Although Judge Freeborn’s part in the scheme was focused on the money side, he held himself ready with law precedents, ways and means to put the doctor under arrest and make it stick.

Jack quietly moved amongst his crew, deciding whether they might need the armed squad. They also would need a team of three or four who could be discreet before, during and after the operation.

The auction was traumatic. Cam’s face was drawn into lines of tension, and he had to fight to stop himself shaking. He dreaded seeing the children, but he need not have worried. The ‘seller’ had ensured their silence and doped them up.

  He won!

Suddenly, the room was filled with people shouting. This was a big haul for the major crimes squad. They were quick and efficient, hiding their jubilation at the successful operation. So many well-respected people had been bidders. It was hard to believe.

“You had better bring Sarah over now, Cam. The children may wake fairly soon. Hopefully.”

“That’s one crime solved. But we’ve still got the sniper to catch!”

Which wasn’t too difficult. In spite of the terrain around the Northern Rivers area, which enticed ‘off the grid’ behaviour, there was enough informal information to quickly pick up Brian Carter. His testimony was crucial to Dr Friedens prosecution – he admitted that he had been paid to take Samuel out.

“Dr Friedens – do you have anything to say?” Friedens snarled wordlessly, looking like the monster he was.

“Sergeant, good work!” Jack smiled tiredly and ran his fingers through the speckled mop his hair had become as he glanced at the cup of coffee on his desk. “Not the easiest thing to have to face, was it?”

“Incredible! I never pictured any of these pedophiles being as crazy as that. How could you sell a four-year-old to the highest bidder? It’s insane!” Detective Superintendent Creed nodded.

“But what’s even more insane is that it took a good-hearted judge and an astute legal mind to open the file on this crazy psychiatrist. Otherwise, we would have been incapable of arresting the man. Without catching him red-handed, plus the evidence of the sniper, the monster would have been free to carry on.”

“I’m just glad I don’t have children, knowing there are real monsters like that lurking…” The Sergeant spoke with feeling.

Jack thought of Melissa. She was so vulnerable. She thought and behaved like a child. A precious, lovable child. He shied away from the horrors her life might bring. His breath caught and he consciously straightened his spine.

Sufficient unto the day, he thought. At the moment, his family was safe. He appreciated them all the more.

He couldn’t wait to get back to Brisbane to see Sandra and Melissa. To relax into the comfortable surroundings of home and share treasured time with them.

He must keep his priorities right, he thought. It was time to return to them and put his hard-earned experience into practice.
