CONFLICT DIAMONDS: THE START OF THE BEGINNING Page 28

by Verner Jones

She picked up a jacket from the wash basket and started to peg it on the line. She froze and stared at the jacket as an old memory replayed itself. She was back in Henrick’s office standing at the diamond-sorting table after just threatening to put a bullet into Henrick if he didn’t give them a better offer for their diamonds. The jacket half pegged on the line was the one she was wearing on that day. She dropped the pegs she was holding grabbed the jacket in both hands and stared at the top pocket unable to move in case what she was remembering was wrong. A moment passed and tentatively she opened the flap and slipped two fingers into the pocket. She felt it and gasped. She pinched the loupe-clean, pure-white-diamond between her fingers and showed it to the light of day, the one Henrick had said was of little value and the one she had forgotten about, the one that she had taken as a souvenir, the one Henrick had put aside for his Celine, the most valuable of all the diamonds they had presented to him. Marta, full of excitement shouted Stipe’s name and started to run back into the house. She met him in the kitchen looking alarmed at her outburst. Before he could speak Marta burst out,

“Remember this when we were in Henrick’s office?” She showed the diamond to him. “I took it as a souvenir, remember? I forgot all about it until now when I was hanging out the washing and the memory of that day came back to me.” They both looked at each other in astonishment. A flood of possibilities flushed over them. Simultaneously they looked at the phone on the wall then back to each other. “ Go get Celine s number said Marta. “ We need to give her a call.”
