I just nod again and then start to walk away, but I pause before getting too far. “You can thank me by never stepping foot in Patience again.” He doesn’t look so put-off by that idea. I’m sure he hasn’t had the warmest welcome today. “We’ve faced the worst of what’s happened here—now this town deserves a chance to heal.”
I leave him to think over those words as I find the guys front row. “You all couldn’t have sat in the back row? Seriously?” I grumble as I take a seat between Jax and Jake.
“Did you totally dash his hopes of a sequel?” Jax leans over to ask as soon as I’m settled in my seat. The guys have been predicting Peterson would propose one ever since the book hit number one on the bestseller list.
“Yup,” I answer, popping my p.
He chuckles. “It’s hot when you’re wielding your power.” He slides a hand up my thigh but I drop mine on top of his to stop him before he gets too far. I roll my eyes at his comment, too, though I’ve more or less gotten used to it at this point. He likes when people defer to me around town, which still happens even now that Peterson’s book is out and the secret society bullshit is well and truly done. Some things never really change.
I might have come to Patience a Nikon Park girl, but now I guess no matter where I go or what I do, I’ll never again be anything but a Lexington ever again.
I’ve spoken too soon, of course, I remember as soon as Peterson takes to the front of the room to introduce his book. “Thank you for coming to this reading of my book: Of Pawns and Patience. I’d like to start by actually reading to you this special dedication…”
From the second I first read it, I wasn’t at all amused by the dedication to Jessica Brown in the front of the book—but what the hell’s in a name, anyway?
