Hans looked over at me and smiled. That smile had never ceased to send a warm shiver down my spine. The eyes that now looked warmly into my own had never ceased to hypnotize me.
I smiled back and reflected for a moment over our life together. Just the day before, Hannah’s school class had gone on a field trip to the Royal Opera House to see my ballet company preform. Hans had left me a love letter, as he did before every performance he missed. Each time the notes filled me with a burning fire of love. Yesterday, the note had read:
My Dearest Bella,
Even after all these years together, I still think back to the dance where we first met. That was the best night of my life. I am the luckiest man on earth to have found you, my Bella. I imagine other paths my life could have taken, but all of them are dark without you. I remember our garden bench where we sat with the ocean breeze in your hair and the soft flower perfume was floating around us. I swear, Bella, that night I saw diamonds in your eyes.
I’ve thought about this a lot, both literally and symbolically. It seems like a minor detail in the many strands of life, and yet it is a minor detail I have paid a lot of thought to. “Diamonds are forever.” Jewellery companies often boast. I know this is true, and yet to me it seems as if they are getting the wrong message across. We both saw on the cruise how one of the very diamonds they brag about tore your parents apart. It brought the end of love, and forever has no end. But I think of our love, Bella, and our love is unbreakable. Our love is stronger than the hardest stones and more beautiful than the greatest jewels. Our love is worth more than infinite wealth and more precious than the rarest gemstones. Our love is superior to diamonds, the greatest treasure known to man.
But I do know those diamonds were a sign. “Diamonds are forever.” We are forever, Bella. Our love is forever. I could never love another the way I love you, I could never hope to find a better match. I could never choose to lose you and I can’t imagine a single other person I would rather have by my side. My love for you is infinite and forever.
Hans
