My nights were restless, spent pondering her words. How absurd for her to still believe in such silly things. Didn’t her father’s actions teach her there’s no good in the world? He sold her without a doubt to become the King of Assassin’s whore. Everyone with blood in their veins and breath in their body only looks out for themselves. I wanted to pity her, but I found I couldn’t. Because once upon a time, I was saved. Not by the knight, but the villain of the story. The same villain who now plays the starring role in her nightmares.
My recovery was a slow process, but within that time, we started to grow closer. As she nursed me back to health, she dropped her walls around me, and in return, I showed her a glimpse of my true self. The man I would have been if I had not grown up in the guild. We fell in love and it was that love which doomed us.
Never drop your guard. No matter how peaceful things may appear. Always assume someone is after you. Trust no one and nothing but the weapon you wield in your hand. These are things that have been drilled into me from the moment I was taken off the streets, but every time I was around her, I’d forget who I was and the life we lived in.
Like her hair, it was a moonless night when Father sent three of his men to check up on me. Three of my rivals who’d like nothing more than to slit my throat and take my place as heir of the assassins. I made it all too easy on them to witness my treachery as I broke every rule I’d sworn my life by.
Never cross the King of Assassins. He is the only one worthy of our loyalty.
Kill only if we are paid.
Never fall in love.
The three of them came after me with everything they had. Short swords have always been my weapon of choice and I used them to cut them down in my own deadly dance to the Devil’s tune. Strike, lunge, sweep. Strike, spin, lunge. This is my game and only I know the rules. I’m good, maybe too good. Neither man could hold up to my skill, but I was cocky with only one weakness… her.
Like a thief in the night, one got away, dragging her screaming body off with him. I already knew where he was taking her, and even if I left now, I still wouldn’t be able to catch up to them. When the sun started to rise on the horizon, I sent out a prayer to the Devil, the only higher being who’d heed my call. The Gods had given up on me the same moment I turned my back on them and became a monster. I didn’t pray for my life, but hers. I knew I was going to die; I just didn’t want her to suffer for my weakness as well.
Father was waiting on me with his sword in his hand. He had sent away the other assassins in the guild, leaving only the one that dragged sweet Aurora away to serve as a witness. I’ll never forget the betrayal in his face or the unbridled anger he was barely containing. I broke the rules, I killed my brothers, and I touched what did not belong to me, only to him. To everyone in the guild, I wasn’t worthy of my name. No longer an assassin, but a traitor. But before we crossed swords, he only asked one question. “Why?”
I wish I had a better answer, but the only thing I could reply is, “Because I love her.”
With those damning words, he attacks. Swift like the wind, each strike fierce and precise like lighting, he proves over and over with his sword and skill why he’s the King of Assassins and I am nothing but a carbon copy, his creation. He was the one who trained me. He knows my every move, my every weakness and trick. This fight was futile, delaying the inevitable. He did not go easy on me but I didn’t expect him to. I fought, I gave it my all, but even my best was not enough.
Panting hard, with the tip of his sword at my neck, I see my life flash before my eyes, but even still I don’t regret a thing. An ear piercing scream breaks me out my reverie and my gaze automatically turns to her. The guild is back, all of them standing alert with her in the front to bear witness to my fall from grace. I guess he wants them all to see my death after all. He wants them to see just what happens when one of us betrays him and breaks the rules. No one is exempt, not even the one he calls son.
“I’m going to kill you, but before I do, you’ll watch as each man here takes their turn so you’ll see how much a whore she really is. What you were willing to give your life up for.”
He held me still as they stripped her naked and took her one by one. This time, I couldn’t block out her screams or be a coward and look away. I endured with her and felt her pain as if it were my own. As I bleed in my Father’s grip, I was losing more than my life force, I was losing my heart and soul. With my eyes on her, I did not miss it when she grabbed the dagger from the man beside her and, with no hesitation, she slit her own throat.
I cried, roared my fury at the world. Finding a renewed strength, I broke away, grabbed my short sword from the ground, and stabbed my adopted father in the heart, killing him. The King of the Assassins fell that night, but so did the prince when, once the guild got over their shock, they killed me too as I rained down my fury on them. I could have been the next king but without my queen, life was not worth living.
Hidden by the clouds, I do not see the moon. I die staring into the darkness, with my hand outstretched to someone I can never reach again. She was not supposed to die, especially the way she did with her dignity torn to shreds. She deserved better. She deserved to die for someone better than me. I curse the Devil’s name as coldness grips me, beckoning me forward. My rage burns on as I defy the Satan of my soul. Something else calls me, a floating light in the darkness, and I grip onto it with a fierce intensity, allowing the darkness to carry me away.
Note From The Author
I’m such a huge anime fan so I really enjoyed writing this story. The idea burst in my head like a rocket and took hostage of my body until I completed the first book. I’m hoping to finish this project within two books, but it may stray to three. I hope you enjoy Angelica’s story as much as I do and hopefully I made an anime fan out of you.
I already noted my inspiration from this story. It’s all thanks to The Fate Series created by Studio Deen. Also if there’s any Pretty Little Liar fans out there, I’m sure you recognized the lyrics to their theme song Secret written by Allison and Catherine Eleanor Pierce. Also Every Breath by Denmark + Winter.
