At All Cost: A Mountain Man Romance Page 16

“Ooh like what?” Hugging his waist, she buried her face happily in his chest.

“Some chores and a surprise,” he set the protesting kitten on her shoulder.

Smiling, Alessia reached up to the kitten and put him on the floor as she stepped back. “I like surprises,” she hinted for him to tell.

Shaking his head, he grabbed her by the shoulders and gently turned her around and pushed her towards the couch. “All in due time, I still want to hear about your day at the library. Did you and Hershenhorn talk the guys who run the bed and breakfast into your idea?”

Turning around, she beamed proudly, practically bouncing on her tiptoes. "Yes! Yes, we did. Oh Jax, I'm so happy," whirling around, she circled the couch to sit down when she froze. Pointing to a spot on the kitchen floor, she frowned back at him. "Jax there is some blood on the floor. What happened did you cut yourself?"

What in the fuck? How did serial killers do this shit? He just cleaned that area. Walking over, he gave the offending droplets of blood a nonchalant look before giving her a guilty expression.

"Okay, well, I was hoping to tell you differently, so don't freak out."

She stood still as she waited.

“I was out and came across some rabbits, it was just too good of shots to pass up,” he gave her a sympathetic face as he explained.

Holding both hands to her mouth, she gave him a horrified look. “Not the bunnies,” she whispered. “Is that your surprise? That’s an awful surprise.”

Chuckling, Jax grabbed his clean shirt from the back of the kitchen chair. “No, that’s not the surprise. I was just hoping to tell you that part when you asked what smelled so good later.”

Giving him a trepidatious smile, she scanned the kitchen warily, looking for any sign of the little bunny bodies. "They're not going to have their heads or anything when you cook them, right?" She asked with an all-over shiver.

Holding his hand up to his chest in mock hurt, he looked at her. "I am not a cold-blooded savage," he lied. "Now, back to your story."

Wiping up the last of the evidence, Jax prepared the skinned and dressed rabbits for the stew with his back to the living room as she talked about her day.

“You know, when I was driving back, I saw some smoke on the other side of the highway further down.”

“Really?” He questioned as he put the lid on the pot before turning back to her.

Playing over the back of the sofa, she had the cat toy in one hand, bobbing it up and down just out of reach as Whiskers jumped and vaulted after the colorful ball attached to the string.

"Yeah, and it made me think," she looked at him as she dangled the toy. "I bet it was another one of Steve's insurance scam clients."

“Mmm,” Jax feigned to think as he stared out the window at the darkening sky.

Hopefully, that was what anyone would think if they found the old burnt Lincoln.

“Soo,” she let the word stretch purposely giving him an impatient look. “What about the surprise?”

Tsking his tongue, he shook his head and got up, walking over to the second door next to the bathroom, he crooked his finger at her. Giddily, she ran around the couch with the Whiskers at her heels. Opening the door to the bedroom, Jax didn't take his eyes off hers as she gasped.

Strung twinkling lights hung from the ceiling of the finished room. On one side, the ceiling was the normal solid gabled wood while the other was a translucent industrial-grade acrylic material allowing them to see the sky.

“Oh my God, Jax you finished it,” stepping into the empty room Alessia turned in a circle with her arms out. “It’s beautiful.”

"Of course, we would have to move the bed, dresser, and nightstand but…" He tried to quickly clarify, justifying why the room was empty. Somehow, he was nervous about her reaction which was ludicrous, really considering his activity that day.

"Yes, yes of course," she smiled so big as she stared up at his handiwork, Jax contemplated taking a picture. He wanted this moment immortalized; in this exact moment, he was sure without a doubt she was truly happy—a moment he had given her. Turning back to him, he could see the tears glimmering in her eyes as she wrapped her arms around his waist. Holding her tight in return, he let his chin rest on the top of her head.

“You really were busy today,” her muffled laughs vibrated into his chest.

She had no idea, between burying a body, filing down teeth, burying said teeth in various spots in the forest, burning a car, catching some rabbits, and finally finishing this room, he was exhausted.

"Thank you so much for this, thank you for everything." Tilting her head back, she wordlessly requested a kiss to which he happily obliged. "I love you."

Deepening the kiss, Jax pressed her closer to him feeling her breasts crush against his chest. She was heaven, with her next to him there was nothing he felt like he couldn’t or wouldn’t do. She was his and he was hers against all odds and at all cost.
