  Cassie stared at him. “Please don’t go bring up that reincarnation stuff.”

  “Did I say anything? I’ve only waited years and years for this. But did I say anything?” He mockingly brought his hand up to his mouth, then lowered it. “I love you. Let me show you.”

  He pulled her towards him and gave her a deep kiss. “No more thinking about it,” he said when he pulled away. “I need to know.”

  “Wow,” she said, coming up for air.

  “Well?”

  “I need more time,” she told him.

  “You’re kidding.”

  “No.”

  “Hmm, that’s not what I expected.”

  “Expectations get you into trouble. I learned that much,” she said.

  He started the truck. He remained quiet as did she.

  “You know where to find me,” he said once they got back to the barn. “Sure you don’t want to change your mind?”

  Cassie looked hard at him. He had such an earnest face and much as she hated to admit it, she felt like she’d known him for a long time. Life seemed so fragile to her though.

  She shook her head. “Things need to settle down. I need more time.”

  He looked disappointed, but she knew that was she had to say.

  “Time?” he repeated softly. “Why Cassie, you and I have all the time in the world….”
