WHAT’S HAPPENED SO FAR
Twenty human women have their own reasons for selling their bodies to aliens for money, and none of their stories are the same. And it’s these twenty women who find themselves together on an assignment claiming to be different from the rest. Most alien races don’t bring twenty women at once. Most aliens don’t say they’re looking for a Chosen mate. And certainly, most aliens don’t promise their human females that they can stay with them forever. More importantly, they’re no longer going to be seen as pets. And while plenty of the women are happy to carry the new title of equal, many believe their unique circumstances are too good to be true. After all, aliens aren’t kind to humans. And what little history they know of their new buyers – Sidyths –isn’t promising.
Sidyths originate on Sidetha, and are known throughout the galaxy for disrespecting women. They say they’re weak. They say they’re impulsive. And if the females on their homeworld don’t measure up, they’re thrown into something referred to as “the hunt”. There are a few who know about this, but their lips are sealed.
Luckily, this isn’t their homeworld, and these Sidyths claim to be different from the rest.
Exiled from home for refusing to follow Sidyth custom and sent to an out of the way world to fade into obscurity, their numbers are hard to guess and their motivations are even more opaque. And while some of these aliens claim they’re different, there are often homesick whisperings of the fatherland.
The Sidyths are somewhat humanoid in appearance; only they’re also seven feet tall, pale, covered in scales, and continuously freezing without the constant presence of sun rayers or heat. They have a surprising amount of comfort considering their exile status, and the women have recently figured out that they have a former Sidyth royal, Prince Korben, to thank for that. Thanks to the mercy of the prince’s father, despite the rainy days and horrific creatures living in the forests, life isn’t terrible.
But life as a space entertainer isn’t great yet either.
Prince Korben didn’t order twenty human females to Hethdiss for fun. He’s looking for a mate. He wishes all his most trusted brothers to find mates as well. He longs to create a utopia where women are treated equally, and thanks to the research of one of his closest allies, they’ve found the most compatible species at a low cost. Most of Prince Korben’s brothers are thrilled at the idea of having a human female mate, but few of the human women are that enthusiastic. Prince Korben promises that all the human women will be safe and welcome to stay if they’re happy on Hethdiss, but most of these women have been working too long to take the promise of an alien too seriously.
Things are going well enough for the humans the past few months. Prince Korben has found a mate in Blythe, the busty, feisty de facto leader of the group who continually has doubts if anyone likes her anymore. And there are two more successful pairings – Azan and York and Hujun and Ellis. So far, so good. The women care for their mates, and the aliens aren’t doing anything too suspicious. But not everyone is excited about being kept by a Sidyth. Some view it as moving from one cage to a slightly larger one.
Layla is one of these women. And this is where Demanded by the Alien begins.
CHAPTER ONE
Layla
My thoughts drift too often lately. Maybe it’s because I long to remain trapped in my mind where it’s safe, but it likely has more to do with a particular alien who’s convinced I’m going to be his mate.
When I and a few of the others I trust, go outside to get away from the humid, muddy heat, this alien follows me. He talks to me. He always wants me to know that he’s keeping an eye on me.
That would great if the alien doing these things did anything for my lady parts.
Which he doesn’t.
It’s been weeks since, what I like to call, The Christmas Situation, but my alien stalker isn’t the least bit deterred. If anything, he’s more motivated than ever to grab my attention. Images of him dancing around, playing the air guitar, and belting out a song that features my name still haunt my memories, though. No matter how hard I try to pinch the embarrassing moment away, it’s always right there. Seven feet tall, dancing, singing Dolan the alien. I shudder. I still remember how I glanced over at Sloane, who is supposed to be my best friend here, that Christmas afternoon and how she giggled behind her hand as Dolan performed. I’m not sure the alien obsessed with her saw the whole thing, and honestly? I’m too terrified to ask him. For some reason, I always turn into a blathering idiot around him.
Not Dolan. Exer. The alien who’s obsessed with Sloane.
I sigh between my teeth, allowing my thoughts to wander because I don’t want to think about Dolan’s performance or Sloane’s soft snickering behind her slender hand. There’s too much humiliation. But then again, if I don’t think of them, there’s only one place my mind wants to search out.
Shep.
Enormous brown eyes that match mine, and a dark mop of hair that’s like mine, too. People back home always said we look alike and they’re not wrong. Shep’s only three years younger than me, but I always babied him. Too much. I wanted to give him everything all the time. I wanted to lasso the moon for him as George Bailey would say. I wanted to make sure that his cheeks remained full like mine and his body strong. Shep isn’t a child, though. He hasn’t looked like a child since he turned nine. Shep’s a big guy. A man with a child’s face that any woman or man would be honored to be seen with if he wasn’t… the way he was.
