“I could never hate you,” I say, rising to stand in front of her. “Lilith, yes, but never you.”
“I will fix this,” she vows. “All of it. I love you.”
My gut twists. My hands shake as I reach for her, but she steps back and shakes her head.
“If you kiss me now, I’ll never be able to walk out that door,” she says, wiping her tears away on her arm. “Wait for me. I’ll come home soon.”
She doesn’t give me time to respond. Blowing me a wet kiss, she spins on her heel and bolts out of the front door. The door closes behind her, and I can swear I hear something shatter in my chest at the same time. I’ve now lost her twice in twenty-four hours, but this time somehow hurts worse.
“Well, fuck.” Dagon sinks back into his chair.
“This isn’t over,” I growl. “There’s no way I’m letting Lilith torture her for the next six years.”
My brother grins. “Oh, I figured as much. But I didn’t want to say anything in front of Nadia and get her hopes up before we even have a plan. She’s been through a lot already. Why don’t we crack open this bottle and figure out our next move?”
Thank Lucifer for Dagon. Without him, I don’t know how I’d survive this with a calm head. I drop back onto the couch and slump back against the cushions, letting the tension in my body slowly ease. If anyone can help me get her back, it’s him.
“Infernal law is not on our side,” he points out, snatching the bottle from the table. “We must figure out a way to convince Lilith to release her from the deal, or appeal to a higher source of authority.”
I roll my eyes. The only higher authority in Hell is Lucifer, and he’s the last person I want knowing about Nadia. Option one it is.
“Lilith won’t let her go unless we offer her something she wants more,” I say. “Or, someone.”
“Such as?”
“Nadia isn’t the hunter she wanted. Maybe if we grab the right girl…”
Dagon shakes his head, passing me a glass. “It’s a dangerous gamble. Especially after Nadia asked us to wait to abduct anyone else. We don’t even know if it will work.”
“It will.” It must. I have nothing else to offer Lilith for Nadia’s freedom. “And if it doesn’t, at least Moloch will still promote you. I’d feel much better about all this if you were there keeping an eye on things.”
“It’s worth a try,” he says in a voice that tells me he’s not entirely convinced. “But I hope it’s worth breaking our word to Nadia. Not to mention the fuel it will add to Michael’s fire.”
As if anything means more to me than Nadia. She’ll understand if I can’t keep this promise. I doubt she meant the words when they left her lips. She needs me to save her, and that’s precisely what I plan to do.
“We need to break into the pastor’s home. See if we can dig up any of Alana’s art.”
Dagon laughs without humor. “So you want to break into her childhood home and kidnap her friend? How do you think she’ll feel about it?”
I grunt. It’s not the best start to a new relationship. Then again, after the whole kidnap thing, our relationship had already gotten off on an unconventional foot. I must hope she never finds out what lines I’m crossing to bring her home.
At least I’m not worried about my brother’s willingness to back me up. Even if he didn’t have a soft spot for Nadia, his hatred for Michael is enough motivation for him to follow me into battle. The moment I tell him about Hollie’s betrayal, all bets are off. I’ll have to hold him back from destroying every hunter he finds in a fifty-mile radius. Hopefully Nadia isn’t too attached to any of her former friends.
“Finish your drink.” I gesture towards the untouched glass in his hands. “Today, we get shit-face drunk and mourn our losses. Come tomorrow, we bring the fight to Michael.”
