Maybe This Christmas Page 10

“Alexandra,” Lucas said around the giant frog in the back of his throat. His heart was pounding so loudly he wasn’t sure he’d be able to hear her answer. “I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you—”

“Yes!” she shouted. “Yes! Oh my god, yes! I will.”

  “—marry me,” Lucas finished, grinning.

Alex took an unsteady step toward him and he surged upright, meeting her halfway as their mouths smashed together in a messy, gasping, marvelous kiss.

His wife. She was going to be his wife.

“What took you so long?” she demanded, breaking off the kiss to punch him in the arm.

  “Ow!” Lucas said. “Seriously?”

“I was starting to think you weren’t going to do it.”

“I was waiting for the right time,” he said as Alex pried his fingers open to examine the ring. “Do you like it?”

“It’s perfect. Can I try it on?”

Lucas took the ring out of the box and slid it on her outstretched finger. It fit her finger, thank god.

“It’s so perfect,” Alex said, admiring it. “I love it.” She took his face in her hands and kissed him tenderly. “I love you.”

“You think your parents are going to be surprised?” Lucas asked.

“We’ve been living together for almost a year—no one will be surprised.” She smiled and kissed him again. “I think they’ll be happy though.”

“Not as happy as I am.”

Alex’s lower lip puckered in displeasure. “This means I have another wedding to plan.”

Lucas reached for her left hand, bending his head to kiss the ring he’d given her. “We can elope if you want.”

  “Really?” She looked doubtful.

“If that’s what you want, then that’s what we’ll do. I don’t care where or how we get married as long as we get married.”

“My mom will completely blow a gasket if we elope. She’ll never forgive me for denying her the right to play mother of the bride.”

“She’s still got Mia,” Lucas pointed out. “And it’s not about her. She’ll just have to accept it.”

  Alex snorted. “Right. That’ll happen.”

“I’ll help you convince her. You know she loves me.”

“She does. She’s going to be beside herself with joy.”

“Speaking of your mom, we should probably get that pie in the oven if it’s going to be out of the oven in time.”

  “Yeah, probably,” Alex agreed.

Lucas started for the counter, but she hooked a finger under his belt and tugged him back into her arms.

“Screw the pie,” she murmured, rubbing her nose against Lucas’s neck. “I’m bringing her a son-in-law for Christmas. Nothing can top that.”

His hands slid down her back, locking at the base of her spine to keep her close. She fit against him perfectly, her body warm and familiar as he kissed her in the kitchen of their home, in the life they were building together.

Alex tugged on his belt again, and her mouth moved toward his ear, her teeth catching his earlobe. Lucas’s breath caught, and Alex tugged gently on his earlobe with her teeth. Then she licked it. Then she bit down.

“Come on,” she whispered, sending a shiver of sparks down his spine as she pushed him toward the bedroom. “We’ve got two hours before we have to be at my parents’ house, and I’ve got a few ideas about how we should pass the time.”

  Best. Christmas. Ever.
