  MATE PRIZE Excerpt 1

I've been a troublemaker all my life. I started smoking pot at fourteen. At seventeen, I'd considered vandalism a minor hobby.

Mom buying me that second-hand guitar later that same year probably saved my life. I finally found something that I thought was worth learning. Was finally able to do something that made people proud of me.

Eventually, I started my band, Last Chance, and from the first gig I knew what I was going to do with my life. With that guitar in my hand, I could write my own ticket. I could go wherever I wanted. Do whatever I wanted when I got there.

  My guitar made me free.

And free is the only way this lady knows how to be.

  MATE PRIZE Excerpt 2

I'd thought my head couldn't spin any faster.

  I was wrong.

I struggled to process all of the impossible things happening to me. Not only was I speaking with a small, floating metal ball, not only was I floating in midair, but I was being... collected? As in, abducted? I was about to leave the freaking solar system?

"No," I said. Just that. I still wasn't thinking straight. But I knew enough to understand that I definitely did not want to be abducted by aliens.

"I'm afraid the decision has been made," said the orb, "and that decision is irreversible. This will no doubt be a challenging experience for you. But I am confident that you will adjust, in time. One of our selection criteria is the ability to adapt to a wide range of experiences - a trait which our data indicates you possess in abundance. Please be patient. And do behave yourself. Mate-prizes are not permitted to disobey orders in any way."

  Holy. Crap.

Did that thing just say... mate? As in, I'm going to be someone's mate?

  Like... for mating?

  MATE PRIZE Excerpt 3

  My name is Travan.

I have fought in countless battles, and have led my men to victory with distinction. It is through my many successes in battle that I finally earned the right to bear sons of my own.

I, and my men, had finally earned the right to claim our mate-prize.

Like the rest of my four-man squad, I have known no other life but war.

It is a life that I relish.

My squad and I belong to a clan named Triumphant. We are one of the most powerful clans, and the most feared.

We do not retreat. We conquer.

We do not show mercy. We demand obedience.

  Ours is a proud clan.

And I am proud to serve it, as are my men.

  MATE PRIZE Excerpt 4

  These weren't men.

  These were killing machines.

As I'd watched the scenes of slaughter, I'd noticed that there'd always been a name at the bottom right corner of the screen: Travan, Jensi, Daxen and Ellon.

And there they were. Standing up on the platform at the front of the room. Each one of them looking down at me. Each one of them with a deep hunger in their eyes, and a barely-concealed smile upon their face.

Some of the details I'd just learned began to sink in. Like the fact that most alien men were never allowed to mate, or even have sex. That it was a privilege they won in battle. Those four men up on the platform, their perfectly white uniforms stretched tight over more muscle than I'd ever seen... they'd basically been waiting their whole lives for this.

  For me.

And I was going to be their first sexual experience.

  A funny thing happened, then.

  I felt... something.

Something deep in the pit of my stomach. A... heaviness. An intensity I couldn't describe.

It made me gasp. Left me breathless.

Then, just as quickly, it was gone.

The men on the platform were still staring at me. All four of them.

  Their eyes hungrier than ever.
