Pack Ties Page 3

“You’re soft. I like it,” she declared, punctuated with a sniff. Jackson laughed, and the tension bled away.

“How about we all go home? I think this calls for a midnight snack, don’t you, Si?” Violet nodded at Jackson and held out her hand. They took it and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

As we all walked back to the house, I had to smile as best I could with my lupine mouth. I was walking a few steps behind my family, watching as Violet tilted her tear-stained face up to look at Jackson.

“Jackson? Do we have any books on woofs?”

“I think we have a few. Why?” They matched their long strides to her relatively small ones.

“Well,” she said thoughtfully. “If Daddy is going to be a woof sometimes, I wanna know everything!”

“Okay. Well, when Daddy’s back, how about all three of us go to the library and find all the books we can on wolves?”

“Yeah! Let’s do that!” She nearly yelled. Jackson chuckled, their deep baritone laugh ringing through the trees. My heart swelled with joy. They were my family, my pack. I couldn’t have wished for better people to have by my side.
