Copies exist in Nat. Lib. Athens K6, Hist. Mus., and GAK. Letters 1 and 3 are published in translation by Nicolson (Journey, 173–7), the latter without date. Letter 3 is published in the original French in IAM (III 545–6 no. 655), where the misreading of the date as ‘October’ seems to go back to a contemporary copy.
57. BLJ XI 82: B to Bowring, 26 December 1823 (‘Little need be added to the enclosed Which have arrived this day’).
58. This is the most likely reconstruction of the events underlying Gamba 66–7, assuming also that B's letters of 23 and 26 December are immediate responses to the arrival of the two vessels from Missolonghi. NLS MS 43550 (subfile 1, no. 28) includes a note from the captain of the Leonidas to B, dated 12 [/24] December, in Greek, placing himself under B's command on the instructions of his admiral. The return of the Leonidas without Byron, and Praidis’ delayed arrival in Cephalonia, are explained by IAM III
673–5 nos. 949, 951 and III 680 no. 956: Mavrokordatos to Praidis, 10 [/22], 12 [/24], 13 [/25] December 1823. By 28 December, Praidis was back in Missolonghi (IAM III 757).
59. BLJ XI 34–5: ‘Journal in Cephalonia’, 17 December 1823.
60. IAM III 552 no. 848: Legislative Body to B, 15 [/27] October 1823, from Salamis (translation in Nicolson, Journey, 172). The translation leaves the impression that B is being invited to go himself to Missolonghi, but the Greek text does not say so. The evidence that B received this letter now, and not earlier as Nicolson thought, was published by Nicolson himself, as Mavrokordatos refers to this letter specifically in the first of his own three letters brought to Byron by Praidis (Journey, 173–5: Mavrokordatos to B, 1/13 December 1823), as was pointed out by Minta (‘Mavrokordatos’, 136–7).
