The Other Woman: A psychological suspense thriller Page 25

Henry kissed his grandmother and threw himself down on the couch. Harper immediately crawled up into his lap and put her arms around his neck. “I’m glad you don't have to live in the hall with your own room anymore.”

“Me too,” Henry said. “And guess what?”

“What?” Harper asked, her little hands tugging at his neck impatiently.

“Mom and Dad are going to invite Quinn to come and live with us.”

Harper opened her mouth wide and stared at Henry. “Forever and ever?”

Henry laughed. “Well, at least until he's grown up. What do you think about that?”

“Then I can have two big brothers.” Harper cocked her head to one side contemplatively. “Mommy!” she called across to Bridget. “Can Maria be our housekeeper when Quinn comes to live with us?”

Bridget smiled, trying hard not to laugh and hurt her throat again. “Maybe. We can certainly ask her.”

Henry narrowed his eyes teasingly at his sister. “But only if you promise to tidy up your Barbies every day so she doesn’t trip on them.”

Across the room, Bridget met her husband’s gaze. I love you, she mouthed to him.

He pressed his fingertips to his lips and blew her a kiss in return.

Gratitude welled up inside her for the family she’d been blessed with—the family she’d almost lost thanks to a fatal hesitation, an undelivered dinner, followed by a string of false assumptions, bad decisions, and terrifying outcomes. There and then, she vowed to never again doubt the motives of the man who’d been faithful to her throughout their marriage. Their relationship was far from perfect, but it wasn’t the mess she’d thought she would have to mop up either. It was a matter of knowing what to hold on to and what to let go of. And that had become a whole lot clearer over the past few days.

Their story wasn’t over. She looked forward to turning a new page, cherishing the next chapter, and growing old together.

The other woman hadn’t been so lucky when Jack’s hands closed around her neck, but Bridget had been given a second chance. And she intended to seize it.
