“No, I’m sorry I failed you. Please, I beg you.”
The can fell from her frozen fingers, hitting the table and spilling out.
“Oh gosh Jaycen, quick get up,” Gemma stressed, throwing paper towels on the spill.
Thornton cursed and stood. “What happened? Are you okay?”
Jaycen sat completely still. The man’s pleading voice was still in her head, he sounded so close. She looked around. The busy room was full and everyone was talking. But no one was screaming for help.
“Hey Jaycen, are you okay?” Thornton cupped her chin and tilted her head up so she was looking at his small, confused smile.
Jaycen took a long, deep breath, and closed her eyes. Hiding her fear. When she opened them again she gave a big fake smile. “Yeah, sorry. It just slipped out of my fingers.” She stood and helped clean the spill, trying to hide her shaky hands. The voice died down until it was gone completely. It was just in her head, she silently chanted, throwing the soaked towels in the bin and joining the others at the table. None of it was real, she decided with a smile. Now, all she had to do was believe it.
The End.
