Shaman's Blues Page 35

Kenny went to the kitchen, turned on the tiny netbook on the table. It was Frank’s, but Frank wasn’t attached to his stuff. After pouring a glass of iced green tea, Kenny did his gratitude practice. Before shopping for music, he sent a carefully composed and thoughtful e-mail to Ruth Smyth through ruthsmythart.com, letting her know he’d hit the one-year anniversary, and that he still liked the chakra art book, and Dada Café was thriving. She never answered when he contacted her, but it didn’t matter. This was his practice. He felt good letting her know.

  Virginia Beach, VA

Excited, Deborah bought a copy of the new Jangarrai CD the day it came in at the Healing Balance bookstore, took it up to her office and slid it into her computer.

This was different. Not what she expected, but delightful. Not otherworldly healing music, but powerful drumming, love songs, and blues. Fiery, passionate, and worldly. Some of the songs got her hips and feet dancing, others moved her almost to tears.

This was his best work yet. Thank me, Jangarrai. Thank me, world. And thank you, Mae. We made this happen.

  Author’s notes:

I made a few minor changes in the names or locations of things in Santa Fe.

I changed the houses on the block of Delgado between Palace and Alameda, adding the alley/shared driveway, and breaking up the big white house with the gates in front into two smaller houses for the purpose of my story.

I moved the rocks in the river to the east side of the bridge at Delgado and Alameda. If the rocks were in their real location, only on the west side, that would require Dusty to cross to that side of bridge, and he has no reason to. The rocks have to be there, but he doesn’t go looking for them. The soft dirt on the east side of the bridge wouldn’t work.

The college where Jamie’s father and Alan Pacheco teach is fictitious.

Marisol’s is fictitious, in the approximate location of Tomasita’s, but smaller and louder and open later.

The dinosaurs are no longer on the roof but they were there in the year in which this book is set. I’m not sure if that building had become the shelter yet in 2010, but for the sake of the story, it had.

I created a slightly different mall in the location of Sanbusco Center: La Villa Real Center. The full name of Santa Fe is La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis.

The cat village at a Ford dealership is actually in Staunton VA, not Santa Fe.

Of course, Dada Café is fictitious, but T or C is delightfully real.
