“You certainly did Pete, the place is a credit to you both,” said Bridget as she leaned across to squeeze Pete’s hand.

“So that’s it, my life history, anything else you’d like to know Bridget?” replied Pete with a cheeky grin.

“No, I think that’s all for now Mr McNally!”

“Come on Bridget Honeyman, let’s get you back home, before you upset any more of the locals,” said Gil as they all finished off their drinks. They had only gone a few yards when they were almost knocked off their feet.

“I really am so sorry,” said Doug, “didn’t see you there, I’m trying to get to the boulangerie before they close. Can’t stop but I just wanted to say thank you for the lovely meal last night, Bridget you’re an absolute marvel. Still trying to get my head round all of that stuff that Agnès said though, what a terrible story. Still I suppose we’ve got you to thank Bridget for getting to the bottom of it. If it was up to me, and I suspect to Gil too, we’d still be sitting round sipping our gin and tonics and leaving the Gendarmes to get on with it.”

“Have you seen Béatrice this morning Doug, I’ve been a bit worried that last night was all a bit too much for her?” Bridget asked with concern.

“Yes we have, or rather Helen has, she went round this morning after breakfast. No need to worry, she’s right as rain, she’s made of strong stuff you know, asked for your trifle recipe apparently! Sorry, love to talk but I’ve got to dash, if I go back without any bread, Helen’ll have my guts for garters!”

He sprinted off across the square in the direction of the boulangerie before he suddenly stopped and headed back.

“Nearly forgot, Max and Genevieve have set a date for the wedding next year, you’re both invited of course.”

“Oh, how lovely,” said Bridget smiling. “When is it?”

“Fourteenth of July, you know, Bastille Day.”

“As if we could ever forget! Come on Gil, let’s get back home and do what we came here for,” said Bridget.

  “What’s that?”

“Enjoy our holiday of course,” said his sister.
