My First Christmas Tree Page 3

by A.K. Downs & R. Brooks

ornamental trees around the property were all strung with Christmas lights and the house had so many lights on along the eves and around the doors and windows that is was aglow. Yet, the decoration that captured Tommy’s attention the most was the Nativity in the front yard. Tommy walked up to it and turned to his new dad and asked, “Is this the manger where Jesus was born?” His father replied, “Yes, it is Tommy. Our family displays the Nativity to remind us about the true meaning of Christmas.”

Tommy almost forgot about Dougie, his first fresh cut Christmas tree that he ever had. Almost, but soon Tommy, his father and his mother, and Dougie were in the house.

Tommy’s dad immediately started working on the tree by cutting the bottom trunk, so that it was flat. Together, Tommy and his dad put it into the tree stand. About this time, Tommy’s mom came back from the kitchen carrying three steaming mugs of hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. Tommy had never had real hot chocolate. He carefully held the mug and licked at the whipped topping. The family then set to decorating the tree. They strung lights first, followed by garland, ornaments, and even real candy canes. The final decoration was a star, which went right on top of the tree. A Christmas miracle has come to life. Dougie felt proud in his new home as the family’s Christmas tree. Tommy sat on the sofa next to his parents, and they watched the tree lights blink on and off. Tommy thought about Nurse Jackson tucking the kids into their beds. He thought about Mr. Swenson back on his Christmas tree farm. He beamed with pride at Dougie the Christmas tree. Tommy whispered out loud, “Merry Christmas to all, and blessings to everyone on this special and holy night.” The quiet night settled on the little neighborhood.
