“It has always been you.” He paused, peering deeply into her eyes. “I love you, Z.”
Tears rose in her eyes. “I love you too.”
“Marry me?”
She laughed through her tears. “Yes,” she exclaimed. “Oh, yes!” She flung her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his.
Cash cleared his throat. “Uh, the ring?”
A boyish grin streaked over Briggs’ lips. “Oops.” He pushed his hand into his jean pocket and pulled out a glittering diamond ring.
“It’s beautiful,” Zoe breathed as he slipped it over her finger. Everyone broke out in applause.
“Looks like you got a ringside seat,” Jaxson said to Cash.
“Yep, I think I’ll give y’all your space,” Cash said as he got up and moved away. Briggs and Zoe were too caught up in one another to even notice.
“This is the most beautiful birthday party ever,” Birdie exclaimed, tears sparkling in her eyes.
Cash had to agree. He was so glad to be home. It was good to see Zoe happy. He was glad he could play a small part in setting things right between Zoe and her man.
Mason stepped up to Cash and slung an arm around his shoulders. “How’s my favorite bro doing?”
Cash arched an eyebrow. “Whaddaya want?”
“Oh, nothing,” Mason said nonchalantly. “Just a spot on your tour.”
Cash caught Daddy’s eye, could tell from the tight set of his jaw that he was listening. Cash would like nothing more than to give Mason a shot, but he wanted to honor Daddy’s wishes—allow Mason time to get his education and grow up a bit first. “I tell ya what, you keep sharpening up on your skills, and I might just consider that sometime,” Cash said evasively.
Mason grunted. “You’re just afraid of the competition.”
“Yep, that’s what it is,” Cash said pleasantly.
“Come on, Cash,” Mason urged, “just give me a chance. What have you got to lose?”
Cash’s phone buzzed, giving him a welcome interruption. He pulled it out of his pocket and gave Mason an apologetic look. “It’s my manager. I need to get this.”
Mason scowled. “Fine, but this conversation’s not over.”
Cash walked a few steps away as he answered the phone. “Hey.”
“Hey,” Howie began. His voice sounded strange. There was a long pause. “I don’t know how to say this …”
“Just spit it out.” Cash held his breath, waiting.
“It’s about Queenland Grace.” Emotion strangled Howie’s voice. “Grace was leaving a friend’s house, walking across the street. She was hit by a car.”
The air left Cash’s lungs. He scrambled to speak. “Is she okay?” he croaked.
“No, she didn’t make it. She’s gone.”
