“After all this time, your strength has not changed. You have not bettered… All you did was use your power for fear, ruling through death and punishment, and did nothing that improved your prowess in battle. Once again, you could not beat me. You do not deserve the mark of the Adepti.”
“I did beat you the first time!” I coughed out, tears spilling down my temples as the repercussions of losing shattered me from the inside.
Helis leaned forward, a quiet rumble in his chest.
“I… let you… win.”

Acknowledgments
Huge thanks to the artist who made The Ascension Trial’s cover! I’ve always wanted covers of mine to wow me like the covers of other books do, and I finally got that this time around. Having my own cover fill me with that sense of awe is a dream finally realized, and I couldn’t be happier with how beautifully it turned out.
As always, I would also like to thank my fiancé for being a constant source of support and enthusiasm for my books, and for putting up with my Helis obsession. Thank you to my mom for being supportive and always motivating. Thank you to my beta readers who have helped improved this book through feedback. Those who enjoy my work, whether it’s just this book or others as well, are always appreciated.
Lastly, many thanks to my computer, which was a good mechanical beast this time and did not break down even once!
