Chapter One
Claudia
I couldn’t believe that I was having a baby, and with the man of my dreams. I never thought that I would be mated, much less having a child. I knew it would be hard to tell my pack, especially telling my brother. I knew he’d be happy, but I wondered if he might be upset since he’d always wanted a child. I knew one day Abby and Paul would have a child, but when they least expected it. They’d been trying for years but they hadn’t had any luck so far.
When I told Carson, he was so happy that I thought he might climb up to the roof and shout it for all to hear, but he didn’t. We sat there and held one another until the shock went away. We knew we had to tell everyone, but we just couldn’t move out of the bathroom.
“We should tell everyone; they should know what’s going on.” Carson said as he got up from the floor.
“I know, but I just can’t seem to get up,” I said, looking up at him.
He reached his hands out to help me get up from the floor, I took them, and he pulled me up.
“Thank you. I guess I should at least tell my brother and you should tell yours as well,” I told him.
“Yes, let’s get everyone together and tell them at once.” He said
“I’m not sure if I’m ready to tell everyone else.” I told him as I rubbed my arm.
He wrapped his arms around me and I knew everything would be okay. I wanted to tell Paul first before I told anyone else. He was my brother and the only one I went to when I had news to share.
I unwrapped myself from Carson’s arms and made my way to the door.
“Where are you going?” Carson asked me.
“To tell my brother. He should be the first to know, before anyone else.” I told him.
“Okay, I’ll be in the office if you need anything.” He smiled as I walked out of the bedroom.
I walked down the hall to get a better view of the rooms; I used my ability to pick up individual heat signatures. I walked to the door in middle of the hall to my left, where there was a picture of the ocean next to the door. Paul picked that room because of the amazing view of the ocean in the distance. I knocked on the door to be polite, for once, not go in unannounced like usual. At first, no one answered although I knew they were in there from the heat signatures that were coming off the two figures that were standing in the middle of the room.
“I know you’re both in there.” I called out as I knocked again.
“Okay, I’m coming.” Paul called back to me as he walked to the door.
He opened the door he was wearing just boxers and his hair was a bit messed from doing god knew what. I couldn’t help but let out a small giggle. I walked in, nodding at Abby and closed the door behind me.
“I have some news that I want to share with you guys before I tell everyone else.” I said to them.
“Don’t tell me that your pregnant?” Abby said, in surprise, before she could stop herself.
“Actually, yes I am. I wanted to let you both know because Paul, you’re my brother and Abby you’re like my sister.” I said to them as I started to pace the room.
“Thank you for telling us before everyone else. Abby, I need to speak with my sister.” Paul glanced from me to Abby and back again. “We’re going to go for a short walk, but I’ll be back soon,” he said to Abby
“That’s fine, I’ll be right here if any of you need me.” She said with a smile on her face.
I walked over to Abby and gave her a hug before leaving the room with Paul. We walked down the hall and down the stairs into the living room. Emmett and Bleu sat on the sofa watching a movie. They had a big bowl of popcorn and two bottles of soda on the coffee table and a thick black blanket over them as they watched the first Death Race. They smiled at Paul and I as we made our way out to the back yard.
“Where are we going exactly?” I asked, as I looked up at him.
He was a foot taller than me and I always hated that, but in this moment, I felt comforted by his height. We made our way to the edge of the woods; I wasn’t sure what he was thinking. I couldn’t tell if he was happy about my news or upset by it.
“I’m taking you to your favorite spot on the property. Where you always go to get away from everything.” He said as we headed toward the edge of the forest.
“How do you know about my spot?” I asked as I stepped over a fallen branch.
“I followed you once. It was right after mom and dad died. I know you haven’t been there in a really long time.” He said as we walked deeper into the woods; the woods got thicker as we turned left just before the meadow. We walked for miles and miles… or what felt like it anyways, until we came upon my favorite spot. It was a hill that overlooked the ocean, where everything bordering the water to my left, right, and beyond grew in vibrant shades of green. There were trees, grass, bushes and flowers of all kinds. The hill opened to a small rocky area where I used to love to sit and watch the sun rise and set and I’d also watch the waters change with the phases of the moon. After my mom and dad
died, sitting there made me feel closer to them.