I shouldn’t have been the only one able to look past his problems.
I bite back another sigh, laying on my back on the grass, staring at the sky. It’s not raining today, which is a pleasant surprise, but the weather’s getting so warm that I’m not sure how much longer I’m going to stay outside. Still, I have to remember that non-rainy days are at a premium here. Most of the time it’s pouring, dangerous, with dark clouds looming across the strangely colored lavende
r sky. The pink suns are already beating down on my brown skin, so, what're a few more shades? I’m not trying to impress anyone here.
Not really.
A few other girls chat loudly in the distance, probably doing the same thing I am. I recognize the workout twins, Rene, and Devyn talking harshly to Aoi who keeps sparing longing glances toward the main lair. Alaska and Arizona are complaining about Kansas’ behavior. Even Blythe is out here today. Chentan (the closest thing we have to a doctor/gynecologist/dentist/nurse) probably told her the suns would be good for her. A pregnant woman shouldn’t be looked up under the earth with only sun rayers to keep her warm at night. Her husband/Chosen/mate/whatever, Prince Korben probably doesn’t agree, but the further along Blythe gets into her pregnancy, the more lenient he becomes.
Yeah, there’s a bunch of voices out here, but none I’m particularly interested in.
Despite his problems, I wish my dad were here. He’d tell me to buck the fuck up and shut up, hija mía like he always does when it comes to anything involving Shep. And at the end of the day, that’s all this assignment is — something else involving Shep. I don’t mind the pressure, but after only a few months since signing the contract to become an intergalactic space entertainer (let’s call it what it really is, STAR WHORES), I’m already forgetting what he looks like. I hate that. Now, the only things I see lately are the other girls on assignment and Sidyths.
Sidyths. Honest to God, I don’t care what they want to call themselves, they’re all the same to me, dammit and that’s aliens.
Octonods? Drakens? Entlas? I don’t give a damn about their names. They’re aliens. Strange and often cruel beings who think humans are nothing more than a way to wet their dick. They put out the money; they expect us to put out the pussy. When I signed the paper, my life was no longer my own. And if I wanted any chance at all to see my brother or at least get money back to him, I wouldn’t complain about anything.
What a joke. I’m never going home again. I’m never going to see Shep, and he’s probably not going to get a credit of any of the money I’ve earned and will continue to receive. My father was desperate for the down payment. He sold me to aliens for a chance of gaining some extra medical credits.
And yet, knowing all of that, I don’t cause problems. Some small part of me holds on to the idea that if I can’t go home again, I’ll get the credits sent back to Shep. That not everything is lost. That maybe something will be sent back. The lies change daily: I have to work a few more jobs. I have to get a few more clients. I have to survive a few more months. Years. Maybe there’s a bonus if I die on the job. I don’t know, but I’ve got to hold on to something or else I have nothing.
If I can’t save my brother, then what am I supposed to hold on to at night when nightmares push their way through the empty darkness?
At least this assignment with the Sidyths hasn’t been as terrible as the others. A few months ago, I thought my life was going to be hell. I remember when a Draken dropped the truth bomb on me. I had no rights. I had no way to get home. I better behave if I want to live another day. Early on, some girls spoke about a so-called training academy. What the hell? A place in space to become a well-trained space prostitute? I don’t ask. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones, I suppose. My training didn’t happen at an academy; it happened with an old female Octonod. She was floppy-limbed but firm.
I did what she said. She wasn’t a monster, but she wasn’t human either.
The idea of getting money or medical credits sent back to my brother was enough to keep going.
The day she sent me away, I remember the look on her face. She let me know that my pleasant time had come to an end. She informed me that I would be joining other humans for my first assignment. The money was too good to pass up, and apparently, she received some of the payment for ‘training’ me so well. I nodded numbly at her, pinching my eyes shut and trying to remember Shep’s face. I remember my dad’s face too. Do it for Shep, hija mía, he’d always say. He knew how to bait me. Shep needs you, babygirl. Do it for him. Love your brother because no one else could.
His words still send chills down my spine, but they also keep me motivated.
I did have to keep going for Shep. I still do.
And so I took a few assignments those first few months. They were awful, but they never broke me like they broke the others. I’m not ever going to break. I’m staying alive for my brother. I’m working hard for my brother. I’m indifferent because of my brother. I keep my head down and keep chugging along because if I think about anything else, I’m afraid I’ll melt into the teal grass on Hethdiss and these new aliens will walk all over me.
The new aliens. Sigh. This is my first assignment with Sidyths, and the rumors weren’t exaggerated. They’re seven feet tall, pale, scaled, with golden yellow eyes. I still can’t decide if their eyes are more like a cat’s or a snake’s. But Sidyths are no kitty-cats. They could easily overpower us. Some of the others say they have a reputation for being cruel to females, but I try not to pay attention to any of that. All aliens are assholes as far as I’m concerned. So long as I live another day, convincing myself that my brother is okay and getting medical credits, I don’t need anything else.
Hope is all I have.
Hope. And watching him.
Despite all aliens looking the same to me, there’s one that breaks that mold. He’s different. He not only looks human, but he also looks like something right out of a romance novel. He’s tall (naturally), but there are no scales on the front of his body. Just hard, defined muscles. His back’s covered in pale, luminescent scales, but if you look at him from the front, he looks like a human. A gigantic human with yellow eyes, but a human, nonetheless.
His name is Exer.
I shouldn’t look at him so much.
He’s not looking at me, that’s for sure.
Rising on my elbows, my heart sinks when I locate the humanoid looking alien. He’s so dark and brooding, moody and mysterious. He doesn’t say much, but he sometimes smiles when I bound up to him. Ugh, he probably thinks I’m desperate for a mate, but I don’t give a damn. He’s the most human-looking alien I’ve seen since I started working, and I can’t ignore that.
But of course, he’s not smiling at me now. He’s not talking to me. And he’s not looking in my direction.
My frown deepens when I notice the Exer’s mouth crook up in the corner as the human he’s talking to says something that must be hilarious.
Ugh, I shouldn’t be such a bitch. The human he’s talking to is my best friend here despite how awful and jealous I’ve been.
I can’t blame Exer for wanting to talk to her and not me. My friend Sloane is gorgeous. She’s almost as pale as the Sidyths, and she’s tall, slim, and toned without ever breaking a sweat or drinking apple cider vinegar. She could be a model. And her hair. That’s the best part. It’s an unnaturally deep, rich, ruby color, and styled perfectly straight with thick bangs across her forehead. I’m so jealous sometimes I could scream, but Sloane’s promised me that her life isn’t so fantastic. Her last owner styled aliens on her homeworld. Sloane was her guinea pig. And despite how good she looks now; most days were pretty painful. Or so she says.
I stand and stretch, tired of seeing Exer and Sloane enjoying each other’s company so much. Sloane isn’t interested in Exer the same way I am. She sees him as a friend. She finds him grumpy, and I’m convinced she has a Prince Charming complex. Hello? They’re aliens. None of them are going to be Prince Charming. She sees Exer as someone she can confide in, but I want more from the humanoid alien.
Despite feeling the prickle from the eyes of another Sidyth observing me as I make my way over to Exer and Sloane, I don’t turn.
“Finished sunbathing? Your skin looks amazing lately. I’m jealous. I burn so easily that I can’t stand it.” Sloane flashes her perfectly white grin in my direction. She’s painfully beautiful even with a hood tied around her head on this humid afternoon.
“There aren’t many d
ays we can do this.” I lower my head with a blush as Exer lowers his chin to listen more intently to our conversation.
“You really think my skin looks all right?”
“Girl, you’re hotter than a habanero.”
“Ugh, that’s racist. Just because my dad’s Mexican—”
Sloane flushes. “I’m… I’m kidding. I didn’t mean anything by it—”
“I know you didn’t.” I wink at her. “Chill, chica. I’m only messing with you.” I steal a look at Exer, but he doesn’t follow most of what we’re saying, I’m sure. Or maybe he’s just not paying attention because Sloane isn’t talking so much. Sigh. I can’t blame him for being bored with my presence.
I’m not tall like Sloane. I’m not a damn adult baby like Ellis, but I’m nowhere near Sloane’s height. I’m average. In most things, really, other than the number that used to glare up at me from the scale my dad kept in the bathroom next to the toilet. My hair’s pretty enough, but it’s only brown. It’s got some wave, but it’s nothing special. My brown eyes are enormous, but they’re not as pretty as Sloane’s pale blue ones. I don’t have that whole sunken-in-cheeks look that Exer likes. I never asked him, but he must like it. He can’t stop staring at Sloane. Most of the time I can’t tell if he wants to eat her, fuck her, or roll his eyes at her. Either way, it’s enticing, and I guess I’m not because my face is round and full like a cherub’s. I also have way too many curves. A round ass. Huge breasts and wide hips. I don’t hate my body. I stand out on this assignment because I’m one of the heaviest ones here, but I’m nothing a guy back home wouldn’t take to bed. I’m cute, but I’m nothing too special.
But I am cute.
I try to work that.
“What are your plans for the rest of the day?” I try to capture Exer’s intense golden eyes. The moment my chin lifts, his does too, and he stares off into the distance.
