before releasing his grip on me and brisk walking back to our apartment, leaving me with tingles on my palm and the floating scent of pineapples.
I shook my head as I watched him go, cupping my hands and calling out behind him. “You’re such a handful, Kevin Bond, you know that?”
“It’ll just be a minute!” He turned the corner and was gone.
I leaned against the wall and waited for my Mr. Perfect to return, and when he did, he made it worth the wait by pressing another sweet peck onto my lips.
“See? It only took fifty-two and a half seconds.” He popped the chewing gum into his mouth and took my hand.
My laughter filled the hallway.
“I’m getting you a big diamond ring,” he said as he led me to the elevators. “Three carats minimum.”
I knew he was going to propose to me. Kevin’s mom accidentally let it slip when we had a family dinner last week. Kevin was pretty annoyed, but there wasn’t anything he could do at that point. Some good came out of it, though. He wanted to go down on one knee in front of the Eiffel Tower, but I told him to do it in private because I hated the thought of people gaping at us. What we were going to do during the trip was still a secret to me, and I wanted it to be kept that way.
‘Surprise me,” I had told him, to which he stated with certainty I would be surprised, and that only brought my anticipation way up.
I would say yes, of course. There wasn’t any other man in the world that I would want to spend my every living second with. I loved him more than I used to think was possible and more than I could ever love anyone else.
I knew I would tear up when he does finally go down on one knee even though I had already teared up more times than I dared to admit just by visualizing the scenario.
Shooting him a look, I bumped his shoulder. “Love, we talked about this. Get me a silver or a platinum ring. We just bought a place and we’re planning a trip. We can’t afford to buy other expensive shit.”
“It’s not shit. It’s your engagement ring.”
“Still, it’s just a ring. Spending thousands on it is such a huge waste. Hell, give me a plastic ring, and I would gladly wear it.”
“Diamond ring. Minimum three carats.”
I broke into a smile. The only person more stubborn than my mother was Kevin. “No way.”
“Minimum two carats.”
“Nope.”
“I’ll give you a beautiful one carat diamond ring.”
I squeezed his hand and held him close. “You’re so troublesome.”