During the full and new moon, the waters’ tides were high. When the moon waxed and waned, the tides were very low. The waters would change color as well. During a new moon the water was gloomy, murky and opaque, while during a full moon the water was dazzling, cobalt, and glittering and during a quarter moon it was bottomless, dreary and dark.
“Does it look the same as you remember?” Paul asked, pulling me away from my thoughts.
“Nothing has changed since the last time I was here.” I told him as I looked around again.
“I’m glad. So, what is it that you wanted to tell me?” He asked as he sat down and crossed his legs.
“Well…” I paused, “what I wanted to tell you is that I’m pregnant.” I said as I sat down beside him and put my head on his shoulder.
“So, I’m going to be an uncle?” He asked happily, as he wrapped his arms around me and held me for a few seconds.
I let out a giggle and nodded my head yes. I couldn’t help but wonder what everyone else would think.
Chapter Two
Claudia
Paul and I sat on the hill for what felt like the whole day. I needed that alone time with my brother now more than anything. Our relationship wasn’t like most brother and sister relationships. We are closer than any other siblings I had ever known.
“You know, I remember when mom told me that I was going to be a big brother. I was so mad. After you were born you made me want to be there for you more and more. I knew that my job in the pack was to be there for my baby sister and it still is. I will be here for you whenever you need me, always.” Paul gave me a kiss on my head and smiled.
“Thank you. I just hope everyone else will agree as well.” I told him.
“They will be just as overjoyed as I am.” He gave me one of his big bear hugs.
He unwrapped himself from me and stood up. He reached out his hands to help me up and I gladly took them. Once I stood up and brushed myself off, we made our way back toward the house. I was already getting sleepy, but I was sure it was just the pregnancy.
We made our way back in the direction of the house, and after walking in silence, again for what felt like hours, we finally reached the wood line at the rear of the property.
“Get some rest and when you wake up, gather everyone out here and tell them then. If you need any help, let me know. Love you, my lillie pad.” He told me as we made our way to the back door.
I gave him a nod and a smile; I loved that he was so supportive of me. We made our way inside and found the house empty, everyone was already asleep. We climbed the stairs and headed to our respective rooms.
As we approached Paul’s room, he leaned in and gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek before he slid into his room. I headed to Carson’s and my room which was all the way down at the end of the hall. As I made my way down the hall, I heard snoring from a lot of the rooms. When I got to our room, I could see that the light was still on.
I walked into the room, where I saw Carson looking through my drawing book. He didn’t see me come in, but I knew that he could smell me. When you were a wolf shifter, you could differentiate between your mate, your pack, or other packs that might be in the area. Everyone smells different, that’s why when a wolf scents their mate, they go crazy. A mate’s scent wass ten times stronger than anyone else’s.
I made my way deeper into the room and took off the clothes that I wore on my walk with Paul. I grabbed a long-oversized shirt and a pair of bed shorts and made my way to the bed. I climbed in and put my hands over Carson’s eyes and let out a playful giggle.
“Hello Pisoi, how did he take the news?” Carson set down the book and grabbed my hands and kissed them.
“He took it very well. He’s excited to be an uncle and he said that he’d be here for me.” I said.
“That’s awesome, I knew he would be.” He turned around and our lips were almost touching.
I kissed him and I needed to feel his touch so damn bad. I knew that we would be able to get through anything, but I was scared as hell knowing that our child would be another life Waylon could target.
We broke away from the kiss and I said, “I’m going to go to bed. I’m so tired for some reason.”
“Okay, I’ll be here when you wake up.” He said with a smile.
I nodded and rolled over to get some much needed sleep.
I got pulled into a very familiar place... it looked like my grandparents house. In fact, it was my grandparents’ house, but no windows were broken, the house wasn’t falling apart like it was now. I was a bit confused about why I was there, then I saw my younger self, about five years old, running out of the house and into the yard. I saw Paul running out of the house, he was about eight years old. Then, I saw my parents by the grill, with my grandparents, cooking dinner. I turned to see Paul and I were playing with two little boys. I walked closer to see that the two little boys were Carson and Harper. Now I was more confused than ever. Why are Carson and Harper in a memory? Did I know them when I was younger? Why don’t I remember them being there? I walked closer to see that Carson and I were holding hands. I couldn’t take this anymore. I had to wake up!
