  “I was always their killer.”

“Perhaps.” Christopher closed his eyes. “But maybe you can be more. I’ve been in contact with Ashley. Close contact.”

I stared at him, then looked at Talbot. “Can we talk? Freely, I mean.”

“For another few minutes,” Talbot replied. “I’ve got every possible amulet and ward for keeping this conversation quiet active.”

  I nodded. “…how is she?”

“That’s the thing,” Christopher said, staring. “I contacted her as soon as my free will was restored. I felt I owed it to you to try and get you back in touch with her. I thought maybe I owed you something for all you’ve done for me. You deserve a chance at a normal life away from this hellhole. I thought maybe we could fake your death and find you a nice hidey-hole off the grid.”

I admitted, that sounded attractive. “And?”

“The Committee found her. They know about everything you did for her and are holding her prisoner.”

My mouth went dry. “Help me get her back.”

  “I will,” Christopher said.

It was time to end my association with the House.

  To be concluded in:
