  ONE:

Marlo sighed as he, and Braace ambled along the corridor on their way to the restaurant. It was early morn and the two males had spent the better part of the last hour roaming the streets of the city.

‘It’s not that I am unsympathetic to the plight of the females you understand.’

Braace nodded. I do, it is because our sleep was disturbed.

‘Exactly, and can you explain, why that was my fault.’

I am unsure what you are referring to.

‘Our Brenda, said it was my fault.’

Well my Marlo, our Brenda has a point.

  ‘What point would that be?’

Braace could hear the defensive tone in his bondmate’s voice and said. Perhaps I am wrong.

‘No… no, my friend, explain it to me.’

Was it not you who persuaded Beloved to allow the females to rest after their visit to the Healers?

‘Because our Brenda said they were exhausted and needed immediate medical treatment, then rest. I assumed like any reasonable male would, that meant they needed to relax and feel safe in their own beds without worrying.’

So what you are saying is our disturbed night was because you misunderstood our Brenda’s intention.

‘Yes, it is Brenda’s fault, I persuaded Peyton to leave speaking to the females until this morn.’

It seems our Brenda does not agree with you.

‘No, and again, it is her fault she was awake most of the night, worrying over those females. Which, of course, meant we were awake most of the night.’

Sighing, Braace said. Hence the disturbed sleep.

Marlo rubbed his flat stomach. He needed his first-meal and decided he may have been a little hasty last eve. ‘I feel perhaps I should have insisted Peyton talk to the females.’

You were not to know how their presence would affect our Brenda.

‘Waspish is what I call her temper last eve.’

  What does that mean?

  ‘Irritable, testy.’

That is the word for her mood.

Marlo stopped walking and looked down at his bondmate and asked doubtfully. ‘Is it possible she is correct, and I was wrong?’

  In what sense?

‘Never mind, I am hungry and my thoughts are rambling.’

Larson strode up behind the two males and grunted. ‘Greetings.’

Marlo looked over at his brother, he too did not sound cheerful this morn. He and Braace replied. ‘Greetings.’

  Marlo asked. ‘Bad night.’

Larson stared at him without expression and snarled. ‘My
Helen was most upset about the treatment of the females. So yes.’

‘Our Brenda was the same.’ Marlo looked down with raised eyebrows at Braace. Their brother was not usually so chatty. But he seemed to have a burr under his saddle this morn which made him verbose.

Larson rolled on like Marlo had not spoken. ‘I am not saying I do not understand their troubles. I am just saying, why was it my fault that Peyton did not address them like she was going to. And why was it necessary for me to remain awake and…’

Marlo cut in. ‘And discuss what happened to them for hours.’

Larson looked at his brother and stabbed his finger at him. ‘Yes, and I blame you.’

Shocked, Marlo stopped walking and exclaimed. ‘Me, why is it my fault?!’

Harm exiting the lift and catching Marlo’s question snarled. ‘You were the one to convince Peyton to wait until this morn to talk to the females. That is why!’

Marlo, forgetting he had just been lamenting that point to Braace, stated. ‘I do not see how that would make any difference to what occurred.’

‘Well, you are wrong,’ snarled Larson, ‘it did.’

‘And we all suffered.’ Harm growled, he too had been awake most of the night with Heather, who had been worried about the females.

Confronted with his two friends’ annoyance and knowing they could be right, he spread his hands and asked. ‘What can I do to make this right?’

So engrossed in their conversation, none of them heard Hawk arrive until he growled.

  ‘Two things.’

Oh tuap! Braace said to Marlo, who agreed heartily with his statement.

He turned to face the pissed off Commander and asked. ‘You too?’

  ‘Yes.’

Marlo sighed resignedly. ‘Name the two things, my friend.’

Hawk eyed the male and almost grinned at his meek reply as Larson and Harm both snorted. ‘You will not allow her to ramble in her speech this morn.’

Marlo gaped at the male and asked. ‘How am I to do that?’

‘Not our problem.’ Hawk insisted, he like the others had been up most of the night with a very upset Karen. ‘And because of your obvious thoughtless desire to do whatever you thought you were doing. By talking her out of giving the speech last eve. You will pay for the male’s night out, all of it.’

Marlo huffed out a breath and said gruffly. ‘I think…’

Hawk stated forcefully. ‘No… no thinking. That is what got us into this situation.’

Marlo looked to his brother and friend for support and found a now cheerful Larson and Harm staring back at him. Larson slapped him on the back and said. ‘Yes, that should make us feel better.’

Harm did likewise, and with Larson and Hawk, who until then, Marlo had considered close friends. Placed their hands in their pockets and the three of them sauntered along the hallway. He was sure he heard whistling.