I woke up in a cold sweat and looked over to see Carson was still awake and looking through my drawing notebook again.
“Is something wrong, Pisoi?” he asked, before I could say anything.
“I had a really weird dream and you were in it along with Paul and Harper. I’m so confused by it.” I said as I shook my head.
“Do tell me, love.” He said as he placed the notebook on the bedside table and wrapped his arms around me.
“Well, to sum up everything, I was about five years old and we were at my grandparents’ house. I ran into you and Harper and started playing with you guys, and you and I held hands and that’s when I woke up.” I said taking a deep breath afterwards.
“Mhm… That’s interesting, you’ve never dreamt that before?” He asked me.
“No, well…yes, but the kids were always blurry and I couldn’t see them clearly.” I told him.
“That’s weird. We’ll figure it all out when you wake up. Go back to sleep and we will sort everything out later.” He told me as he kissed my forehead.
I gave him a nod, snuggled up to him and fell into a dreamless sleep. It was the best sleep that I had had in a long time. When I woke up again, Carson was still asleep. I decided to take a hot shower and hoped that it would help clear my head. I got out of bed and made my way to the bathroom, trying not to wake Carson up in the process. As I got to the bathroom, I turned the water to the shower on and let it warm up. I took off my pj’s and let them fall to floor. I ran a brush through my hair to get out any knots that formed while I slept. I didn’t bother locking the door, I knew Carson would wake up soon and the bathroom was the first place he would look.
As the room got steamy and started fogging up the mirrors, I slid the door to the shower open and stepped in. I loved my shower, it was big enough to fit about six people comfortably. It had three shower heads, one on the top, one to the left and one to the right. The streams all met in the center, so no matter where you stood you got wet. The sides were stone and when the water streamed down the walls it looked like a waterfall. There was a seat in the left corner, where I could put my legs up when I shaved or just simply wanted to be lazy and take a shower sitting down. Believe me, I did get lazy and took showers sitting down, not all the time, but sometimes. There was a silver wall suction shower caddy on the right wall. It held both Carson’s and my body wash. Mine was all natural, while Carson used Irish Spring. There were also our shampoos, mine, an all natural kind, of course, and Carson’s, a suave that smelled really good. It also held my razor and shaving cream.
I let the water run down over me, completely wetting my body and allowing the hot water to loosen my neck, shoulders, and back. I loved to stand under the water to help my body relax and let the steam open up my senses. I tried to shake the dream that I’d had
and all the questions that came with it. I made a mental note to save those questions for later. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, tilted my head up, letting the water run down my face.
As soon as I closed my eyes, I got pulled into a flashback to when I was about ten years old.
I was in the woods walking around exploring the grounds. I came to the clearing where I saw Waylon trying to force himself on June. I shifted and attacked him with everything that I had. He ran off before I could grab him and bring him to my mom and dad. When I got to June, she was a mess. Her shirt was shredded into strips, her shorts were pretty much the same and she looked terrified.
“Are you okay? Did you hurt you??” I asked her.
She shook her head no and started to cry. I grabbed her hand and walked her back to the house. When we got back to the house my mother and father were outside, they both wore looks of horror their faces.
“What happened to her?” My mother asked me.
“Mr. Waylon was trying to force himself on her. WHY WOULD HE DO THAT?” I yelled and I started to cry as well.
“Amelia, why would Waylon do something like this? She’s just a kid. Claudia, what did you do to him?” My dad asked as he looked from my mom to me.
“I attacked him and he ran off.” I said.
“I don’t know, Frankie. He’s your friend, not mine. We need to fix this right now.” My mom said as she glanced from me to my dad and back again,
June and I walked inside and got pulled into a room where we were met by Mrs. Tulip. Seeing her was becoming a bit of a routine. I met her first when we went to someone’s house, since then I’d only seen her about ten times.
I got pulled back to the present when the shower door was being slid open. I opened my eyes and saw Carson stepping in and moving next to me. I gave him a smile and made room for him under the water.
“Hey, let me help you. Are you okay?” He asked
“Yes, just thinking back on some things. Did you sleep well?” I sasked.
