A coffee stand catches my attention, and I dash straight toward it. Standing in line and having to wait for caffeine is a nuisance but it is also my top priority.
My eyes feel as if they will lull shut. The emotional weight of all the stress is causing me to crash.
I people watch as I wait my turn. My gaze lands on a tall man who reminds me of Griffin. I haven’t thought about him in so long—I don’t know why today, of all days, my mind is playing tricks on me. Maybe it’s because I am heading home for the first time in years.
While waiting for my coffee to be made, I watch the tall man talking on the phone. He’s dressed to the nines in a three-piece suit. Griffin was always the laidback type, but he was also a student back then.
Geez, I really have to stop thinking about him. He’s part of my past I’ve worked hard to forget. Going home now is about Mom, not me facing old demons.
The man turns around and his eyes search around and lock on mine. Air is sucked from my lungs as the most piercing blue eyes I’ve ever seen take me in. He’s just as shocked as me. His head tilts to the side and he blinks too many times. My heart begins to hammer in my chest.
This. Can. Not. Be. Happening . . .
I’m not ready. I pull my gaze and completely ignore him like I would a stranger. After not seeing him for ten years, that is what he is to me—a stranger.
