Love Is in Sight Page 4

by Jill Ferraro

Brielle’s goosebumps came back. Matthew issued the same warning Shea had, to be careful. What was going on that she didn’t know about?

Rather than sound the alarm bells, she decided to casually bring it up with Laura. If something was going on, she didn’t need Abigail knowing she’d picked up on it.

  “Hey, Laura?”

“Yeah?” She looked up from the cable she was winding around her arm.

Brielle put on her most innocent-sounding voice. “Why did Matthew say ‘be careful’? Is there something I should be worried about?”

Laura paused and looked thoughtful. “Hmm...I don’t think so. Maybe he means, like, be careful don’t get your heart broken? That kind of thing?”

Brielle studied her face for any signs of guilt. She seemed to be telling the truth, although she was sure Abigail threatened her job after Brielle’s breakdown on the first day of filming. “Yeah, you’re probably right.”

Laura and James left quickly and Brielle bolted the door behind them. She double-checked the windows, paranoia washing over her. Once she was sure the apartment was secure, she poured herself a large glass of wine.

She thought about the possible things she should look out for but came up short. Maybe Shea and Matthew had a run-in with Abigail and Mark and were trying to warn her. Maybe they didn’t like one of the other guys that was left. There were so many possibilities but when she broke it down, she didn’t feel like there was a threat to her immediate safety. This relaxed Brielle a bit.

As she sipped her wine, she thought about Stacey’s schedule for her wedding day. She was both exhilarated and terrified. Brielle already had a pit in her stomach when she thought of telling one of the guys she was not marrying them. And in her wedding dress no less. It would break his heart.

Brielle was in love with Carl and Asher. But she could only marry one. The urgency of her choice was growing. In 72 hours, she would be leaving her wedding with the husband of her dreams. This mess she’d gotten herself into would finally be over. And she would be a wife.

But before that could happen, she needed to finish two more days of planning and chatting. She thought two days wasn’t enough time for her to decide. She wished she could marry them both. They both had qualities she admired, now she had to discern which man would make a better husband.

It was impossible to know. This entire experience was a huge risk and the seriousness of her decision was beginning to really sink in. She was getting married. In less than three days. To a man she’d never met in person.

Her stomach filled with butterflies at the thought. Brielle closed her eyes and imagined the ceremony with her mystery husband. Her parents were beaming in the front row, alongside her grandma who would certainly try to get camera time any chance she got. Brielle would meet her in-laws for the very first time, meet her husband’s friends, meet everyone who was important to him.

They would be married and have their first kiss and spend the best night of their lives surrounded by people they loved. And then they would leave, hand in hand, to start the rest of their lives together. Her heart swelled and she blinked away tears.

The image was so crystal clear in her mind. She could see every detail, except who her husband was going to be. That was still a mystery to Brielle. She had hoped it would be easier to figure out which man was supposed to be hers forever.

She looked over at the profile wall. There were four files remaining: Shea, Asher, Carl, and Brandon. Brielle stood up, removed Shea and Brandon’s profiles from the wall, and tossed them in her growing discard pile. As the files hit the top of the pile, she wished them well and hoped they’d find a wife who would make them happy.

Brielle examined the wall. Only Asher and Carl remained. She loved both of them but she could only spend the rest of her life with one of them. The only question that remained for Brielle was which man would it be?

  Chapter Ten

Abigail paced the apartment floor. She hadn’t spoken in over ten minutes and shushed Mark every time he tried to speak up. She occasionally muttered under her breath. Mark wasn’t sure how long she could pace for. It seemed futile, there was nothing left to do but see how everything played out over the next 72 hours.

She finally stopped and leaned on the back of the couch. “So Shea and Matthew went home.”

“Yes. That’s what you wanted, right?”

“I think so.” The pacing started again but she stopped after a moment. “And Brandon’s leaving tomorrow?”

Mark nodded. “She just took his profile off the wall. Though I think they want a date.”

“He wants to tell her what’s happening. I know he does.”

“So do we not let her have the date?”

Abigail shook her head. “No, that won’t work either. She’ll throw a fit. She might screw us on the wedding day and not pick anyone, just to prove a point.”

  “So what do we do?”

The phone rang before she could answer. “Get it!” she screeched.

Mark quickly picked up the phone. “Hello? Yeah we know. Yes it is good news. Thanks.”

“What’s good news? How could we get good news right now?”

“Brielle told Seth she loved him. He thinks he’s got it in the bag.”

“I know better than to believe that idiot. And she said it hours ago, why is he just calling now?”

Mark shrugged. “I think he wanted to wait until Asher and Brandon went to bed?”

  “Whatever.”

“Can I go to bed?” Mark yawned.

“Not until we figure this out. We can’t tell her she can’t go on a date with Brandon. But he can’t tell her what’s really happening.”

  “A decoy date?”

Abigail smiled and then quickly frowned again. “No, we couldn’t train someone to be Brandon in such short notice.”

“We’ll come up with a plan. An intervention plan.”

“Perfect. I’m going to bed. Have it ready for the morning.”

  Mark rubbed his temples. “Seriously?”

Abigail slammed the door in response. Mark sat at the table for a long time, wondering what he did to get himself entangled with such a terrible person. She was ruthless, yet she kept drawing him back to her when he was at his weakest. She was his siren, ever calling.

He sketched something on a notebook and looked at the clock. It was 1 AM. He’d need to be up in four hours to do this all again for another day. Mark wandered down the hall and shut the door to the bedroom.

What were they going to do?
